Work Text:
The howling wind made the outside rain hit their window faster, the cold air slowly seeping into the room as Daisuke kept stirring his pot, thankfully that neither him or Ken had to go out today for anything. Usually, Ken would be heading out right now to fill out paperwork over the case he was working on but the case had gone cold so he was granted a day off while forensics was running some tests on the evidence they had brought in. And Daisuke just didn’t want to go open the ramen stand in this cold weather when he could spend the entire day with his boyfriend.
“Daisuke?”
He glanced up to see a sleepy Ken rubbing his eyes, dressing in Daisuke’s hoodie and sweats. God, he was just so cute that Daisuke still couldn’t believe that he was dating this smart, clever creature but then again, they balanced each other so well that even Takeru and Hikari couldn’t say much. How could they when all those years ago he and Ken had been the first to jogress in the midst of battle, their heartbeats meshing so well.
“Hey, I’m just making some hot cocoa. Want some?”
Ken raised an eyebrow as Daisuke laded the light brown liquid into mugs for the two of them, knowing V-mon and Wormmon wouldn’t be up for another couple of hours. “You made cocoa but not breakfast?”
“I know you’ve been craving rice so the rice is still cooking but I made all the other side dishes like an hour or so ago. Not my fault you’re a heavy sleeper when you need to catch up on dreaming. Still down and stay still will ya?”
Ken chuckled, shaking his head as he did what Daisuke told him to do. He sat down and sipped the cocoa he knew Daisuke had painstakingly crafted over years of taste-testing ingredients. Daisuke leaned down to press a kiss on Ken’s forehead before sitting down himself. Now all that was left was for the rice to finish cooking so he could make their breakfast.
“So, Ken how’s that coworker of yours?”
Ken groaned, hiding his face in one hand as he subtly flipped Daisuke for asking that terrible coworker of his. “She still tries to feed me that disgusting bento of hers. Oh my god it’s so salty and chewy and I keep escaping to the men’s restroom to just be able to get a moment to myself. And Minabe-san just stands there and laugh when Popuri-san follows me everywhere. It doesn’t even matter that I have a picture of you on my desk and wallet, she’s determined to get me to ask her out.”
Daisuke snorted. “That’s because you’re too nice to tell her off. Just say she’s not your type and to stay away from you and everything will work out.”
“Terada-san tells me I should talk to HR but I’m hesitant.”
“I’m not, I’ll email them for you if you want.” A ding broke Daisuke’s train of thought. “Oh, the rice is done, ready for some breakfast? Want more cocoa?”
Ken checked his empty mug, blinking at how observant Daisuke had been. He held up his mug and smiled as he received a kiss on his fingers. “Yes, to both. I’m always surprised because I never notice when I finish my cocoa, it’s just that good that I never sipping it. Did you change something about the recipe? It tastes silkier.”
“It’s got whiskey in it, just for today. I thought it was appropriate for the weather.” He winked as he gave Ken his mug back. “So, the digimon can’t have any. Don’t let their sad eyes affect you this time Ken. Remember last time?”
They both paused as they remember the absolute chaos that had happened when both digimon had drank Daisuke’s alcohol filled cocoa. They were still finding random pieces from a puzzle that digimon had been trying to do before they had given up and sent the pieces everywhere. Just last night Ken had found a piece in his shoes. Ken sighed, “I’ll try.”
Daisuke snickered while putting plenty of rice into two bowls. “You do that. So, did you want to start that new drama after breakfast? I heard it was supposed to be really good.”
“Yes please.” Ken took a gulp of his cocoa, closing his eyes to savor the warmth the drink brought back to his system. He could never had too much of this cocoa, not when Daisuke made it. “I heard that Yoko Ono was supposed to be in it so I’m very curious.”
Daisuke brought their bowls to the table, his with plenty of fish and sesame seeds and Ken’s with a healthy balance of fish and vegetables. He grabbed the soy sauce and sesame seeds, placing them in front of Ken before handing over a pair of chopsticks.
“Oh, sounds like fun. I know that V-mon and Wormmon are going to binge watch that anime that Tailmon recommended. The one with the kid with the thing in his arm.”
Ken raised an eyebrow and Daisuke shrugged his shoulders. “I don’t know. Anyways they’ll be busy until dinnertime so we can cuddle all we want.”
Ken blushed, reaching out to smack a smirked Daisuke as he sipped his cocoa. “Shut up.”
Daisuke kept quiet as Ken started to pout, knowing the moment he said anything, Ken would rebuke the entire thing. So he kept quiet, focusing on mixing up his rice as Ken took a bite of fish. The silence between them was nice as they relaxed to the sound of the rain. It reminded Daisuke of the digital world, whenever they camped out in a cave away from the rain while helping others. Those times where he was wrapped in a blanket, softly speaking to the others while waiting for the rain to go away, it was so nostalgic.
“What are you thinking about? I can never tell when you have such a straight face on.”
Ken tilted his head as Daisuke shook his head, swallowing his food before responding to Ken. “Nothing much. The rain just reminded me of camping out in the digital world. I kind of miss going back and being able to go on an adventure but I know that that world doesn't need us anymore. Kinda sucks but you know.”
“I miss it too.” Ken sighed into his bowl, his chopsticks picking up a slice of eggplant. “Wormmon was just saying the other day that he wanted to go back and take a walk in the forest but I just don't have the time to take him right now and I know you don't either. Maybe come the new year, we can plan a small trip, just the four of us.”
Daisuke grinned, bringing Ken's knuckles up to his lips to brush a kiss on each one. “Sounds good to me. We can have a picnic and everything! Just don't let Miyako hear about it or everyone else will want to come as well.”
“I know I know. Now let's hurry up and finish eating, I'm so curious about that drama.”
Daisuke hummed, moving his chopsticks quickly to shove the food right into his open mouth while Ken mildly picked up the pace. It was such a simple morning for the two of them, hands reaching out to intertwine as they finished their food, cocoa filling the room with such a sweet scent between them. Daisuke couldn't ask for anything better.
