Work Text:
Light seeps through the window blinds as the sun comes up. It colors the walls and blankets stripes of gold, streaks of yellow in soft skin, and in dark and blonde hair. Lena opens her eyes first, slowly adjusting as she rubs them, and she lets out a yawn.
Her hand wanders to her side, and it lands to a blanket clad Kara Danvers. Oh. Suddenly, she remembers last night. Strong arms around her in an embrace, soft whispers of, “Stay with me tonight?”, “I love you, Lena,” and conversations that held so much intimacy that Lena zoned out midway. Still trying to makes sense of it all in her head. The truthfulness of it all, of it were just another alcohol induced dream that once again helps her sleep.
Kara is just right there. Blonde hair spread across the pillow, some of it mixed with Lena’s hair, like brush strokes of black and gold on white sheets. Her breathing calm and steady, as if a way to say that after everything that’s happened, all the arguments, the shouting, the bouts of forgiveness, being lost and then found, the fights, the losses and victories- Kara, somehow, is the most peaceful when she’s with Lena. It was all too much. Her love, fragile and tender, yet stubborn as she tries to stop herself from saying it out loud despite Kara being asleep.
Oh, how Lena would love to kiss her right now. Just one tuck of Kara’s hair behind her ear, and her palms into warm soft skin, one small touch and Lena feels like she could risk it all. But then there is also the fear; would it be worth it? To succumb to the feeling? Because she knows Kara is kind, too kind to break her heart, but at the thought of rejection, of being let down no matter how kind, would break her heart still.
Tell her, her mind tells her. Tell her, her heart begs. She bites her lips as to calm her nerves, any harder and they might bleed. She swallows the lump on her throat, as if her heart would want to jump out of her itself so it can tell Kara, “I love you,” in her place.
And you see, there’s really not much of a fight when both your heart and mind crave for the same thing, and for Lena, both of it just wants the same person. Strong and kind, and is hope and sunshine personified.
With all of her pent up worries out of the window, at least for a few seconds, Lena leans in. She leans in, and stops. The back of her hand caresses Kara’s cheeks, like testing the waters if she should do it, to wake Kara up like this. With her trembling lips, she makes her way forward, slowly. Slowly. Until her lips’ is a breath away from Kara’s, and at that moment, Lena hesitates.
Coward, her mind says, and her heart constricts as if to ask her why. She closes her eyes as tight as she could, hoping to minimize the voice in her head, and to ease the pain, her lips still centimeters away from Kara’s, soft and pink.
She inhales and is about to pull away when she hears her, voice familiar and is like a warm touch to her soul. It soothes her heart like a gentle caress and a feeling of finally. “Well, if you won’t do it, I will.”
Lena blinks her eyes open, and there is Kara with a smile so charming, and her eyes so very blue. Lena drowns. “I…”
“Come here, Lena.” She drowns, she drowns, and if it’s Kara, she doesn’t want to go back to the surface. “I love you,” her voice trembles, but she’s finally said it. She looks at Kara, her hands shaking as they grip the bed sheets. In front of her, Kara, sweet and lovely stares back at her, her smile not leaving her face. Her eyes shine at the words as if it’s something she’s been waiting for a long time.
“And I love you, Lena.”
Kara sits herself right up and Lena follows her movement with her eyes. “I love you so much, Lena Luthor,” and Lena takes a sharp breath in. Kara’s hand travels slowly until it reaches her hand, making her look at it, and Kara intertwines their hands together.
When she brings her eyes up, Kara has shortened their distance further. With her voice that puts Lena’s being both to calm and a chaos of feelings, Kara asks, “Can I kiss you?”
And oh, Lena’s heart has never been happier. “Please.”
And Kara kisses her, innocent yet excited. Missing and longing. Finally. Despite the course of emotions that makes their way through her, too much that tears introduce themselves at the feel of Kara’s lips on hers, she doesn’t want this to stop. Because finally, finally, Lena feels like she’s home, and there’s no other place she’d rather be.
