Work Text:

If Poe had been any less exhausted, he wouldn’t have been able to sleep at all that night. Of course, his heat went out during the coldest month of the year. Of course, he couldn’t get it fixed until the next day. Of course, Ranpo offered to let Poe crash at his place for the night. Of course, Ranpo only had one bed.

At first, the night was agonizing. Ranpo fell asleep immediately, naturally, it was his bed after all and he didn’t overthink anything like Poe did. On the other hand, Poe lay rigid and stiff, not daring to move an inch in case he accidentally brushed against Ranpo. His poor, little gay heart wouldn’t be able to handle that.

Ranpo adjusted in his sleep, rolling to face Poe and slinging one arm over him. Poe thought he was going to die. He choked on air, trying to keep quiet so he didn’t wake Ranpo up but at the same time wishing he could scream and shove Ranpo away. After a while he was able to calm his racing heart back down and, finally, he drifted off to sleep. It wasn’t a comfortable night of rest but Poe was able to sleep soundly enough.

Even still, he was the first one awake, relieved and a little disappointed to find Ranpo had adjusted more in the night and no longer had his arms around Poe. Instead he lay on his back, his one arm draped across his belly, snoring ever so softly. The rays of the morning sun hit his face so it was illuminated with a soft glow. His eyelashes fluttered ever so softly and his lips were parted slightly. They were chapped and, at the same time, so very kissable.

Poe swallowed, twisting to face Ranpo, trying to shake the thought from his mind. But it wouldn’t leave him be, taking root and not willing to let go. He inched his face closer. It was ok, right? I mean, if Ranpo was awake it’d be a different story. But Poe could get away with a little peck on the lips, just before Ranpo woke up.

He steeled himself and leaned over Ranpo, hesitating with his lips centimeters away from Ranpo’s, his confidence quickly fleeing him. However, before he could pull back, Ranpo’s eyes flew open and he grinned. “Good morning to you too.”

Poe screamed. Literally screamed, and fell out of the bed, desperately trying to put distance between himself and a cackling Ranpo. He scrambled to his feet and bowed multiple times. A flurry of, “I’m so sorry!” left his mouth, only stopping when Ranpo slid out of bed and grabbed Poe by the shoulders, still grinning.

Then he stood on his tiptoes and placed a quick, chaste kiss against Poe’s flushing cheeks. “Good morning, Poe.”

Poe hid his red face in his hands and mumbled out a, “Good morning, Ranpo.”
