"I forgot how cold japan was in the winter" Iwaizumi was shivering. Hanamaki who was walking behind him laughed, Iwaizumi had gotten back from the USA a few days ago. He's staying with Hanamaki for the time being. Before they all go over to Tokyo together for Christmas and he'll be spending the rest of his break with Oikawa.
Matsukawa was back in sendai too. The trio hung out a few times, each outing was followed by a group zoom call with a pouty Oikawa who felt left out. The new couple was disgustingly in love with each other. Iwaizumi groaned and Hanamaki gagged the moment Matsukawa would start smiling at his phone.
The worst part, however, was the phone calls. Iwaizumi never expected Matsukawa (A 188cm wall of muscle who works at a funeral home) to be the doting kind. So hearing him coo and awe at Oikawa over the phone made Iwaizumi want to drink acid.
Hanamaki and him walked the snow-covered streets of Sendai together, in search of stuff to take on their small trip to Tokyo. Matsukawa had already left for the Capital, in a rush to see his boyfriend again. Which left Iwaizumi and Hanamaki to do all the shopping. They were sure Oikawa and Matsukawa would be shopping too, but Sendai is cheaper than Tokyo. Besides it's not like they were gift shopping, Iwaizumi had already done all of that in the states. They were just getting food and drinks for the evening they'd be spending together.
They found themselves standing outside of a bakery, Iwaizumi gave Hanamaki a look before quickly rushing in to escape the cold. Hanamaki chuckled and followed behind him, Iwaizumi basked in the warmth of the small shop, his eyes looking over the multitude of cake and desserts available.
Hanamaki looked down at one of the cake displays "Hey iwa! should we get a cake?" Iwaizumi raised an eyebrow at him, walking over from his spot near the warm bread to the fridges displaying all kinds of cake "I don't know, will it survive our ride on the shinkansen?"
Hanamaki thinks for a few moments before shrugging his shoulders "if it doesn't we'll just get another one in Tokyo"
"why would we do that when we can just get one in Tokyo"
Hanamaki shook his head like a disappointed father "my dear Hajime have I taught you nothing?"
Iwaizumi gives him a deadpanned look which makes him laugh "I'm just saying that this cake looks too good to pass up, besides the point what did you even want to get here?" Hanamaki looks around at the other pastries available and Iwaizumi mumbles "I didn't even want anything...I walked in cause it was warm" Hanamaki laughs at him making him grumble.
Hanamaki wraps his hand over Iwaizumi's shoulder and drags him towards the fresh bread and muffins "What about these? it looks like something Oikawa would like" Iwaizumi hums and looks at the pastries. Eyes landing on a stack of berry muffins "Let's get those, and maybe something with chocolate?" Hanamaki raises his eyebrows at the sudden decision but shrugs it off "all right, and the cake" Iwaizumi rolls his eyes but the smile on his face exposes his actual feelings "and the cake"
They get back to Hanamaki's place in a rush. The duo had lost track of time while shopping and now they have too much to take and not enough time to get ready. Iwaizumi attempts to pack up all the food and gifts while Hanamaki runs upstairs to grab their luggage and their coats. They run out of the apartment in haste and take a cab to the station. Iwaizumi's legs jittered the whole ride to the station. Hanamaki wasn't making his nerves any better. Hanamaki had his phone in hand and was checking the time every 3 seconds or so. Thankfully, they made It to their train in record time and the cake survived
When they arrived in Tokyo Oikawa and Matsukawa we're waiting for them with open arms. They exchanged pleasantries and the couple helps them carry the ridiculous amount of desert back to the hotel room Oikawa had so graciously booked them. It was a fancy room on the 26th floor with a massive balcony that gave you a gorgeous view of Tokyo. Hanamaki and Iwaizumi stood out in staring in wonder, Oikawa was sporting a smug grin on his face "see I told you guys I got us the best room!"
Hanamaki turns around to stare at him "How'd you even manage to get a room like this at this time of year?!" Oikawa gave him a devious giggle as he walked back into the room "A magician never shares his secrets!!" Hanamaki laughs and follows him inside, leaving Iwaizumi and Matsukawa alone in the freezing cold.
Matsukawa moves to stand beside Iwaizumi near the railing, both of them staring out at the city in silence "So, you and Shittykawa huh?" Matsukawa snorts at the nickname "you'll never let that go will you" Iwaizumi gives him a proud smirk "I've dealt with that snot-nosed brat for too long to just let it go like that" Despite his harsh words, Iwaizumi's tone and expression made it more than clear that his words were iterated with nothing but love and affection.
"Yeah yeah Iwa, Acting like you don't freak out the second he's out of your line of sight" Iwaizumi grimaces, scrunching his nose "you'll understand it soon Matsun. Tooru is a magnet for disaster" Matsukawa chuckles "I'm glad you're supporting us Iwa, know it must be annoying" Iwaizumi nods still staring at the view "Why wouldn't I support you guys? you're my best friends" Matsukawa lets out a breath and starts to walk back inside "Just, I know how you feel about Tooru so I'm glad you're not letting it get in between us" with that, he leaves Iwaizumi alone with his words hanging in the air for Iwaizumi to analyze.
When Iwaizumi walks back inside he sees Oikawa setting up the food they got on the coffee table that they'd dragged into the middle of the room. He looks around for Matsukawa and Hanamaki yet doesn't see them "where are the idiots?" "They went out to get some disposable plates and stuff" Iwaizumi nods and watches Oikawa place down the large box of muffins from the bakery "I got those for you" Oikawa looks up with a questioning look and Iwaizumi nods to the muffins. Oikawa's eyes light up and he takes one out, taking a big bite of it "I had my eyes on them when I opened the box, thank you Iwa-chan!" Iwaizumi takes one out to munch on himself, staring at the clock on the wall "It's almost midnight" Oikawa follows his line of vision, his eyebrows furrow at the clock making Iwaizumi snort "I forgot your dumbass didn't know how to read a clock" Oikawa whines and kicks causing him to laugh "It's exactly 11, So one hour left"
Oikawa sits beside Iwaizumi, laying his head on his best friend's shoulder "you know this will be the first time I'll be spending Christmas away from home" Iwaizumi hums "Yeah, I know how it feels"
"I missed you a lot Iwa-chan. You're my rock so getting used to you not being around was difficult"
Iwaizumi puts a hand on Oikawa's knee "I missed your annoying ass too" Oikawa groans "Can't you be nice to me once Iwa-chan!!"
"I am nice to you!"
"Yeah, yeah, it's always like this. soft with everyone but me" Oikawa's voice is small but his tone is soft "you know I love you Tooru, you're my best friend"
Oikawa smiles at him "I love you too Hajime, I'm so glad you're part of my life"
They sit in silence. Not the awkward kind, but the one where you understand each other so well that you don't need words to communicate. When Hanamaki and Matsukawa got back Oikawa was near dozing off to sleep. Thankfully, the chaos that came with combining Matsukawa and Hanamaki woke him right up.
They sat around the coffee table with carols playing ( credit to Hanamaki's playlist ) and cracked open a case of beer for the celebration. Matsukawa complained about Hanamaki hogging up Oikawa and Iwaizumi groaned at the pointless arguments. Iwaizumi told them stories college, going into detail about the frat parties and outings he got dragged along to, Hanamaki reaches over to him to flick his ear where a black stud is present "I'm guessing that's where you got this huh?" Iwaizumi shoos his hand away "These fucking people man, I got sat in a chair drunk as shit and then had a hole punched into my ear" Oikawa grimaces at him "watch it with the language Iwa-chan you're becoming one of them"
Matsukawa lets out a horrid snort and Hanamaki wheezes, Iwaizumi on the other hand, isn't impressed "Why are you even laughing that wasn't funny" Oikawa joins the laughter breaking Iwaizumi's resolve and pulling a chuckle out of him too "okay enough about America, I need to express how traumatizing it is being on a team with Ushiwaka-chan" Hanamaki gasps, Matsukawa and Iwaizumi share a look "what do you mean on the same team?" Matsukawa asks, Oikawa throws his hands up dramatically huffing "Thank you for asking issei!! USHIWAKACHAN- thought it would be smart to transfer to my university and now we are teammates"
Hanamaki sucks through his teeth giving Oikawa a dramatic look "sucks to suck Oikawa now you're stuck tossing to Suckywaka" Matsukawa chokes on his beer. Making Iwaizumi wheeze. Oikawa freaks and hands Matsukawa a bottle of water while dabbing his face with a tissue "Issei! you can't do that!" Matsukawa half chokes half laughs "do what? choke?" Oikawa smacks his shoulder while Hanamaki and Iwaizumi stare at the scene like it's a circus show.
After Matsukawa survived his near-death experience they get to exchange gifts. Iwaizumi got everyone an array of athletic wear with sweets from America. Everyone stared at his gifts in irony. Hanamaki made everyone soaps. well, attempted to make everyone soaps. The deformed blocks of bright pink soap reeked of strawberry and were poorly wrapped in cling film. Matsukawa got everyone customized keychains with the ugliest group photo they had ever taken with hats, gloves, and scarfs to help with the cold.
Oikawa decided to go all out, He gave Hanamaki a new headset with a customized keyboard making him stare at his gift bag in shock. Matsukawa received a thick winter coat with some hair products and matching bracelets for them, He made sure to attack Oikawa in smooches to show his gratefulness. Iwaizumi gets an album, it's filled with years of achievements and Childhood memories up until Highschool. With the album, he was gifted a weighted blanket.
"I don't know if you can take the blanket back with you, if you can I'll just mail it to you okay?" Iwaizumi nods, before getting up to give Oikawa a tight hug, making Matsukawa grit his teeth. After the gift exchange, Oikawa and Matsukawa went out on a walk down the crowded streets of Tokyo. Matsukawa was sporting his new coat which made Oikawa smile. They had their arms looped together, flakes of snow decorating their hair. as they make their way down the road.
They stood out near a large Christmas tree staring up at the dazzling lights "They're so pretty" Oikawa whispers, Matsukawa looks down at him "yeah they are" Oikawa smiled sweetly and pulls his phone out "let's ask someone to take a photo of us! this is so cute!" Matsukawa nods enthusiastically, they look around a bit before asking a foreign couple to take a few pictures of them. They posed in front of the tree, Matsukawa's arm wrapped around Oikawa's waist and Oikawa's around his shoulders.
Back in the hotel room, Hanamaki and Iwaizumi are laughing at some game show airing on the TV. They finished off the case of beer and were spending the evening waiting for their friends to return "they're sure taking their sweet time aren't they" Hanamaki nods as he scrolls through his phone "sheesh look at this, all romancing" He shows his phone to Iwaizumi where a picture from Oikawa's Instagram is on his timeline "leaving us out of the photos too, damn they're just throwing us out" Hanamaki sobs dramatically tossing his phone on to the bed "we should just date each other, that way they can't leave us out" Iwaizumi freezes before a blush spreads over his cheeks making Hanamaki flush too.
They sat awkwardly for a moment before Iwaizumi spoke up "Are you serious?" Hanamaki sighs "yes iwa, I like you. I like you a lot, and I know you're in love with Oikawa and-"
"Woah, Woah, Woah, What do you mean in love with Oikawa?"
Hanamaki stares in confusion "you're not?" Iwaizumi sits up with a serious look on his face "No? Of course, I'm not he's my best friend and I love him but I am not in love with him."
Iwaizumi reaches over to grab Hanamaki's face, palms cupping his cheeks "I like you too Hiro" Hanamaki's heart explodes. His face gets bright red and his heart rate increases.
"I-Iwa really?" Iwaizumi smiles at him "really" Hanamaki's face breaks out into a big grin. His hands grip Iwaizumi's arms as their faces get closer, Just before their lips touch Hanamaki freezes and Look up at Iwaizumi shyly. Iwaizumi chuckles and lets his head drop onto Hanamaki's shoulder. They both laugh and Iwaizumi pulls back to look at him. Hanamaki giggles, gripping Iwaizumi's collar "stop being a pussy and kiss me" Iwaizumi rolls his eyes and leans forward to finally press their lips together.
Oikawa and Matsukawa thread their fingers together as they walk back to the hotel, Oikawa has a look on his face and Matsukawa questions him "penny for your thoughts?" Oikawa looks up at him with a serious look "I feel like something is happening and I'm being left out" Matsukawa lets out an airy laugh "How about you stop thinking about other people and focus on me" Oikawa blushes, and hugs Matsukawa, rubbing his cold nose against the crook of Matsukawa's neck making him squirm. Oikawa giggled and pressed kisses against his neck. Matsukawa pulls him back and pressed a kiss on the tip of his nose "my pretty boyfriend" Oikawa smiles sweetly. He gets on his tiptoes and kisses Matsukawa making them stumble back a little.
Matsukawa wraps his arms around Oikawa's waist to keep them stable, but presses forward deepening the kiss "my pretty Tooru"
Oikawa exhales and stays wrapped up in matsukawa's arm "best christmas ever, with the sweetest boyfriend ever"
The couple continue to walk towards the hotel, unaware of the surprise waiting for them in their room. That's what's good about Christmas, the gifts keep on giving.
