Work Text:

Moonlight filtered into the bedroom through a large window, illuminating two figures seated on the luxurious plush chaise lounge.

Princess Adora wrapped the bandage around Catra's wounded arm tightly as the knight in question stayed quiet. The magicat's head was turned away from her and the silence hanging in the air around them was tense. Far from the comfortable lulls they were used to having.

Finally, Adora couldn't bear keeping her mouth shut anymore and spoke. “Seriously, Catra, you have got to be more careful. This is the third time this week!”

The knight only scoffed in response.

“I mean it, Catra. You can't just keep rushing into battles,” Adora berated.

Catra harshly pulled her arm away from her grasp. “Stop scolding me, Adora. What are you, my mother?” She rolled her eyes.

Indignation bubbled up in Adora's chest at how Catra was acting. Here she was, worried and scared to death over her best friend's well being while the brunette is only being difficult.

Adora threw her hands up. “Cat—!” She cut her off.

Catra turned to her, mismatched eyes filled to the brim with an emotion Adora couldn't quite name. “I was only trying to protect you! What did you expect me to do, Adora? Stand by and watch while those bandits tried to kill you? I literally took an oath, promising to ensure your safety, Princess.”

The extra emphasis on her title irked her. It was a light mockery, but it put the difference in their status into perspective.

All of a sudden, Catra's eyes lost all of its fire as if someone snuffed the flames out. She looked away. “I'm your knight, Adora. You are my top priority. I don't matter.”

Adora immediately surged forward at that, grabbing Catra's shoulders and forcing her to meet her eyes. “Don't say that! You matter. Of course you do. You matter to me. More than you'll ever know!”

They held each other's gazes and stayed that way as if time had frozen over to let them have this moment. Catra's eyes searched hers, expression awestruck.

“You matter to me too. A lot.” The magicat blinked slowly.

Adora's breath caught in her throat at the small admission.

“Catra, I . . . ” she trailed off, leaning closer until their faces were only a hairsbreadth apart.

“What is it, Princess?” Catra's breath was hot as it fanned Adora's lips invitingly.

Her knight spoke of her title so softly, so lovingly, that this time, she knew it wasn't a mockery. It was an endearment.

“May I?”

The magicat answered by finally capturing her lips in a sweet kiss.

Oh. Why haven't they done this sooner? This was long overdue, considering that Adora has been in love with her Knight and closest friend ever since she understood what love meant.

Catra's lips were soft. So very soft. And the little purrs that rumbled through her throat threatened to melt Adora's fragile heart.

They shifted closer and closer without breaking the kiss until Catra was settled firmly on the Princess' lap, one hand buried in Adora's blonde locks as the other cradled her strong jaw, claws carefully retracted.

Eventually, Catra pulled away, ripping a whine out of Adora's lips as she tried to chase her Knight's lips to extend the kiss a little while longer.

The action made the magicat giggle. “You're such an idiot.”

Adora shot her a smug smile. “An idiot that's in love with you, maybe.”

The casual confession made the knight look away, the beginnings of a blush dotting her freckled cheeks.

“I love you, too.”

Adora leaned in again, heart fluttering pleasantly inside her chest, and planted a small kiss on Catra's lips.

When she pulled back, she caught a glimpse of Catra's bandaged arm and her smile fell. “Seriously though, you have to be more careful. I just—” her mouth formed a grim line as she continued to stare at it. “—I can't lose you.”

Catra took hold of her hands and their eyes met. “Why do you think I keep charging into fights? I can't bear to lose you too.” Her tan fingers caressed Adora's pale knuckles.

The Princess let out a sigh and touched their foreheads together. “Just, be careful next time.”

A smirk formed on her lover's enticing lips, showcasing her pointed fangs. “Always am, Princess.”

“Brat.”

“Just kiss me.”

Adora didn't need to be told twice.
