The First Snow

Summary:

“You saw the first snow together?” San asks again.

“Well, yeah-” Yeosang stopped his sentence as he remembered. He looked back at Wooyoung only to see his head already turned towards him as a look of panic became evident in his features. Yeosang was probably mirroring the same face.

That’s when they both knew; that they definitely, royally messed up.

or, San believes that being under the first snow with someone you love will make them stay together for a long time. Wooyoung and Yeosang forgot that part and walked under the first snow without San.

a very very self-indulgent fic dedicated to my bias line as a lil gift for myself and to you!

Work Text:

It was a quiet morning one day in December and five months into their relationship when Yeosang was woken up by the doorbell. He knows Wooyoung sleeps too deep so hearing it will be impossible. He tries to hand comb his hair to get rid of the bed hair- he fails- but he still strudges his way to their front door, hasn't shaken off sleep in his body, and opens it.

Still out of his mind and was staring straight at their visitor for five whole seconds before he realised it was his boyfriend. He suddenly feels awake and registers the sun of a smile that San has.

"San?"

"Yeo, good morning!!"

His boyfriend was too enthusiastic for a morning- wait is it morning?

"What time is it?" Yeosang asks.

"It's ten am!" San answers.

Yeosang was about to ask why he would be here too early for a Sunday when San asked him a question.

"Is Wooyoung up?"

Yeosang lags for a second and hums before answering, "I don't think so," because it is Sunday and who wakes up that early on their day offs?

San pushes Yeosang inside, "You'll get cold, let's get inside," is what San says as he also invites himself in.

"Oh, I'll wake Wooyoung up and you don't really need to change, just wear your coat, we'll go down for a little bit," San was still pushing Yeosang until they reached his room. The latter was about to ask why but San was fast to go out and barge in the next room. He hears Wooyoung grunting- San must've jumped on him or something.

Yeosang stands still for a few seconds as he lets the situation sink in. It  was hard to function when everything was happening too fast and he didn't have the energy to match his boyfriend's at 10 am .

Meanwhile in the next room, San was pulling a whiny Wooyoung saying, "Can I have five more minutes?"

"No can do. We'll be fast, I promise!"

In the next few minutes, Wooyoung managed to stand up from his bed, standing still as San dressed him in a winter coat and still in pajamas underneath. It was also that moment that Yeosang went inside the room, also dressed in a winter coat.

"So? What are we doing, San?"

San looks at him and smiles mischievously, "It is a secret," and he giggles.

And it was already Yeosang's defeat- San smiling and giggling and the dimples - complete utter defeat, knock out. Wooyoung is too spaced out to notice but he could've had the same reaction.

Both Wooyoung and Yeosang kept quiet as San was pulling them outside their apartment, lightly skipping in his steps as they went in the elevator. Inside, both of them are quiet when their eyes meet and in a silent conversation as to why would their boyfriend act so happy and lively and energetic on a seemingly normal day but still no answer came to mind so they just shrug.

Upon reaching the ground floor, the elevator door opens and San rushes outside. Wooyoung and Yeosang were quick to follow.

"San!"

"San, wait!"

Both of them shouted as San pushed past the transparent entrance double door. They reached it a few seconds after but before they could even open it, the sight before them stunned them into moving.

It is snowing and San is twirling under it with his dimpled smile plastered on his face while his eyes turn into crescents. If this was a movie, everything would have happened in slow motion.

"Come here! It's the first snow!" San urges and Yeosang and Wooyoung were slow on the uptake, busy carving the moment into their memory just so they won't forget.

San’s giggles somehow made them refocus and they pushed out the door. San walks up to them and pulls, Yeosang and Wooyoung follow.

They stopped as they were under the snow but San still held their hands.

"It's the first snow today," San repeats.

"It is," Wooyoung rhetorically answers.

"I'm sorry for dragging the both of you this early but we can't miss this," San fidgets for a few seconds.

“Do you know?” San starts as he alternates his stares at both his boyfriend before he looks down.

Yeosang and Wooyoung wait, and when San stares back up again, his eyes giving off sincerity and genuineness, both know that they already believe whatever San was planning to say.

“Do you know?” San repeats, “That whoever you’re with on the first snow, you’ll stay with them for a very long time. I know our relationship is pretty much new and I can’t explain how I am so happy the day both of you accepted me in this relationship. But since then I know that I want this to last long, I want this for as long as you’ll have me.”

Yeosang and Wooyoung are quiet, letting the words sink in.

Their first thought? They really didn’t deserve San. This pure soul deserves everything, and if making themselves worthy of everything then they’ll risk it all for San.

“Oh, Sannie, you really didn’t have to do all this,” Yeosang starts as he pulls San into an embrace.

San hides his face in his boyfriend’s neck, “You don’t want me to stay with you for long?” The words are muffled but Yeosang understands it still.

“No, dummy, because it’s not ‘as long as you’ll have me’ it’s as long as our lifetime will allow or even forever if that’s actually true.” Yeosang answers.

“You don’t believe in forever?”

“No,” Yeosang chuckles as he detaches from his boyfriend.

Wooyoung then reaches for San’s hand and holds it.

“Don’t mind Yeo. He is just being too realistic.” Wooyoung counters.

“And what’s the problem with that?” Yeosang retorts.

“Yeo, it can’t always hurt to hope for the impossible. Have a little sense of childness and naivety. If I believe there are unicorns and treasures and candies at the end of the rainbow then I will. Being delusional isn’t entirely bad, you know. Whatever makes you happy.”

“Yeah, yeah, okay, Mr. Five-year-old in an old man’s body.”

“Hey, I’m not an old man!”

“Sure, and your back and knees just hurt yesterday,”

“Because that’s what happens when I’m literally a responsible dance instructor!”

San alternately turns his head for every counter his boyfriends throw at each other. So much for being mature, they’re both five-year-olds trapped in a 24-year-old body.

San laughs and that stops the two from bickering.

“Stop laughing, San. Tell Yeo I’m not an old man,”

“San is laughing at you because you’re ridiculous and he agrees with me. Right?”

San’s laugh just gets a little bit louder and he jumps at them, surprising them both but catches San, nevertheless.

San goes to peck both their lips and hugs them close after.

Yeosang and Wooyoung suddenly forgot the pettiness between them and just quietly smiled because everything about San is bright and sunshines and they bask in it.

The memory is pretty as they remember it. But the first snow for the following year didn’t quite meet the standard.

One bus ride later, Wooyoung reaches his neighborhood. He is walking down the familiar street when he sees a familiar figure.

“Yeosang!!” He screams as he runs up to him. Said man turned his head and was quite surprised but still ready to catch the boy and engulf him in a hug.

“Careful, Woo. The snow can be slippery,” Yeosang worriedly says as he caresses the boy’s hair as Wooyoung nuzzles his head into his boyfriend’s neck.

Wooyoung just hums, “You’re warm.” He says as he ignores Yeosang’s remarks.

Wooyoung then detaches himself to properly look at his boyfriend only to see his nose red. It was too cute that Wooyoung can’t stop himself to poke Yeosang’s nose.

“Why didn’t you bring a scarf?” It was now Wooyoung’s turn to nag as he uncurls his scarf from his neck and transfers it to Yeosang.

“Hey, you’re overreacting,” Yeosang nudges Wooyoung’s hands from the scarf as he makes it almost cover half his face.

“Am not when you’re the one whose nose is too red,” Wooyoung teases again as he pinches the other’s nose.

Yeosang grunts as he tries to wiggle away from the hold, “That hurts!” he exclaims as he lightly slaps his boyfriend’s arm.

Wooyoung just laughs.

Yeosang then noticed how Wooyoung’s hands don't have any mittens so he grabs his hands quietly and tucks both their hands in his coat’s pocket. They continue their walk to their house as he drags Wooyoung along. Yeosang knew how the latter gets his hand cold easily so Wooyoung greatly appreciated the gesture and they walked under the snow with comfortable silence- as Yeosang would’ve wanted but knowing Wooyoung, he can’t stop his mouth so he proceeded to listen to his boyfriend’s stories.

After a few more minutes of walking, they reached their apartment and called for San.

“San! We’re here!” Wooyoung shouts. Yeosang and Wooyoung were taking off their shoes and coats when they heard footsteps nearing them and after a few more seconds, they saw their boyfriend reach the front door.

“It’s the first snow!” San exclaims.

Wooyoung and Yeosang have always loved seeing San’s bright dimpled smile- but today, it was instantly wiped off his face when he saw them.

“You came together?” San asks.

“Yeah?” Wooyoung confusedly answers.

San said it was fine. San said it was a situation they didn’t expect just because they happened to meet outside; because they walk the same way; because they live in the same apartment.

But how fine is it when San’s pout never left his face since 30 minutes ago? It was like some kind of reminder that what they did was one of the deadly sins and their safety points already reached zero- maybe even threading the negatives- and they already earned the one-way ticket to meet the ruler of the underworld instead.

Wooyoung excuses himself, standing up from the couch from where they were watching the movie, silently signalling Yeosang to follow him.

A few seconds after Yeosang saw Wooyoung go into their kitchen, he says he needs to go to the bathroom, and leaves San (still pouting) on the couch.

“What do we do?” Wooyoung whispers when Yeosang reaches him in the kitchen.

“I don’t know? How are we supposed to tell him that the snow was fake and it’s a fragment of his imagination instead?”

Shit , Yeo, you are a genius, let’s go with that!”

“And you’re so stupid, how is he gonna believe that?!”

“You’re mean, I’m not stupid!”

“Yeah, when you just- no, can we please let’s focus on the issue at hand?”

“I was just being positive! And can’t you take sarcasm?!”

“Are you both fighting?”

“Yes!”

“No?!”

Yeosang and Wooyoung answered too fast that they were late to realize that it was San who asked the question.

They quickly turn their heads to San and they see their boyfriend’s eyebrows knit together in confusion.

“It’s nothing, San-ah,” Yeosang excuses with a crooked smile on his face.

San was just staring; Wooyoung and Yeosang are confused if he just didn’t have anything else to say or this is actually San’s way of scrutinizing them both- quiet and emotionless so they both wallow on the what ifs of why they shouldn’t have met earlier at the first snow. It wasn’t their fault but they’re really ready to take the blame.

“I can literally hear both of you thinking.” San utters after a few more awkward seconds of silence.

“Huh?” Yeosang, clearly befuddled.

“I’m really fine,” San admitted, “This is just so stupid of me anyway,” he adds.

“San, if you’re stupid then what do you call Yeosang?”

“Pardon?!” Yeosang quickly lashes.

Wooyoung and Yeosang are suddenly back at their petty argument and making faces and San chuckles at how endearing are the both of them.

They stop and Wooyoung sighs. He reaches for San’s hand, and he holds it.

“San,” he starts, “When I was younger I actually believed in the tooth fairy.”

San looks at him and he continues his story.

“My parents aren’t the type that brings their child to a dentist just so they could pluck out the loose baby teeth. My father uses a thread, wraps it around my tooth and pulls,” San’s face visibly crumbles at that.

“That sounds scary,” San comments.

“Exactly. So what my mother did, she told me that if I got that tooth out by ourselves then there’s a higher chance that the tooth fairy will get it and give me a present. I just had to put it under my pillow.”

“Did you believe it?” Yeosang asks.

“Of course! I was a kid and innocent,” Wooyoung reasons.

“See, San? That’s what you call as being stupid,” Yeosang definitely didn’t let the opportunity to pass on teasing Wooyoung.

Wooyoung glares and hits him in the arm; but San smiled so it was all worth it.

“Ignoring Yeo,” Wooyoung glares again at his direction to which Yeosang just sticks his tongue out. He looks back at San and says, “Believing in some kind of myth or whatever lore, is harmless. It is made on a good intention so why is it stupid? Reality can be tiring sometimes, and a little bit of magic can’t hurt, does it?”

San smiles wider and Wooyoung mirrors it.

Yeosang also holds San’s hand.

“And first snow or not, you really can’t get rid of us now, Sannie.” And Yeosang winks to which San giggles.

Yeosang then looks at Wooyoung.

“That was a good speech. I guess your dumbness turned down a notch,” Yeosang teases.

“Yeosang, kindly shut the fuck up.”

; ; ;

“Does covering my eyes really matter?” San asks as Wooyoung uses his hand to cover his eyes and Yeosang drags them to somewhere San didn’t have an idea of.

“A li’l bit more, Sannie,” He hears Wooyoung say.

Then they stopped. And Wooyoung removes his hand that covers San’s eyes.

San was brought to a skating rink.

“A skating rink?”

“Yes! My friend’s family owns it and I got the whole rink reserved for us!” Wooyoung excitedly explains.

“But we don’t know how to ice skate,” San states.

“Yeah, and that’s the fun part! We can just learn together,” Wooyoung says everything in a big smile and who was San and Yeosang to turn him down?

“Hey, this was supposed to be a surprise for San and we teach him and we get all sweet and romantic, holding hands and catching him when he falls. But why is he already this good at skating?” Wooyoung asks Yeosang as they both look at San skating freely like this isn’t his first time.

“I don’t really know, Woo. Did he perhaps lie to us?”

“Hm, negative. He didn’t even know how to properly wear the skating shoes. He couldn’t have done this before,”

“So why?”

“I really have no idea.”

“Why aren’t both of you skating?” San asks when he stopped in front of his confused boyfriends.

“We are. Wooyoung is just too scared of continuing now.” Yeosang bluffs.

“I’m not?!”

“Then let’s go,” Yeosang says as he pulls Wooyoung along.

But Wooyoung wasn’t ready so he stumbled for a little bit and fell.

“See? He just isn’t cut out for ice skating,” Yeosang turns to San as he points to Wooyoung who had his butt slap the cold ice floor.

“You suddenly pulled me, I wasn’t ready!” Wooyoung excuses, “Help me up!”

Yeosang obliged but Wooyoung, already conducted a revenge plan in his mind, pulled Yeosang down.

Now, they’re slumped on the cold ice floor while San was just laughing at both of his boyfriends’ antics.

“Seriously, why would you do that? The skating instructor said that if you fall, you fall alone!” Yeosang complains as they stand up.

“Whatever! And getting a skating instructor is stupid, anyway! San is already this good- we can’t be cute and lovely with him now!”

“And so? Why do you sound like this is my fault!?”

“Okay, okay. I need everyone to calm down. And can we backtrack? Skating instructor? You both learned to skate?” San asks.

Wooyoung and Yeosang just looked at San like they were deers caught in a headlight. Yeosang opens his mouth to speak, but hesitates while Wooyoung stutters.

“You both learned without me?” San asks again.

“Let us explain!” Wooyoung rushes to say.

“Yes, San, listen. It was all done with good intentions, we didn’t purposely leave you out!” Now that Yeosang has stated it like that, the more that it sounded wrong in San’s ears.

Yeosang realized that as San maintained a straight face. Wooyoung just nudged him to continue, to be honest just so they wouldn’t mess anything more up.

“So, remember the first snow incident?” Yeosang asks to which San nods. It happened a few days ago and San has always waited for the first snow so how can he forget?

“We do want to do something. We felt really bad, you know?”

“But it wasn’t really your fault, I thought we-”

Yeosang stops San before he can say anything more.

“We know. We know . But still.”

Yeosang looks at Wooyoung to signal that it’s now his turn to explain.

“So I just got the idea of ice skating together. Me and Yeosang will learn it first then we teach you and we will be cute and sweet and just lovely boyfriends that cares and tends for their boyfriend.”

San stares at them, no emotions can be read at his face. Wooyoung and Yeosang didn’t know if San was upset or not but the silence was getting on their nerves.

Wooyoung was about to apologize when suddenly, a chuckle was heard; turned to boisterous laughs from San.

San approaches them both and proceeds to hug his boyfriends by their neck.

“I’m so so lucky to have both of you!” San exclaims.

Then suddenly, artificial snow falls inside the skating rink.

San notices it and breaks the hug to properly look at his surroundings.

“Is this part of your romantic agenda too?”

Wooyoung and Yeosang nod.

San smiles. Then he approaches Yeosang and kisses him on his cheek. The same was done with Wooyoung.

After their little moment, dumb smiles were found on each of their faces. Memories of their first snow last year lingers on their mind and everything feels magical again.

Wooyoung then intertwines his hand with San's right, and Yeosang on the left. Both of them on each side of San and simultaneously kissed San on his cheeks.

San is taken by surprise but he giggles through it. Wooyoung and Yeosang loved every moment.

And the three of them just knew- that they would definitely stay together for a long long time.
