Forgotten Ancient Melody

Summary:

Naruto and Sasuke are influenced more by their immediate previous lives than in canon. And a lot more people are reincarnations than given in canon. Just how influenced they are depends on the individual. Basically, this is I guess what might have happened if the whole reincarnation thing had more of an influence on the anime. Also, since I heard that it’s only Indra and Ashura’s chakra that reincarnate, I played with that and had souls reincarnate across the ’verse. (Hint: it’s Madara and Hashirama’s souls that are reincarnating as Sasuke and Naruto.)
Like, I think Ashura and Indra get mentioned a lot in the prologue, and then not really much ever again except maybe at the ending?

Warning: updates sporadic—I haven’t written the entire thing yet.
...
Then again, maybe there are some things that I'll just leave as they are. I have the unfortunate habit of getting attached to certain scenes and ideas. I'll still fix some stuff, though.
(Working title also subject to change. At least this is what the last one was supposed to be. I think.)

Chapter 1: Prologue: Logistics

Notes:

this prologue substantially tonally different from the rest of this fic.

Also: are you kidding? I know nothing about Naruto lore. I've just had a lot of the later twists spoilered for me, one way or another. I'm (almost) halfway through Shippuden, if that helps any.
I don't wanna write this thing, but I really want to read stuff like it and almost no one seems to be using this idea, and those that do usually just replace Naruto (and/or Sasuke) so that we have an adventures-of-Founders-in-the-modern-day fic, which is nice and all, but not really what I'm looking for? I mean, I love reincarnation fics, but I also really like Naruto (and maybe even Sasuke?) and I wanna keep them, too.
S'yeah, pay attention to them tags up thar. Not everyone changes just because they were someone else in a past life, especially when they never learn about it.
It takes all kinds to make a village, or whatever....

Chapter Text

This is how it works: even without that weird ghostly residue of the brothers' chakra, there's a quiet, truer sort of reincarnation working in the background, unbeknownst to just about everyone.  Or maybe everyone.  Real transmigration of the soul stuff.  These souls go from body to body, almost never right after they've died, and often in groups.  It's just how it works.

It has been theorised (by some scholars with way too much time on their hands) that this delay in the reincarnation process that has been sometimes observed is perhaps due to the aforementioned chakra echoes manifesting in pairs at various points throughout history.  Those chakra signatures only appear after both of their current generation of hosts are dead.  That can mean a hefty number of years with only one of the two living.  Maybe the afflicted souls get used to that idea.

It's probably just the way that souls like to gather together in familiar patterns.

Here's the thing: give a thousand years, and still statistical probability suggests that it's highly unlikely that the chakra signatures will just happen to follow their previous incarnation to its new vessel.  For one thing, souls can reincarnate across family lines, but the brothers' are bound each to his own.  For another thing, there's that pesky years-gap dilemma--and Indra always manifests first.

And there's no guarantee that the soul that hosted them previous will be reborn within the proper timeframe.  Once both Indra and Ashura's hosts are dead, both manifestations tend to seek out a new host quick.

So yeah, this time's a bit odd.  That probably explains why these souls got more than the reverberating subliminal knowledge that was the most that was observed in previously recorded cases of reincarnation.  Being able to travel unfamiliar streets without guidance, recognising important figures (to the previous individual) without being introduced, learning techniques unusually quick.  (Hey, they had more than a few reasons for being a bit disturbed by Itachi's quiet weariness.  An old soul was he, and quick on the uptake.)

Hashirama Senju waited for Madara Uchiha.  He must've wanted answers, or just to see whether or not madness fled Madara's soul with Madara's last breath.  But he never got his answer 'cause Madara reincarnated basically pronto instead, and, resigned, Hashirama followed suit soon after.

And Ashura and Indra independently chose the same two, because they were the right age or whatever.  Who knows how the mind of inhuman entities that technically don't have minds and probably don't qualify as entities work?

That was how it accidentally happened that both the soul and the chakra found themselves reunited in the next host/incarnation.  For the first time.  And it was in both cases, too! That's bound to screw with the fabric of the universe.

Eh, maybe it'll turn out okay, though?

(Who am I kidding?  Madara Uchiha is involved.)

Notes:

They're totally saying "Ashura". Took me a while to be sure. Lemme fix that.

So, watching, it's sorta also pretty clear that they really are talking about plain old reincarnation when it comes to Indra and Ashura. I won't bore you with an essay on the history of conceptions of the soul and its attributes and how that could possibly work through different lenses. And I'll leave this prologue as it is because I made the "only" chakra thing important as a marker why Naruto and Sasuke are different from other incarnations of Indra and Ashura.
You're not here to read an essay, so I'll just give you a couple of thoughts:
1. "chakra" is composed of the combination of "physical" and "mental" energies, as we are taught early on in part one. In the Chunin Exams, "physical" energy is represented by the "earth" scroll, and connected with the physical body. "Mental" energy is represented by the "heaven" scroll, suggesting that it encompasses what we would think of as the soul. So chakra, far from being an energy separate from the soul, is more soul + body.
2. there is a historical distinction made in some western cultures between the ideas of "spirit" or "breath" ("thumos") and "animus" or "soul" ("psyche"). I think I'm remembering that right.
This means that the concept we in the Modern Western World usually call "soul" is a combination of these two attributes. If you separated one of them, you could have someone reincarnate their souls without necessarily precluding a different, less permanent aspect from existing separately. Separately enough, say, that it could be reanimated and function independently of that other half, although that incomplete soul might not function quite right.
That's just a couple of arguments and thoughts for you.
Sorry for droning on and my miniature essay. I hope you enjoyed it, or it made you think, at least.

Still, it's something to keep in mind in the increasingly likely chance that I end up writing the fic I wrote this fic to avoid writing....
