Work Text:
Diavolo sat back in his chair, giving the large stack of paperwork a glare. He was absolutely sick of looking at it, and it was barely noon. Rubbing his eyes, he sighed heavily and tried to psych himself up so he could get back to working. Just as he reached for the next form, there was a sharp knock on the door. He glanced over to find Barbatos standing there, a small smile on his face.
“My lord, you have a visitor in the sitting room.”
The Prince could have jumped for joy at the excuse to leave his desk. He was even more excited when he saw that you were his visitor. Noticing that you seemed to have a few pieces of luggage with you, he was quite confused… and perhaps a touch concerned. What were you planning? Were you trying to leave? Before he could speak up, you caught sight of him and leapt to your feet with a bright grin.
“Dia!! I have exciting news! Come here!”
Closing the distance between you, he was cautious about sharing your excitement. “What is all this?”
“You, sir, are playing hooky today. It’s Saturday, and if you’ve been anywhere near as busy as Lucifer, you haven’t had a day off in weeks. So, we are camping out here in this room all day!” You began emptying out a duffel bag, pulling out a ridiculous amount of blankets and pillows, finally turning to him with a small device in your hand. “We’re building a deluxe blanket fort and hiding out to binge movies and snacks. No butlers or nosy demon brothers allowed!”
Your excitement was infectious, and his laughter boomed throughout the room. “I’ve never had a blanket fort before!”
The two of you set about making a huge, extravagant blanket fort. Solomon had put a spell on your bag to make it fit more, so you had a seemingly unending supply of comfortable blankets and plush cushions. You set up your mini projector, linked it with your DDD, and started pulling containers of food out of your other bag. “Don’t tell Barbatos, I brought tons of junk food for our marathon. Oh! I almost forgot the finishing touch.” Peeking your head out, you taped a “no entry without password!” sign on the front, and settled in.
Diavolo was excited. He never got many chances to do normal, silly things, and the idea of being able to do this with you of all people…well, he couldn’t be happier. You’d brought a wide variety of films, so he chose one at random. He was less interested in the movie than he was in cuddling up at your side with homemade mini pizzas. It turned out to be an absolutely terrible horror movie, and your snarky commentary had his laughter booming in the enclosed space. When it was done he decided to hunt for another horror film. He figured it could go one of two ways. One: you’d be scared and he could pull you into his arms to comfort you. Two: He’d get to hear more of your hilarious remarks. He considered either outcome a win, though maybe he was slightly hoping for the first one.
This film turned out to be about a virus turning humans into giant zombie wererats, and it was hilariously awful. He was delighted when you decided to simply crawl into his lap and pull his arms around you, and he pulled you tight against his chest as he leaned against the cushions so he could comfortably rest his chin on your shoulder. He could feel your laughter rumbling through your body, your happiness spreading a warmth through his body. He couldn't remember the last time he'd been so content. He kissed your temple and opened his mouth to tell you how happy he was when suddenly he heard the distinctive clicking of Barbatos' shoes.
When the footsteps stopped in front of the fort, a stern throat-clearing was heard. "Young Master, may I remind you that-"
You lunged forward and poked your head out, reaching up to tap the sign and then bringing your finger to your lips. "Shh! No password, no lecture."
Barbatos sighed, "Then what's the password?"
Rolling your eyes good-naturedly, you clicked your tongue. "I'm not telling you, obviously." Ducking back inside, you settled back in the prince's lap as the butler stewed outside. Dia hated the thought of cutting the day short, but thought maybe he should, if Barb was coming to seek him out. He was just about to say something when you turned to him with a devilish smirk and whispered, "Watch this."
Pausing the movie, you leaned back out and addressed the annoyed butler. "Hey, I'll give you the password if you want to join us. This movie is great! It's about giant zombie rats!" Barbatos nearly squeaked, rushing out of the room with a barely dignified huff. Giggling, you once again took your spot in Diavolo's lap. "There, he shouldn't bother us again for a while. Maybe I should leave this here so you can torture him with it."
The two of you collapsed against the cushions in a fit of laughter, picturing Barbatos trying to ignore the movie. As he caught his breath, he reached to start the movie back up, tucking you close against his chest. "Thank you so much for this," he murmured.
Wiggling around to face him, you gifted him a soft smile and gently rubbed your nose against his. "I get the feeling you've never really had much chance to do childish things, even when you were a kid. So I figured you deserved a day of silliness."
Briefly overcome with a sudden wave of emotion, he swallowed around a small lump in his throat and laid a soft kiss to your forehead. "You don't know how much this means to me. Or how much you mean to me. You make me so happy. I love you."
Giving him a soft kiss back, you then tucked your head under his chin, snuggling up to him with a happy sigh. "I love you too. Now, what you say to a nap?"
He knew he should be working, and that he'd pay for deserting his work. But right now, in the secluded world of the blanket fort, with a ridiculous movie droning in the background and his beloved human in his arms, he drifted off with a smile on his face. It was a great day indeed.
