Boba Fett had never been one of those kids who had big families with a ton of relatives who gave them everything they wanted. He never had a doting grandmother or millions of cousins to fight with over things. He didn’t even have a mother like most people did just because that was usually how it worked.
But it hadn’t mattered. He had his father. That had been more than enough family to him. Yes, there were clones of his father in Kamino, and Boba knew that they called each other brothers. Boba didn’t consider them his brothers and he never would. He didn’t have siblings.
He just had his father and he was happy with that. The two of them were closer. They didn’t fight much at all. His father wasn’t like some parents he had heard of. His father understood him.
And he was looking forward to working with his father when he was older.
But even if he didn’t, he knew that his father would have been fine with it. His father was supposed to always be with him. When he and his father were together whether it was on Kamino, Slave 1, or someone where else, he was home.
But now his father was gone. He had been murdered by that Jedi, Mace Windu. Windu had taken his only family from him. The Jedi were supposed to be good, but that hadn’t stopped him.
After it happened, Boba had gotten his father’s armor. One of his father’s allies had helped him. He had been one of the only few who had survived or who had stuck around. But Boba knew that more were out there.
They were gone for now.
After, he had gone to his father’s ship. No… now it was his ship, but it didn’t feel like that. His dad had worked with him and taught him to fly it, but he wasn’t nearly as good as his dad was. His dad had been an amazing pilot. There was no one who could stop him.
Even that Jedi who had chased him hadn’t been able to catch the two of them. His dad had just been too good.
Apparently not good enough because he had found them and then the other Jedi arrived. And one of them had been Windu.
“It’s going to be okay, Boba,” his father’s friend said before he got on the ship.
Boba stared at him and then the state turned into a glare. How could he say that it was going to be okay? He didn’t know anything. He wasn’t the one who had lost his only family. No, this guy was old and he had probably a ton of family anyway. He probably had two parents, a brother or sister, and a wife and two and a half kids.
“You can—”
“Shut up,” Boba said, glaring at the man. Maybe if this guy had done more his father would be alive too. But he hadn’t.
And now his dad was dead.
He paused and then reached out. “Boba, I know you’re mad but…”
He trailed off when Boba gave him an even worse look. Obviously, he was mad. His dad was dead.
“Later if you want help getting revenge, I have someone who you can contact,” the man said. Boba couldn’t even be bothered to remember his name right now, even though he had been told it before.
Boba nodded. “I’ll remember that.”
And he would.
Boba Fett might not be an adult now, but it hardly mattered. His father had been a Mandalorian foundling, and even though Boba Fett wasn’t exactly like his father in that way, his father had trained him everything he knew. He had been raised to fight like a Mandalorian. In some ways he was a Mandalorian.
But Boba Fett didn’t consider himself that because it wasn’t like he interacted with them. No, it had only just been Boba Fett and his father.
Boba Fett didn’t say anything else to the father and he went into Slave 1. At first, he wasn’t even sure where he should go because he didn’t have any other family. Since the closest he had left to a house was on Kamino, even if it was just in their main facility, he put the plane on auto pilot to go there.
When he got back, he was greeted by some of the Kaminoans. Taun We, Lama Su, and surprisingly Nala Se came over. Nala Se was surprising since she mostly stayed with her research. The clone she interacted with the most was the girl one.
The girl who the Kaminoans had once wanted to be Boba’s friend. But she was just a clone like they all were, even if she was a girl and people told Boba Fett that she was just like him.
Dad had said that no one was like him and Boba agreed with that.
Taun We paused and then hugged Boba. He knew that he should instantly push her away but for a moment he actually let her hug him. Just for a few seconds. She was… not like a family member to him, but he liked her.
Or at least he used to but now everything was different.
“We are sorry to hear about your father,” Lama Su said.
Boba just glared at him, not bothering to answer.
“He did so much for our people,” Taun We said. And yes, he had done a lot for them, but Dad hadn’t cared about it. He had let them clone him because of what they could offer him. He didn’t care about the Kaminoans.
Not really.
His father hadn’t cared about the Mandalorians even despite that they had raised him. It wasn’t like they had been there for him when it mattered. They had abandoned him.
“You can stay here as long as you need to, Boba,” Nala Se said.
Boba shot her a look too. He didn’t trust her. The girl clone… Omega or something… might trust Nala Se, but he didn’t. He didn’t really trust anyone here. His dad had told him that he shouldn’t trust anyone but him.
That anyone could betray you, but the two of them were family so they would be there for each other.
Dad hadn’t had any family. He had been adopted by the Mandalorians after his parents had died in a tragic accident. Dad had a sister but she had died along with his parents.
“Kamino can be a home to you,” Taun We said.
Boba stared at them all, trying to decide what he should say about all of this. He hadn’t been sure that they would let him stay. But it also didn’t surprise him. If they had demanded that he leave, he would have just taken his father’s things.
He could have made credits on his own. He might be young, but he was a fighter. And he would survive on his own.
He just shouldn’t have to. He should get to have his father with him. His father had been young still. He shouldn’t have been killed. Those fucking Jedi. They ruined everything and yet would act like they were making the Galaxy better.
“Boba?” Taun We said, reaching toward him but then she let her hand fall. “Are you going to be staying here?”
Boba decided that he should say something now.
“I’ll stay for now,” Boba said.
He had no idea how long it would be.
He went back to his and his father’s place. It felt empty without his father there, even though all their things were still there. The whole place was quiet, too quiet. His father had never made too much noise, but still…. This place wasn’t right anymore. Being here, it caused him to feel tense. Almost on edge. Like he had to stay on guard.
But he was making do, even though he didn’t like it here. He was eating and sleeping and doing all he needed to survive. Maybe he would stay here for awhile. The Kaminoans needed him, even if they hadn’t admitted it to him yet.
But things changed one day.
Kamino… well it for the most part it wasn’t decorated for Life Day, but Boba would hear the clones talking about it. Some of them were excited. They were even hoping that they might have a special dinner for it. Some of them were getting their friends and “brothers” gifts.
Boba wasn’t getting anyone gifts and he didn’t think anyone would get him any either. Why would they?
When Life Day finally arrived, he had been walking around the facility about to get some food, but then when he got to the alcove above the dining room, he spotted the girl… Omega… and another clone talking. Neither of them were looking at them. The boy’s existence annoyed him. He couldn’t stand that they all looked identical to him for the most part.
At least the girl looked different with her blond hair… and the fact that she was a girl.
She had weird clothes on too. Boba had seen her a couple times, but she usually wore outfits similar to all the clone children. But right now, she had on a red dress and her hair was done in curls. It must be for Life Day. Nala Se must have done that for her. She had ben wearing red too.
The whole thing was weird to Boba, but he had heard that Nala Se doted on Omega. Well… as much as she could and in her own way. Boba doubted any of the Kaminoans were that affectionate.
“You see them,” Omega said as she pointed at a table that had a group of unique clones sitting at. These clones didn’t look like everyone else. “That’s Clone Force 99. They’re going to be my brothers. They’re going to be my family.”
“Those freaks?” the clone boy asked.
Omega let out a huff and then stood up, even though the two of them had been laying on their stomachs before. She put her hands on her hips. “Don’t you dare call them that. They’re my brothers! And they’re not freaks. They’re the very best.”
The boy sighed and stood up.
“They’re not freaks and you better take that back!” Omega said.
“I’m not taking it back and you shouldn’t want to be part of the Sad Ba—”
Omega didn’t let him finish and she shoved the boy. She was pretty strong and the boy stumbled backward.
“They’re not the Sad Batch and—”
“Omega,” said a sigh. Boba recognized it right away. It was Nala Se who had just walked in. She was giving Omega a look. “You shouldn’t be getting in arguments, Omega.”
“But it’s not my fault,” Omega said with a sigh.
“Yes, it was,” the boy said.
“I was just telling you about my brothers. One day I’m going to be with them again and we’ll be a family and we’ll get to celebrate Life Day and everything together. We’ll be about to sing Life Days carols and build snowmen and exchange gifts and…”
Omega kept going on and on but Boba couldn’t take it anymore. He wasn’t going to continue to listen to this girl talk about how wonderful her life was going to be. Maybe this girl would get to have all of this that she dreamed about or maybe she wouldn’t.
But she had a chance to have a family.
Boba had that stolen from him. His only family was his dad and he was gone now. Forever. Nothing Boba Fett did was going to make a difference. He couldn’t change that his father was gone. He would never be able to have a Life Day with his father again. He would never be able to talk to his father. He would never be able to see him again. His father was gone.
Dead.
Forever.
And Boba Fett wasn’t going to stick around Kamino. No, it had been selfish to do that. He couldn’t pretend that he really belonged here. No, he didn’t belong here or anywhere, but there was something that he could do.
He could get revenge on the Jedi Mace Windu who had killed his father. He would make him pay with his life. And he would kill anyone who got in his way too.
That was all that he could do now.
