Summary:

“Come here often?”

“Only when the company is good,” said the woman, “I’m Andy.”

“CJ,” she said as the people inside began counting down.

Notes:

Based on a tweet that said, “one time at a party i kissed someone's girlfriend and to make sure he wasn't mad about it i just kissed him too. i blacked out and woke up to a text in a groupchat with both of them that said "did u make it home safe baby?”

Work Text:

She wasn’t sure who threw the party. It was a friend of a friend or partner of a colleague or something like that, but what she did know was that everyone in DC was there- including her.

It was a nice party, not like the rangers she’d been to in college, with everyone dressed up and politely sipping wine while they waited for the new year.

Finishing her drink, CJ walked over to the red haired woman who’d been watching her all night. She was sitting at the bar, nursing an Old Fashion, but when she saw CJ coming the woman slid off her stool, walking out to the balcony all while glancing over her shoulder to see if CJ followed.

The balcony, overlooking the city, was chilly, lit by a string of lights draped across the top of the wall. The red haired woman leaned against the railing, smirking as CJ approached her.

CJ wanted to say something clever, to make a witty pick up line to tell a quippy joke to make her laugh, but she had had far too much to drink to think of anything remotely memorable.

Instead what she found herself saying was, “Come here often?”

“Only when the company is good,” said the woman, “I’m Andy.”

“CJ,” she said as the people inside began counting down.

“Ten! Nine! Eight!” Their voices were muffled by the glass but CJ could feel the anticipation as midnight, and the new year, steadily approached.

“Seven! Six! Five!”

Andy’s gaze dropped, settling on CJ’s mouth. Her smirk, teasing but polite, never faltered.

“Four! Three! Two!” New year, new chances, new her.

CJ leaned in, kissing Andy squarely on the mouth. Andy reciprocated, tilting her head up to deepen the kiss.

As they broke apart, CJ heard someone clear their throat behind her. Turning, she saw a surprised looking man, balding, with a dark beard.

“Can we help you?” CJ asked, invigorated from the kiss, leaning on the railing beside Andy.

“That’s my wife,” said the man.

“Hi Toby,” said Andy.

“Oh,” CJ glanced between them then said, “Well to keep it fair-“

Stepping forward, CJ grabbed Toby’s lapels and kissed him. He stiffened in surprise at first, before a hand came to settle on her waist, pulling her closer.

“Wow,” CJ mumbled as they broke apart and then everything went black.

…

CJ woke up in bed, her bed, somehow, a fact for which she was grateful for. She was in her dress from the night before but her shoes were off. Staring up at the ceiling, she tried to remember what had happened. She’d been at the New Years party and-

With a groan she covered her face with both hands. She’s kissed both that woman and her husband which was most likely social- if not career- suicide.

Just then her phone, hidden somewhere in her sheets, buzzed. Finding it, she blinked at the text message. She was in a group chat with two other people, Andy and Toby.

Andy: Did you make it home safe baby?

Well, CJ’s new year had gotten a whole lot more interesting.
