Work Text:
“Oh BadboyHalo~!” XD is currently trailing after the scared demon, Eryn and Foolish laughing their asses off. So it's been a good day so far
“Stop- Stop, I’m sorry whatever I said, I'm' sorry”
“I don’t wanna see your face. Get out!”
“What?”
“Leave!”
“Okay, I’m sorry!”
“L e A V e”
“I’m sorry, stay OUT OF MY NIGHTMARES.” Bad dashes away, screaming, and the demigod feels now a bit bad (no pun intended). He stops holding his stomach from the wild laughing and properly takes a look at XD now back with the two, looming over Eryn.
“Hm. What are you laughing for?”
The voice sounds strained and Foolish feels worry when Eryn simply laughs at the god, not aware of the predicament he’s got himself in.
“O- oh. Oh no Eryn.” He says quietly, watching them interact. It gets even worse. The oblivious dark-haired mortal asks who he is and XD nearly growls at him.
“How. DARE. You.”
“Foolish you know this guy, right?” Eryn looks at him, now a bit tense, his eyes staring into him in question.
“Foolish! Are you associating with this person?”
The god asks next, tone vibrating between somewhat betrayed and impossibly angry. Foolish tries to explain himself but it’s too late. The god seethes at them and soon orders the demigod to eliminate Eryn. He doesn’t want to. He really doesn’t. But DreamXD is easy to displease. Easy to stir dangerous emotions in, such as jealousy.
“Foolish is my best friend!”
That’s what gets Eryn officially on XD’s bad side. He stares at him, he glares, he wants to rip him into fucking shreds for the audacity of taking away the god’s companion. He’s not going to forgive this kind of disrespectfulness especially after Foolish constantly, nervously disagrees with him. He is aware of his concern and discomfort, and fear. Because even if Foolish and XD are on good terms, it doesn't mean they’re all buddy-buddy with each other. That XD cares. (He does. He does care.)
Eryn is forced off the land, Foolish looking at him guilty when he leaves. He wants him back, he wants to spend some more time with him, but he knows how it would end. He turns around, hiding the frown on his face and replacing it with his usual cheery smile. Although more eerie, in this case. XD and him have a walk around, the god being frustrated with that caricature statue of his and whatever dog/wolf statue Foolish has for some reason.
They talk and the shark-totem is tired of this entire facade of them bickering, joking and pretending to be friends. At least in his opinion.
“You’re my friend.”
He hears the sentence, it’s firm but Foolish notices that XD is unable to maintain eye contact with him and realizes that he’s not lying. Because XD looks embarrassed. He looks flustered, although there’s no crimson cheeks nor stuttering. It’s the way he says it, the way that single revelation washes away the demigod’s uncertainty for now.
“I am?”
Foolish asks hesitantly, wanting to be reaffirmed. He needs to hear it again or else he’ll note it down as some kind of hallucination. He doesn’t seem affected either, but now XD is the one to notice how the other’s hands tremble ever so slightly, no other sign of Foolish’s nervousness. They stare at each other, one desperately grabbing onto the piece of the god’s true selves and the other wishing that he’d believe him for once, without a single word. With no doubt. But he wasn’t dealing with a full god like himself, XD muses. Foolish is a god only partially. (At least for now, his mind adds shamelessly.)
“You’re my friend, Foolish.”
He genuinely is. He is and DreamXD is surprised by his own words too. Showing attachment could be dangerous to the demigod. He could--
No. Foolish was under his care now. Which meant that he'd do anything to protect him from harm. Losing the other two canon lives.
He looked at the sky, wondering what Death would do in his place. He isn't sure. She has been silent for years.
“Aww, that's it, open up!”
Foolish opened his arms, grinning like Santa Claus has just gifted him creative mode.
XD only shakes his head, now looking away for another reason. Foolish looks at him surprised, but accepts the hug rejection.
“Alright, no hug. We can work on that.”
He says, still not losing the sparkle in his eyes. XD watches it flicker, swoop around, in the shark-totem's green eyes and mentally smiles. He smiles so hard his cheeks hurt and thanks Death for not taking away Foolish sooner. That they still have time.
He wasn't going to let her take Foolish away. Not if he could do something about it.
The Death book. He remembers it and tells the demigod about it. Of course, he says he'll start searching for it. If he had this book, Foolish would be in less danger. Dream was out of prison with the revival book. XD couldn't let him get his hands on the other one. Even if Dream hasn't targeted Foolish now, he couldn't say what would happen in the future. He didn't know.
Foolish kept up most of their conversation, mood lifted, genuinely now enjoying the moment.
XD makes a silent promise to himself.
He would not surrender Foolish to anyone.
He would make a place for him next to XD as a god and nothing was going to stop it. No one.
If Death can play favorites. If the Angel of Death can play favorites. Why shouldn't he?
