He sat under a tree, ignoring the calls of his name from Lance, Eugene and Cassandra.
He had heard it.
Heard what Eugene said.
“Can’t he do better?” He asked. “I hate seeing him all over our little buddy!”
“Come on, Flynn…” Lance had said. “They went through so much and came out together. That must mean something.”
“Actually, Lance…” Rapunzel said. “I also…think they’re moving too fast. This is Varian’s first relationship…Varian could have met other boys at one of our parties or balls. Someone who could have swept him off his feet and danced into the night with him.”
“But he found Hugo. And after everything that happened, I think he has a better relationship than some noble or dance into the night…” Lance grumbled.
“Maybe your right…” She said. “But still…”
“And they’re sleeping in the same room, always together alone! I don’t like Hugo’s intentions with Varian!”
“I’m more scared he’ll hurt him again…”
“Guys, come on.” Lance sighed.
“Listen, I don’t like him with my brother. End of story…oh.”
Eugene looked at Hugo, blood draining from his face.
“No, by all means…” Hugo sneered. “Go on…”
“Hugo, we…we just care about Varian.” Rapunzel said.
“So do I.” Hugo said, shoulder checking Eugene as he stalked to the village.
He sighed as he sat, watching rain drops fall.
Varian.
His Varian.
Of course he was too good for Hugo.
But all the little things made Hugo fall in love with him more.
The loud snoring from a long day, the way his bucked teeth bit his lip when he was rewriting formulas, how he lifted a foot when reaching for a book on a high shelf, the warmth of his skin on his each morning, the soft sighs in his ear when they hugged, the way he grinned when he saw something new, the crinkle over his nose when he got frustrated…
Every little thing, down to finding a new scar or darker colored freckle in his shoulder.
Hugo knew Varian was too good for him…and Varian sometimes said the opposite.
How could he be too good for Varian?!
He was an orphaned thief! He had hurt him, betrayed him and Varian…
Still looked at him like he was the most precious metal…when Varian was his perfect gem.
“I thought you’d be here.” A voice said.
He looked up to see his boyfriend, hair wet and smiling down at him.
“Goggles, you’re gonna get sick.” He said.
“So are you.” He said, leaning against the tree.
“How did you find me?”
“This is Ruddiger’s favorite tree. You’re always here.” He said.
Hugo sighed and stood, opening his arms.
Varian hugged him. “They told me. I punched Eugene.”
Hugo pulled him back, holding his arms.
“You punched Rider?”
“Well, we can call it a punch, rather than me hitting a grown man who barely flinched with my fist.”
“Aw, Babe.” Hugo whispered and kissed his hair.
“What’s wrong?” Varian asked, looking up. “You know I love you and I want to be with you.”
“Not some noble that can charm you and dance away into the night?” He grumbled.
Varian smiled and pulled him from under the tree into the rain, then took off Hugo’s glasses, tucking them in his shirt pocket.
“What?” Hugo asked.
“Dance with me.” Varian said, placing a hand on his shoulder and facing him.
Hugo chuckled but took Varian’s free hand and placed his other hand on his waist. Varian rest his forehead to Hugo’s and they swayed.
Varian led them into a lose waltz, both more concerned with stealing kisses and pressing cheek to cheek. The rain slowed into a light shower over them. Both completely drenched, but laughing as they spun faster and faster.
Hugo let go of Varian’s waist to spin him and press his boyfriend’s back to his front.
“I love you.” Varian hummed as Hugo held him, swaying.
“I love you too.” Hugo whispered, kissing the shell of Varian’s ear.
A little bit off, hidden in a doorway, Eugene sighed.
“Okay…maybe we were—”
“We were.” Rapunzel said, smiling. “Oh...they look so happy.”
She leaned her head on Eugene's shoulder.
“See?” Lance said, chest puffing out as the boys faced each other and spun again. “What I tell you?”
Varian pulled Hugo close and kissed him.
“Hey, Bluebird?” Hugo said against plush lips.
“Yeah?”
“What do you say we get out of these wet clothes and into a warm bath?” Hugo asked.
“I say absolutely.” Varian said.
