Today- like always- Minerva rises at dawn. She’s careful to move quietly, but Numi stirs anyway.
“Mamán?” she asks, her voice thick with sleep, snuggled in her bed.
Their apartment is cramped and windowless, nothing like Minerva’s childhood home. But it’s low-profile, and for the two of them, that means safe.
“Go back to sleep, baby. Mamán’s leaving for work. I’ll return before you know it.”
Numi nods. “Mm-hmm.”
Minerva smooths her daughter's hair. “I love you so much, baby,” she murmurs. “You know I wish it was safe to bring you along, don’t you?”
But Numi is already asleep.
