Chapter Text
Max crouches behind the captain, Adonis, Ellie short on his heels. Adonis is a sniper first and even from some three hundred yards that would be a struggle for a non sniper, the captain is complaining that it’s too easy.
“I could make this shot from a mile away,” he mutters, “The way marauders stand around. Waiting. Waiting.”
Max says nothing. He knows how this goes - the captain will complain, but it’s just him getting in the zone. He doesn’t expect a response.
“Let’s seee.. Right there, and-”
BLAM!
Gunfire sings, six shots one after the other ring out through the sweet summer air. When all four marauders lie dead, the captain stands, leaning slightly on his rifle in a way that is definitely unsafe. One of his quirks. He stands just in time to see a two canids come running towards them - one Ellie shoots down with ease, the captain pulls out his Inferno Scythe from his side and steps towards the other to meet it midair and slice it clean in two.
A third jumps out from the brushes, two more leap towards the captain, howling. Adonis catches one’s leg with another great sweep from the scythe, but the lone one leaps and catches Max before he can pull out his shotgun.
Ellie screams, her gun drowning her out as she fires again and again, recklessly, at the one on Max. A bullet grazes the captain’s leg and he falls back, yelling curses, as a canid takes the opportunity to pounce only to be met by a shotgun blast from Max to the face.
Adonis sits a moment and tilts his head back to lay on the ground. “Fucking hell,” He mutters, “I’m on Terra-2, not Monarch. S’possed to be peaceful. By the Architect..”
Max laughs and stands up. He puts a hand out for the captain, who takes it with a small sigh. Adonis turns and begins sifting through his pockets before pulling out a bandage. He wraps his leg where Ellie’s bullet grazed him and turns to Max.
“You’re hurt,” He says, and steps forward.
Max furrows his brow slightly and brings a hand to his head. Adonis pulls out a little blue bandaid with green and purple planets and white stars on it.
“You keep those on you?” Max asks.
“Just for situations like these.” He sticks it on Max’s nose, where a claw from the canid had dug in, and another bandaid, this one green with black cartoon constellations, on the wound on his forehead. “Good to be prepared, you know?”
“I more meant the patterns. Where did you find these?”
The captain grins. “Made ‘em myself. Or, I made a pattern and asked ADA to. You know how it goes. Cute, aren’t they?”
Max can’t help but sigh a laugh. “Adorable,” He says.
