Work Text:
Sasha and Marcy met at the planetarium once a month. They used to go with Anne, but she got banned after taking the blame for breaking over an expensive model planet that Marcy had tripped into. Anne had been grounded for a month, much to Sasha and Marcy's dismay.
Marcy had nearly cried, apologizing over and over for getting her banned, and Anne had simply put her hand on the other girl's shaking shoulder and said, "Mar-Mar, I don't really like the planetarium. We'll hang out somewhere else."
The bluntness of the statement still made Sasha chuckle. She grinned at Anne's banned poster in the little ticket area, a photo of her dabbing at the camera. She bought her ticket, knowing Marcy was probably already inside ogling the exhibits as if she hadn't already been there a dozen times. Sasha would never admit it out loud, but she thought Marcy's endless curiosity and knowledge was cute.
She spotted the small girl near a huge model of the sun in the exhibit area, writing notes in a little journal, oblivious to Sasha's presence. Sasha snuck up on her, planning to surprise her. She looked over her shoulder at the journal. Marcy was scribbling a little doodle, a sun with Sasha's face, like that show telebubbies they all used to watch as little together. There was another doodle, a moon with Marcy's face facing the sun. A constellation of stars made up an Anne doodle. Sasha tried not to think about the way her sun and Marcy's moon looked... Together.
She wrapped an arm around Marcy's waist from behind and covered her eyes. "Guess who?"
Marcy yelped and dropped her journal, nearly falling over. Sasha stumbled a bit with her in her arms, but managed to hold both of them up. Sasha still had an arm around Marcy, and the other had settled on her shoulder. Marcy turned in her arms, and took the edges of her jean jacket in her hands, curling her fingers in the denim.
"Sashy you can't scare me like that, I'm gonna pull us both down one of these days." Marcy complained.
Sasha reached up to fix Marcy's glasses, and said, "don't worry so much, Mar-Mar. I'll always catch you when you fall." The softness of the words caught up to Sasha and she pulled away, releasing Marcy.
Marcy blushed slightly, letting go of Sasha's jacket. Her fingers lingered before she reached down to grab her journal. "Let's go in."
The two went into the large domed room, finding seats in an empty area. They leaned the seats back and stared up at the projected stars. Soft classical music played. The stars were clear and bright, something they didn't see living in LA.
Marcy looked to Sasha, taking in her features in the dim light. She found herself staring at Sasha often, memorizing her features. Her blue and brown eyes, which Sasha used to be embarrassed of. The beauty mark under her left eye. Sasha started to look at her, and she quickly glanced away.
"How are things at home?" Sasha asked.
"The same. Dad's at work all the time. How's it at your house?" Marcy replies.
Sasha grimaced. "The same too. They're always fighting. I wish I could just live on my own."
They had the same conversation every time they went to the planetarium. The dim lights and stars made it feel safe. Anne wouldn't understand the urge to run away. So they had this time every month, a day to be away from their home lives and in the comfort of the stars and each other's presence.
"We could run away." Marcy said. It was only mostly a joke.
"I could just steal my mom's cash from her safe. We could just go on an adventure. We could go somewhere snowy. Or somewhere with tons of weird animals for you to study." Sasha smiled wistful, but the smile faded. "Anne would never go for it though..."
Marcy frowned, and looked at Sasha. Their eyes met. "Whenever you feel like you want to run away, go out and look at the moon, and text me to look too. We can look together, and pretend we're anywhere else." Marcy hoped the blush on her cheeks wasn't visible.
"And what if it's daytime?" Sasha's voice was uncharacteristically soft.
"Then go out in the sun and feel its warmth, and pretend it's me hugging you." Marcy fidgeted with a loose thread in her seat, nervous butterflies fluttering around in her stomach.
Sasha hid the bittersweet ache in her heart with a smirk. "You're such a sweetie." She teased.
Marcy stammered over her words, before a beep from her watch spared her. She looked, and sighed. "That's my alarm, I have to go home and study."
Marcy started to get up, and Sasha was filled with a sudden boldness. She grabbed Marcy's hand, holding it tight. "Stay a little longer, please"
Marcy's blush was definetely visible now. She sat again. "I suppose I can stay for a few more minutes."
When Sasha fell asleep with her hand still on Marcy's and her head on her shoulder, Marcy knew she wouldn't be able to leave any time soon.
