It wasn’t supposed to happen. The day started out normal with Satine, Obi-Wan and Master Qui-Gon in their ship, which wasn’t too far from a nearby town. Satine had wanted to have either Obi-Wan or Qui-Gon to go to the town so she could get news about what was going on in the war. Yes, they were able to get some without going to town, but sometimes the news would be out of date. Satine needed to have news that was accurate.
And part of Satine just wanted Qui-Gon to go so she could have some time with just Obi-Wan. She treasured every moment that she had with Obi-Wan, even when Qui-Gon was around, and yet, she liked it better when it was really just her and Obi-Wan. It was more special and Obi-Wan was less tense.
And sometimes she could even make him forget about the Jedi Order. Sometimes it was like they were normal teenagers.
Normal teenagers. Teenagers who didn’t have to worry about war or one of them being a Jedi in training.
Qui-Gon did end up leaving. He had to get supplies nearby so they could fix their ship which was broken and wouldn’t even fly at the moment. He told Satine and Obi-Wan that he would be back soon and that they shouldn’t go far from the ship. And Satine had intended to follow through with that. After all, she could spend time with Obi-Wan in the ship, especially with Qui-Gon not there to babysit.
But he didn’t say they couldn’t leave at all, and eventually they got tired of staying in the ship. Or rather Satine did. Obi-Wan could stay in the ship and meditate for hours. He didn’t get bored. Satine liked to keep busy and when she stayed still… well, then she constantly thought about Mandalore and how she hated that she couldn’t be there ruling her people now when they needed her most.
She studied on the ship constantly, mostly history and classic Mandalorian literature, but she would also work on math and other subjects that she wasn’t as passionate about. Even that wasn’t enough to keep her fully occupied.
And then of course her mind would get busy.
Yes, sometimes she could occupy her thoughts about thinking of Obi-Wan, but even that wasn’t always enough. It was much better when the two of them were doing things together. Even if it was just small things.
Those small things with Obi-Wan seemed special.
So she was more than delighted when he said he wanted to go for a walk with him. She would get to learn more about him. She loved learning even small things about him. She loved talking to him about their lives. She loved his kind personality and how he wasn’t intimidated by her like so many people were. They could actually have debates and he wouldn’t just let her win. She loved that. And she really liked him. Maybe more than she should have since he wasn’t a Mandalorian. And to make matters worse he was a Jedi.
But still she was captivated by him.
And so she was more than just a bit pleased when he asked if she wanted to go for a walk.
Okay, it was more like ecstatic, not that she would act like that. Fancying a Jedi, it really wasn’t the kind of behavior a good Mandalorian should participate in, especially not their leader. She could only imagine what her mother would say. She would be so disappointed and Satine had spent her whole life trying to please her mother, even before her father had passed. And yet… sometimes when she was here with just Obi-Wan, she didn’t care what her family would think.
So of course, she accepted his invitation to go for a walk. She wanted to be with him.
But nothing had gone as planned. She thought they would just go on a walk near the ship. And that they would easily be able to go back to it.
That was not what happened. They were attacked.
Obi-Wan defended her and they got away. He didn’t kill anyone. Satine always told them not to kill, even the people who tried to do that to her. Violence wasn’t a good solution. And they did manage to get away.
But Obi-Wan had been injured.
For a moment, when he had been hurt, Satine had felt something she didn’t usually feel. Red hot anger and the desire for revenge. Her father might have been a warrior, but Satine wasn’t like him in that way. She had seen what war had done to him and that had caused her to become a pacifist.
When he had been hurt though… she hadn’t even felt like herself. Obi-Wan… he was such a good person. He cared about the Galaxy and trying to make it better for everyone. He shouldn’t have to go through this. And she couldn’t help but resent the people who hurt him. The man that she cared so much about.
Even though they escaped, they weren’t able to go back to the ship. Obi-Wan didn’t think that it would be safe and Satine agreed with him.
They went into town which was risky, but they did their best to keep a low profile. A lot of people knew what Satine looked like obviously, but she also looked like a lot of people from Mandalore and Kalevala. And she planned to not draw any attention to herself. She did the best she could and she thought she did a good job.
She and Obi-Wan found a house that looked like it had been abandoned for Life Day and went in. Satine felt bad even about that. She wouldn’t like people breaking into her house, but it wasn’t like they had a choice. They couldn’t be on the streets and draw attention to themselves. She just had to hope that the owner would have understood.
“I’ll contact my master and he’ll come to us,” Obi-Wan said, without a single amount of doubt in his voice. “But it might take him awhile to get here, even if he’s in town.”
“Okay,” Satine said as she looked around the room. It was a beautiful house, and even had a Life Day tree up. That was uncommon. People usually didn’t get trees. But it lit up so brightly, bringing light to the whole area. It seemed almost magical.
Obi-Wan pulled out his comm unit, but it didn’t go as planned. However, he finally sent a message.
“I have no idea if it worked,” Obi-Wan said with a sigh.
She paused and reached out and touched his hand. It was so warm. “It’ll be fine,” Satine said. It was getting dark now. “In the morning, we can try to figure something out or perhaps later tonight.”
Obi-Wan nodded and the two of them sat near the tree. Satine touched one of the ornaments and smiled. She had always loved Life Day trees, but her family usually didn’t have them.
“I wasn’t aware that Mandalorians celebrated Life Day,” Obi-Wan said, looking into Satine’s eyes. Most of the light in the room was coming from the tree, but she could see his eyes perfectly. She would never get tired of looking into those eyes.
“Not all of us do,” Satine said. “But the holiday seems to be spreading all across the Galaxy.” Satine paused and then laced her fingers with Obi-Wan. “I apologize for what happened.”
Obi-Wan frowned. “Why would you apologize?”
“You were injured,” Satine said. With her other hand she touched his arm which had been hurt.
“I’ve been hurt much worse than this,” Obi-Wan said as he squeezed her hand. It caused her heart to beat faster. “It’s really not that severe. I’m already feeling a lot better. It’s just going to leave a bruise.”
“Yes, but still,” Satine said with a sigh. She hated when he was hurt, but especially when it was because of her.
“It’s really fine, Satine,” Obi-Wan said. Satine was so happy that she had finally convinced him to call her by her first name instead of one of her many titles. Her name sounded better coming from his lips than anyone else’s. It was almost like music to her. No, it was better than any music she had ever heard.
He paused and then moved so they weren’t holding hands anymore. Her stomach twisted because she thought that he would then say something about how the Jedi weren’t supposed to have attachments. Sometimes he would say this to her.
It was… frustrating because it just wasn’t right. And Satine knew that Obi-Wan cared about her. She knew he already was attached to her.
And she liked to believe that it was even deeper than that.
She knew that it was with her, even if she too shouldn’t feel this way.
Luckily, he didn’t say anything like that and then instead ran his hand through her blond hair.
“I’m glad you were the Jedi assigned to protect me,” Satine said, meaning every word. She wouldn’t have been able to imagine if it had been someone else.
“You’re so kind and beautiful,” Obi-Wan said. “And—”
“Beautiful? Really?” Satine asked. “I don’t think that’s really all that true, Obi-Wan.” Yes, she was decent looking, but she had classmates who had been much prettier. Satine had always been the smart and clever one. Not the beautiful one.
“Yes, beautiful. It’s very true,” Obi-Wan said. “But what I like most about you is how passionate you are about everything that’s important for you. And your determination.”
Satine looked at him.
“Most people wouldn’t do all that you’re doing to help Mandalore.”
“I’m doing it for my people,” Satine said. “I want future generations… I don’t want them to have to suffer because of war.”
Obi-Wan paused but then he brushed her hair out of her face and kissed her. It caused butterflies to flutter in her stomach like it always did. She deepened the kiss, putting her tongue in his mouth.
Things went further. They sometimes did, but they always stopped at a certain point. But tonight was different. Maybe it was something in the air.
“I don’t want to stop,” Satine said. “I want us to make love…” Maybe it sounded cheesy but she felt like she was in love, despite everything.
“Satine,” Obi-Wan said. She half expected for him to say something about the Jedi and attachments, but she knew they were allowed to have sex. “Are you sure?”
“Positive, this is what I want,” Satine said. “Do you—”
“I want it too,” Obi-Wan said.
They kissed again in the light of the Life Day tree.
They did more in the light of it too. But before they got further, she let him pick her up and they went into one of the bedrooms. That was where they made love. He had thought that she should lose her virginity on a bed. It was his first time too, but he had been worried more about her.
Satine had wondered what her first time would be like for awhile. And in a way it was similar to her imagination and different at the same time. She couldn’t say that it didn’t hurt at first and there were moments where it was awkward, but Obi-Wan was sweet and patient and he listened. He was so sweet and caring, and it did feel right. He learned fast too, and she knew that she was a quick study. She didn’t regret making love with him at all. She liked to think he was glad they did it as well.
It had been meant to happen. And it had been making love and not just having sex. It was so much more than just sex.
“I love you, Satine,” Obi-Wan said after. It surprised her because he was a Jedi, but she was glad he said that. It caused her to beam at him. “I love you so much.”
And she loved him too.
She always would.
