being with you (baby it's a gift)

Summary:

A feel-good christmas fic, featuring hawks and dabi being completely in love, miruko and fuyumi being the epitome of a healthy relationship, and a sprinkling of some 1A kids here and there.

(This piece is part of the 2021 BNHA Secret Santa challenge)

Notes:

This is a lil fic, written for my lovely giftee, berry! (@berrynthewood if you want to find her on tumblr). Hopefully it's what you wanted - I included dangerous amounts of fluff and absolutely awful dialogue scenes. If anything, I really enjoyed writing it, and your prompt was ridiculously cute and gave me a lot to work with. I hope you don't mind the few random ships I threw in here and there - I couldn't help myself. It was lots of fun doing my secret anon asks these past few months, and you were so helpful and patient. Hope you enjoy <3

Chapter 1: Christmas Eve

Chapter Text

"Keep laughing, and I swear to god I'll rip your wings off"

Hawks pressed a hand against his mouth firmly. He was not laughing. He was not. It was just, his boyfriend, who was an high-ranking, fearsome villain, was currently attempting to impersonate a Christmas tree. Or at least, that's what it looked like from the amount of tinsel winding over his chest and around his legs, restricting his movement so much the most he could do was shuffle oddly, glaring at hawks with venom.

"Birdie, if you don't get your ass over here right now I can promise you'll regret it" Dabi spat, and under normal conditions keigo would be intimidated but dabi looked so pitiful that he felt his lips quirking upwards. Muffling a laugh, he took a teasing step backwards and watched as a crimson flush spread over dabi's face.

"Hawks!-", he slipped a hand into his pocket where his phone lay snugly "You put that down right now, or I swear to god-!"

Click!

"Hawks!" Dabi bellowed, trying to take a step forward and instead wobbling precariously, almost toppling onto his face. Hawks' ribs ached as he laughed, his cheeks stretching wildly into a smile as collapsed onto the sofa, clutching his phone.

"Delete it" Dabi snapped, the drop of sweat on his forehead exposing his nerves. "Hawks, you better not even think about sending it to that fucking rabbit woman".

"Her name is Miruko" Hawks supplied in an irritating matter-of-fact tone as he sent her the picture with a satisfying little "woosh" sound. She responded instantly with a clip of a cat that was struggling desperately to escape from a box of Christmas decorations. Hawks cackled again, and dabi looked so red in the face it was concerning.

"You spiteful little bastard" He said hotly, looking like a petulant child "I'm in here tryin' to decorate your stupid fucking Christmas tree and you're laughing at me?'. Flashing him a glowing smile, hawks hopped to his feet, finally taking pity on his boyfriend. Despite dabi's thunderous expression, his gaze softened when hawks tip-toed to press a kiss to his cheek.

"You love me really" He hummed smugly, giving him a light pat on the cheek before turning to leave. "Wha-Where are you going birdie?" Dabi spluttered after a minute, and once again hawks had to restrain himself from laughing. "Dabs, can't you just burn through the tinsel?" He asked and suddenly dabi looked extremely embarrassed.

"Yeah, I can but I didn't want to ruin it" He mumbled, and hawks' eyebrows quirked upwards in confusion, giving his boyfriend a confused look. "Why?" He said with a bemused look "It's just tinsel. In fact, I think we have another box upstairs anyway", letting a few of his feathers slip off to investigate.

Dabi scowled and hawks hummed when his feathers brushed against an itchy texture he was all too familiar with. "We have three other boxes actually" Hawks told his boyfriend with a wink, "One of them a gift from your dear sister - wouldn't you rather use that?"

Dabi muttered something intelligible under his breath.

"What?" Hawks asked, unable to keep a smile from quirking at his lips.

His close friends, whilst supportive of his "secret" relationship with dabi that had started when he was a double-agent and finally got a label after Endeavour's arrest, often told him he was crazy for being in a relationship with someone so cold and aloof. Their concern was touching, but the truth was sometimes dabi got flustered so easily it made hawks feel suave. Or, more suave than he already was - his silver tongue reputation wasn't based on nothing.

"I like this one better" He repeated in a louder voice, looking disgruntled. Hawks' wings twitched as he resisted the urge to spread them, feeling flushed under the weirdly intense look dabi was giving him.

"I like em better cos they're the same colour as your wings" He admitted finally, and fuckshit, what was hawks saying about him being suave and dabi being easily-flustered? That was fake. Complete nonsense.

He was already blushing but dabi, seeing an opportunity to fully turn the tables and get some revenge, added on another comment, involving the colour red and something much less innocent than the colour of his wings.

Needless to say, Hawks did free Dabi, but he didn't quite get around to decorating the Christmas tree, instead giving his boyfriend a golden opportunity for revenge and a chance to get creative with fuyumi's gifted tinsel.

"They're fucking late" Miruko announced with a scowl, flopping onto the sofa in a slightly over-dramatic manner.

"Language honey" Fuyumi told her reproachfully, continuing to stir the batter with the sort of patience only school-teachers could achieve.

"I know, I know" Miruko groaned, splaying her arms out in frustration and nearly knocking out the beautifully-decorated Christmas tree, "You don't like it when I swear cos then you swear and then those little fuckers you teach start doing it but in this life-"

Fuyumi gave her a sharp look. Miruko promptly stopped her explanation about why learning to swear at a young age was actually beneficial and picked up her phone, scowling at the little "read" comment beneath her texts. That fucker had left her on read! He was probably doing some disgusting shit with his psycho boyfriend instead of tidying their apartment ready for Miruko and Fuyumi to come round. She sighed deeply.

"They aren't really late" Fuyumi told her girlfriend, smiling fondly in spite of the murderous expression of Miruko's face, "It's only been 10 minutes. I'm sure Keigo will give us a call any moment and ask us to come round".

Miruko raised an eyebrow, reaching up to gather her hair into a ponytail before stopping half-way, remembering it was now cropped short. It was funny - she'd gotten used to her prosthetic arm in little time, but she often reached for her hair, wanting to braid it or style it. It may have been inconvenient during hero work, but she'd kept it long ever since she was a little girl, and there was nothing more calming for her than settling down and brushing her hair out.

Fuyumi, being her wonderful self, noticed instantly and placed the bowl of batter gently on the counter-top. She then proceeded to let out a tired sigh and lean against as if someone had just kicked her in the back. Miruko turned her head instantly, her normally fierce expression concerned.

"Babe?" She asked, getting to her feet, "are you alright?".

Fuyumi let out another pitiful sound. "Tired" she told Miruko, who'd rushed over to prop her up, easily supporting her weight which did not make fuyumi blush.

"Tired?" Miruko repeated, frowning "Do you want to sleep or-"

Oh. It hit her suddenly - her girlfriend was playing up the dramatics in the hope that Miruko would come rushing over, forget about her hair and find a different coping method. She loved styling her hair yes, but that had been her coping method before she had fuyumi. She could deal with being completely bald if it meant she got to come home to her girlfriend and her sweet, misguided antics.

"You want some help with the cake?" Miruko offered innocently, and fuyumi gave her a nod, even throwing in a yawn for a good measure. Miruko lips twitched, trying hard not to laugh at how much she was playing it. Well, miruko was nothing if not a team player, so she promptly picked fuyumi up and placed her on the counter-top.

"Miruko!" She gasped, looking wonderfully flustered "You can't-"

"Relax" Miruko told her firmly, resisting the urge to flex or something, just to see that blush spread across fuyumi's pretty features, "I'm making the cake now - you just watch".

Fuyumi did indeed blush, but she looked content to let Miruko try her hand at stirring the batter, happy that she was no longer sadly fingering her cropped locks. Well, happy until she saw the way her sweet, talented girlfriend absolutely destroyed her cake.

"What are you doing?!" She cried, watching her sloppily whisk the batter - she wasn't even trying to fold it correctly! "You need to make a figure of 8!".

"Really?" Miruko said, looking so genuinely confused that Fuyumi almost brought it. She could see her lips twitching though - she wasn't fooled. If miruko wanted to play dirty, well, fuyumi could play dirty too. To prove it, she leant forward and kissed her on the lips, surprising Miruko so much it was a miracle she didn't drop the bowl right then and there.

"Yumi!" She gawked, blinking at her normally mild-mannered girlfriend "What the hell?".

"What?", Fuyumi said, mimicking her previous look of confusion whilst she dipped her finger into the batter for a quick taste.

Miruko took a second to unfreeze, shaking her head at her girlfriend before taking a large spoonful of the mixture and shoving into her mouth.

"Miruko no!" Fuyumi laughed, reaching forward to yank the bowl out of her girlfriend's arms and dissolving into hysterical giggles when she held it above her reach, continuing to desperately try to shovel in a spoonful at the same time.

In a rather embarrassing moment Fuyumi leant so far forward that she slipped off the counter, so Miruko shot forward to catch her and promptly dropped the bowl, giving them a healthy splattering of batter. Collapsing into a heap on the floor, they gasped for air between their laughter and a few messy kisses.

Unlike Hawks and Dabi, the pair managed to pull themselves together a few minutes later, clambering to their feet. Whilst miruko hastily tidied and wiped, fuyumi set about putting the cake in the oven to cook and prepare some icing. As miruko put it, "no-one wants to eat a cake that looks like it was decorated by a middle-aged white man", so she made sure to add liberal amounts of red and green food dye to achieve a perfect, obnoxious Christmas shade.

"It smells great babe" Miruko told her once she'd wiped down the last of the raw mixture, her ears twitching happily. Fuyumi pointedly didn't comment on it, just smiling fondly at her girlfriend.

"Yes, well, it still needs decoration. Have Hawks or Dabi called you yet? We really need to be getting there before 5 if we want time for a movie marathon"

At that Miruko stopped smiling, leaning against the counter with a scowl. "No they haven't. Useless fucks"

"Miruko!"

"Sorry!" She said, holding up her hands in defence "You know I don't mean it love". Fuyumi swatted her nervously with a towel, as if afraid to speak aloud and discover she now swore every other word. The pair of them just leaned against the counter for a moment, the sweet smell of cake and icing contenting them as well as each other presence.

"You know what" Fuyumi said after a moment, standing up with a determined glint in her eyes "Let me try calling them"

Miruko raised an eyebrow, not wanting to shoot her down, but also a little put-out by the idea that they would answer fuyumi and not her. Dabi she could understand, the greasy little fucker, but hawks? He was her best friend, her vodka buddy. She wouldn't stand for this.

"Alright" She replied breezily, keeping her expression perfectly blank. Fuyumi gave her a mild look back, picking up the phone with a serene smile and scrolling through her contacts.

"You know" Miruko started casually a moment later, giving her girlfriend a smug look "I've already sent them 6 texts on the group-chat. And I called them five times - each"

"That's nice sweetheart" Fuyumi responded in an indulgent tone, looking entirely too self-confident. Yes a confident fuyumi was seriously hot, but Miruko was right. Hawks was her best friend, and he wouldn't pick up for yumi and not for her-

*click*

"Hey yumi! What's up?"

"Motherfucker!"

"Miruko!"

"Well that was a strange phone-call" Hawks told his boyfriend, who was now dutifully stringing up tinsel around their obnoxiously large tree. Hawks said it suited them just fine, dabi begged to disagree.

"What makes you say that birdie?" He asked, carefully untangling tinsel whilst trying not to knock over their tree.

"Just Miruko" He laughed, tossing his phone on the sofa and getting up to help Dabi, "She called me a motherfucker seven times in one phone call, and I'm pretty sure I heard the smoke alarm go off". Dabi hummed non-committally,, his hands starting to steam in frustration. He'd never realised how fucking hard it was to decorate an over-grown lump of leaves! Why the fuck was it all wonky?!

"Babe" Hawks chirped, nudging him lightly on the hip, "Hot stuff?". Dabi shoved the tinsel aggressively into a branch and turned to look down at his shorter boyfriend, who was smugly fluttering his wings for no apparent reason.

"Yeah birdie?"

"I was thinking" He started, ignoring dabi's mumbled side-comment about "how dangerous that was", because he knew one of them had to be mature, "you seem to be struggling a little with that. Why don't you go outside and shovel the driveway and I'll get the last few bits in here done?"

Dabi raised an eyebrow, doing that irritating, asshole look he seemed to pride himself on. "You sure you can still walk right after the railing I gave you just now?"

Hawks' face went a pleasant shade of red, but he still jibed back with a teasing, "You call that a railing hot stuff? All your cigarettes must be getting to your stamina". Dabi swatted him on the ass, and hawks yelped, giving him a good-natured shove back.

"I can't stand you, you fucking brat" He murmured, but shrugged on his coat anyway and headed out, stubbornly pressing a cigarette between his lips. "And, for your information, my stamina is just fine blondie" He huffed, lighting the cigarette with his finger. Hawks knew that shouldn't be hot, but the movement was so smooth, and the blue flames were transfixing, even if they were small. He couldn't help that he appreciated aesthetics.

"You stamina was just fine? I could hear you wheezing within the first five minutes" He told the man, who, fortunately, was inhaling his cigarette at the moment so couldn't shoot back a reply other than giving hawks the finger as he stalked out.

"You said you valued honesty in this relationship!" Hawks called to his retreating form, laughing when he heard dabi cuss him out from the door. "Love you!" He added on, just because he could. He had a boyfriend now, friends, and even a name, and sometimes the privilege just hit him full-force.

There was a moment of delay and he heard dabi clumsily putting his shoes on and fumbling with the keys before he responded with a much quieter, but no less sincere "love you too". Hawks smiled in spite of himself and got to work amending the truly ugly Christmas tree before him. He loved dabi, he really did, but he definitely wasn't dating him for his decorative abilities.

"I can't fucking stand that bird" Dabi cursed, shovelling furiously at the obstinate layer of snow clogging up their drive. He thought it was ridiculous that he was actually doing something as mundane as shovelling snow when, merely a year ago, he'd have been in some shitty hide-out, probably high out of his mind.

He hadn't decided whether or not his situation had improved, but the numbness in his fingers and toes made him want to say no. Pausing for a second, he considered just setting the snow on fire and melting it all in one go. It would save time, but he'd done it before and it had resulted in a mini-flood and one very pissed off boyfriend. Hawks had given him such an exasperated expression that it sparked some small emotion in him he believed others called "shame".

So it was now out of the question. He got back to shovelling.

"No one can say I'm not fucking dedicated" He thought with a scowl, tossing aside chunks of snow and ice with a little more aggression than was necessary. Shoto would have called him a "simp" or whatever the fuck else people used now, but considering how whipped he was for his little broccoli-looking boyfriend, dabi didn't care. Or was that kid dating the blonde one with the anger issues? He wasn't sure, and frankly he didn't think they were either.

"How's it going babe?" Came Hawks' cheery voice from the doorway and Dabi turned to see his boyfriend, dressed in a pair of red pajama shorts and a hideous Christmas jumper.

"You look like you're trying to impersonate wrapping paper birdie"

Hawks sniffed, banding his arms protectively around himself. "Well it's better than you, emo" He told his boyfriend, stomping out onto the partially shovelled drive. He didn't seem cold, even though he was wearing shorts. Dabi decided it would be in his best interest not to question it. He scuffed the wet concrete with his clumpy, oversized snow boots, as if assessing the dabi's shovelling technique. "This pretty good babe, you work fast" He marvelled, winking at his scowling boyfriend.

"Yeah, well, I'm freezing my ass off here sweetheart, so you better have a nice cup of coffee waiting for me inside" He told him, half-heartedly scraping at the last few patches of snow. Hawks screwed up his face at the word "inside", looking at Dabi like he'd lost his mind. Dabi didn't like what that entailed.

"Inside? Babe, look at the snow!"

"I can look at the snow through the window, inside" Dabi grumbled, trying to assert some sort of dominance into his tone as he firmly put the shovel down. "I've finished so I'm going to go wait in the perfectly warm, heated house we paid a shit-ton for, okay?" He said, taking off towards their door and not looking back. He was nearly through the doorway when he noticed hawks hadn't followed him and so paused, taking a glance back. Immediately, he felt a headache coming on. Maybe even a migraine.

"Birdie, what the fuck are you doing?" He asked, watching his perfectly grown, adult boyfriend prance around in the snow, eagerly gathering piles of the fine white power. Pressing them together, hawks made a sort of misshapen but firm lump and for a second dabi wanted to duck behind the safety of the door. He'd grown up with three little devils as a child - he knew exactly what a snowball looked like.

But hawks didn't stop there, instead gathering more and more lumps and carefully molding it into a...hill? It looked like a hill to dabi, just slightly flatter on the top as if hawks was planning to put stack something on. Staring at it, it took him an embarrassing amount of time to realise hawks is trying to make a snowman. In all fairness to him, he hadn't made a snowman since he was 7, and judging by the wobbly lumps keigo was creating, he hadn't made one ever.

"Can't ya just make a snow angel and call it a day?" Dabi shot at him, tone moody. For someone with a quirk that literally made fire at will, he knew he was complaining a lot about the cold, but he didn't care. Hawks didn't seem to care either, dutifully continuing to construct. The look of concentration on his face was actually kind of cute, his eyebrows all furrowed together, his full lips pursued...Well, whatever. He might as well help him out. Dabi didn't have anything better to do anyway.

Stomping over, he knelt down and started gathering snow, shocked by how quickly it crumpled apart. "It's- It's not fucking working birdie" He told his boyfriend, who just smiled at him, telling him in a matter-of-fact tone that he needed to apply pressure evenly. Dabi raised an eyebrow but followed the instructions nonetheless. The ball he made was pitiful, but hawks cooed at it and instantly added it the "second" section of their snowman.

"This is gonna be fucking amazing" He boasted, patting and smoothing the snow as dabi patiently handed him lumps "Way better than the one down the street".

"Isn't that the one those two toddlers made a couple days ago?" Dabi questioned, watching his boyfriend with concern.

"Oh yeah" Hawks responded without a lick of shame, looking scarily competitive "You should have seen the way their mum went on and on about it - as if it wasn't wonky! Anyway, ours is gonna be better" Keigo announced, sitting back on his calves to survey their work.

Dabi didn't quite know what to say to that, so he just handed his bird another snowball and told him to "knock himself out".

"Oh I will, don't you worry babe! This will be instagram-worthy - as soon as you fetch me a carrot". Hawks paused, cocking his head in a bird-like manner "And maybe some buttons. Perhaps a spatula". Dabi just gave him a look, slightly exasperated, but mostly fond. "Yeah alright birdie. I'm only doing this cos you decorated" He tacked on. Retired villain or not, he still had a reputation to keep.

"Whatever you say hot-stuff" Hawks chirped, completely focused on finishing their masterpiece.

Dabi wasn't really into Christmas and all of that shit, but even he had to admit the snowman looked pretty good. All it had taken was approximately 10 buttons, 2 carrots and strangely creative use of a spatula to achieve a damn good snowman.

Putting his hands on his hips, hawks was slightly flushed, and his legs were most definitely numb, but he looked very pleased with himself. "I'm so fucking talented" He hummed, swiftly plucking dabi's phone from his pocket and taking a few pictures. With each "click" of the camera, dabi felt his appreciation for the snowman slip away, wishing he had another cigarette. He could have sworn he'd taken his pack out with him, but hawks was surprisingly good at stealing, considering he was supposed to be a hero.

"Are you done?" He asked flatly after the 10th picture or so, this time taken from the weirdest angle dabi had ever seen. Hawks didn't bother to answer, but did straighten up, which dabi took as a silent "I'm finished" gesture.

"Fucking finally" he murmured, ignoring the way hawks, who had stood up and looped arms with him, gave him a sharp nudge for it.

"Don't lie and say our snowman isn't amazing" He said, tip-toeing up to give his scowling boyfriend a kiss on the cheek. It would have been sweet, if not for the way he stuck his freezing hand up dabi's shirt. "Fuck off keigo!!" He yelped, shoving him away and covering his stomach, partly annoyed and partly confused as to how he'd managed to do so with dabi's coat in the way.

Hawks just laughed, having stumbled a bit in the snow and promptly fallen on his ass. Dabi tried to glare at him, but he looked so stupid lying there in his red shorts that he found himself smirking instead.

"C'mon birdie, your legs are gonna turn blue if we don't get back inside soon" he murmured and with that he leaned over to yank his boyfriend to his feet. Unfortunately, an extremely cold, wet object collided with his exposed back at that exact moment and he lost his balance, shrieking as he fell forwards, right onto his poor, unsuspecting boyfriend.

It took Hawks a minute to register that dabi, rather than romantically sweeping him up, had fallen flat on his face in an attempt to break Hawks' ribs.

"Dabi!" He gasped, sounding like all the breath had been knocked out of him which, to be fair, it probably had, "What are you doing?! We can't fuck outside - this is a family-friendly neighbourhood!". At that dabi let out a strangled groan, trying to scramble to his feet and slipping pathetically on the ice.

"G-Get off!" Hawks yelped, his face turning steadily redder as dabi's weight flopped on his chest "You're crushing me dude!". Shoving at him, dabi seemed to stagger back a few inches then lose his balance, leading to him slipping forward again. They were a mess of thrashing limbs on the floor, red feathers flying everywhere.

"We're here motherfuckers!" Came a cackle from somewhere, and hawks could just about see two large rabbit ears from his unfortunate position underneath dabi.

"You fucking evil rabbit" Dabi spat, turning to face her and simultaneously hitting hawks in the face. Keigo spluttered, shoving at his boyfriend with an offended expression as Miruko roared with laughter.

"H-Hel, stop moving dabi, help us up!" Hawks yelped, narrowly avoiding an elbow to the nose. Miruko did not help them up. In fact, from hawks' angle, it looked like she was doubled over and cackling.

Hawks cursed at her, and dabi spat some very unfriendly greetings but miruko was not cowed. She was a lot of things, brave, blunt, fiercely caring, but she was not an easily-influenced woman. Hawks normally loved it, enjoyed listening to her take down gross reporters or handsy fans, but he was not feeling very fond at the moment.

"Miruko baby, have you knocked on the doo- what on earth?"

Oh fucking fantastic, Hawks thought woefully, more people to witness our humiliation. Even worse, he was certain he recognised the gentle tone, but he held on to hope. Maybe it wasn't Fuyumi, maybe it was another girl who had mysteriously joined Miruko and Fuyumi to form a polyamorous relationship.

"Please tell me I didn't walk on my brother trying to fuck hawks and that they've just fallen over"

Hawks let his head fall back so hard that if it had been concrete beneath them he might have given himself a concussion. As it was, he just caked his hair in a healthy layer of ice and snow.

He heard Miruko howling and fuyumi scolding her good-naturedly, but she seemed to be on the verge of laughter herself. Eventually dabi got tired of slipping on the ice and just laid there, flat, like a an extremely heavy, weighted blanket.

Sometimes Hawks wondered if Miruko really was his best friend.

“What you did outside was totally abuse” Hawks announced, barging miruko and dabi aside to squeeze himself onto the sofa. Dabi groaned and Miruko yelped, her slice of cake nearly dropping onto the floor.

‘Watch it you overgrown chicken!’ She snapped, slapping him on the arm with her free hand. Hawks, being mature, jabbed at her plate and Miruko let out a curse, hastily maneuvering it out of the way. ‘You’re a godamn menace’ she told him, angrily taking a bite of her cake. Hawks just chuckled, leaning back into the safety of his boyfriend’s arms. Despite his repeated claims of hating Christmas, he seemed completely transfixed by the sappy, feel-good, festive film they’d put on, having been following the plot for the past hour.

‘You’re a big softie’ Hawks told him, reaching down to get his own slice of cake and ruffling fuyumi’s hair as he did it, ‘And you’re an goddess ‘yumi’. Said goddess blushed, waving off the compliment about her cake. Nibbling on a slice, she had come to the conclusion that it needed more vanilla extract and Miruko had looked strangely embarrassed.

‘It tastes fine to me’ Dabi mumbled from his seat, eyes still fixed on the screen. Hawks raised an eyebrow, taking another large bite out his slice, smearing icing and crumbs all over his chin. Through a mouthful of cake, he told his boyfriend ‘that’s because you’re a barbarian’. Miruko snorted, but still looked a little more flushed than normal. ‘Of course, it was Miruko who forgot the vanilla extract though’ He continued and there was a strange choking sound and a scandalised gasp.

‘Miruko! Did you really?’ Fuyumi gasped, rounding on her girlfriend with wide eyes. Miruko swallowed, putting her plate down and meeting her eyes. Hawks, being a bastard, just chewed innocently, watching the scene contently in his boyfriend’s arms.

‘I…It was an accident babe. I didn’t forget it completely - I put a little bit in!’ She tacked on, looking genuinely apologetic. Fuyumi just stared, gaze completely blank and wounded. The atmosphere turned tense. Hawks reached nervously for another slice and even Dabi glanced away from the screen.

‘Look, I’m sorry baby, I’ll go and get us another cake right now-‘

Fuyumi dissolved into giggles, unable to control herself any longer. ‘Oh miruko, you should have seen your face’ she chortled, standing up and making her way to Miruko’s lap, who looked utterly stunned. ‘I’m not mad’ she reassured her, giving her a quick peck on the cheek.

Miruko’s ears twitched and she gave her girlfriend a dirty look, mumbling something under her breath that definitely wasn’t suitable for school-children. ‘Miruko! I have work next week, I don’t want to pick up any bad habits!’ Fuyumi whined, but there was no anger in her tone, just fond exasperation.

‘Well I have Christmas tomorrow and I don’t want to think my girlfriend mad at me, did you ever think about that?’ Miruko shot back with a huff, and fuyumi’s lips twitched as if struggling not to smile. Hawks had no such qualms, chuckling at his best friend’s annoyed expression. Miruko sent him a sharp look. ‘Need I remind you birdbrain, I still have a video of you and your boyfriend flopping around like fishes on the floor’ She announced and Dabi let out a weird, strangled noise, turning his fierce blue gaze on Miruko.

"I fucking told you to delete that!"

"Since when do I listen to you?" Miruko snorted, looking remarkably unthreatened. ‘Pass me a drink kei’ she told hawks, who had been staring weakly at her ever since the reminder about the video. Still, he got to his feet, peering at the mess of a table for something they could drink.

"We ain’t got nothin" he told her, flopping back onto dabi’s thigh with a world-weary sigh. Leaning forward, miruko fixed her best friend with a hard stare, looking unimpressed.

"What", she started hotly, tucking in a short strand of hair behind her ear, "Do you not have anything in your entire house? No champagne or mysterious bottles that could be alcohol or bleach?"

Hawks shoved a chip in his mouth, and shook his head, announcing that Dabi had well and truly finished their stack yesterday, having needed something to take his mind of wrapping presents. "You didn’t even wrap em' well" Miruko grumbled, staring at the pile under the Christmas tree with a scowl.

"We’ve got vodka in the car" Fuyumi suddenly announced, and dabi straightened up, no longer moping over Miruko and her threats. With a look of complete love, Miruko leaned forward and planted a kiss on her girlfriend’s head, pulling her tightly into her chest.

"Like I said", Hawks sighed happily, "A goddess". He’d already got to his feet, feathers fetching the car keys as he fumbled into a pair of sneakers - miruko's, judging by the gaudy design. Either way, they were a size too big and hawks was wobbling precariously. ‘I’ll be back in a sec!’ He said, proceeding to hobble out the door in his pyjamas.

‘That boy needs help’ Miruko announced, watching with a touch of concern as he stumbled out the doorway and completely missed the car door. Fuyumi just laughed, spotting the fond look on Dabi’s face and feeling a strange sort of satisfaction for him. Their whole situation was so bizarrely domestic that it made her want to cry sometimes, having never imagined this sort of life for them. Luckily, Hawks burst in a moment later, clutching two bottles of vodka and sporting a cheeky grin, pulling her out of thoughts.

‘Let’s do shots!’ He said with a giggle, but didn’t even have time to sit properly before dabi had snatched a bottle and popped it open. ‘Dabi!’ Hawks said ‘You gotta drink in moderation!’. Leaning forward, hawks meant to tug the bottle out his boyfriend’s hands only to lose the second. He whirled around to see Miruko clutching it, a dangerous smirk on her lips.

‘Why don’t we have a challenge?’, She asked sweetly, staring Dabi down with worrying intensity, ‘See who can finish the bottle first?’

‘I ain’t too worried about out-drinking a rabbit’ Dabi sneered, but he looked pretty nervous, no longer watching the Christmas movie. Hawks and Fuyumi were just watching their partners, mostly concerned, and slightly turned on by their fierce expressions.

‘This is a terrible idea’ Fuyumi started weakly, and hawks nodded his agreement. ‘Awful really’ he mused, but fuyumi was already turning down the volume on the TV. Pulling out his phone, hawks quickly pulled up stopwatch and leant back, wanting to issue one more warning.

‘Now guys, are you sure you wanna wake up hung-over-‘

Go!’ Fuyumi yelled suddenly, and hawks only had a second to press ‘start’ before the pair tipped their heads back and started drinking.
