Another quiet afternoon at Team Dark’s apartment. A lavish living space that was right above Club Rouge; as the club’s name suggests, is owned by Rouge. Omega was back at G.U.N. headquarters getting his monthly updates while Rouge and Shadow were in the latter’s room hanging out as best friends do. The bat carefully worked on her manicure while lying on his bed on her stomach. The agent appeared to be getting ready to go out for the rest of the day.
“You have plans tonight?” Rouge’s voice perks up, breaking the comfortable silence.
As he irons his jacket, he hums. “I do. In an hour or so, Sonic and I are going out for dinner.”
“Ooh~ just dinner?” She glances up at him and smiles knowingly. Shadow shoots her a look.
“Yes, just dinner. Maybe a run beforehand. We’ll decide on the way.”
"Sure, whatever you say Sunshine." Rouge rolls her eyes and starts tidying up her nail stuff. Shadow simply huffs in response.
"So when are you planning to -" Just as Rouge was about to ask a critical question, Shadow’s phone rings, interrupting her.
The agent raises a brow. Setting down his iron, he picks up his phone. “Sonic?” he answers it. “Hey.”
On the other end an abnormally weak and raspy voice spoke, “Heyyyy Shads! I… uh, I gotta cancel-” a cough. “-our date. Maybe next time?”
“Are you ill?” worry laced Shadow’s tone as he questioned his boyfriend.
“Somethin’ like that! Just sorta came out of nowhere!” Another cough from the azure. “Sorry, Shads!”
“Don’t worry about it. Just get some rest, hm? I love you.” Shadow said sweetly before hanging up. A thoughtful expression crosses his face.
“What’s wrong?” Rouge questioned.
“Change of plans.” He answered simply.
Sonic is sick, huh? Well, this is the perfect chance for Shadow to play perfect husband material. He was getting the evening he was promised, whether it was just spending it indoors. He’ll make sure his boyfriend makes a speedy recovery.
With that goal in mind, Shadow left his room, leaving Rouge in confusion. “Oh, and get off my bed. I just changed the sheets.” He said from the hall. She huffs out a ‘rude’ under her breath.

Sonic lay in his bed, suffering. He never liked being sick, heck he didn’t even know WHAT got him sick! All of a sudden he started feeling like shit when he woke up that morning, then it just got worse. He was about to straight-up ignore it but his brother convinced him to stay home and break the news to Shadow. Gosh, he hated having to bail on dates like that. First, it was Eggman who would get in the way, next came Shadow’s G.U.N. missions overseas, now this. Perfect.
He threw his phone to the side after Shadow hung up and curled up under the blankets. He began to close his eyes and go back to sleep. Despite it being 4:30 in the afternoon.
A distant door opening and shutting woke him up. As well as the muffled talking. Groggily he sits up… ‘Who’s here?’ he wondered, starting to slip out of the comforts of his bed. He glanced at the clock real quick, it was 5:45. Huh…
Sonic drapes the comforter around himself and carefully stalks towards his door, opening it and stepping out to hear the conversation. Peering over the railing, he was able to also get a look downstairs without getting caught.
“Hey, Shadow! What brings you here?” Tails asked cheerfully, “If you’re here for Sonic, he’s not feeling too well. And currently asleep.”
“I’m aware.” He responded, “It’s just a cold, correct?”
The kit nods, “Yeah, dunno where it came from but thankfully it’s just the common cold.”
Ah… they’re talking about him. Naturally. Wait- why IS Shadow here? And what’s in that bag he’s carrying?
Shadow begins to slip off his shoes, placing them to the side. “I’ll watch him. You must be busy with your agenda; specifically, one that includes Cream, if I’m not mistaken.” He said, smirking at the kit.
Tails blush and chuckle nervously, “Well, I did sort of promise Cream I would take her around the city on the Tornado… but that’s ok. You don’t have to stay here-”
“That’s what I thought. You go take Cream on a sightseeing trip, I’ll look after Sonic. Can’t keep a girl waiting too long, hm?” The agent said, placing the bag he had brought down on the table.
“Gosh, thanks Shadow! How long will you be staying though?”
“However long Sonic wants me to stay.”
“Ok! Yeah, that works just fine. I’ll check up on you guys when I get back, all right?” Shadow nods. “It means a lot-”
A sudden sneeze interrupts Tails’ appreciation and gets both of them to look up at the top of the staircase. ‘Whoops…!’ Sonic thought to himself, smiling at the two apologetically.
“Sonic! You’re awake!” Tails greeted him. Sonic waved from under the comforter.
“What do you think you’re doing out of bed?” Shadow followed that up. He just smiles sheepishly as Tails chuckles.
“Hey, so, I’ll be heading out! Shadow’s going to take look after you, ok?” The azure nods. “Awesome! Thanks so much, Shadow, but I gotta get going now!”
“Have fun,” Shadow said, and the two watched the twin-tailed fox leave the house in a hurry.
The agent turns his attention back to Sonic, “Get your ass back to bed!” he playfully scolded.
“Or what-?” Sonic smirked after a cough and started to back up into his room. Shadow starts climbing the stairs up to him.
“Do you not want to recover quickly?” Shadow asked, following the azure into his room.
He shrugs, “Eh, if it means you’ll stay longer to look after me, then… no.” Cheeky little shit.
The sable hedgehog shakes his head and sighs as he gently pushes Sonic onto the bed and tucks him in. Then sits down next to him. “It’s remarkable how you still have the energy to crack jokes.”
Sonic chuckles–which was just a wheeze, “That’s how I am.” the other just hums and places a gloveless hand on Sonic’s forehead as the other hand reached over to hold the boy’s hand.
“Quite toasty today, are we?” Shadow stated as Sonic smiled some more. “Has Miles already given you medicine?”
The hero nods, “Hey… so, what made you decide to check on me?” he asked.
“Well because of two things. First, I was promised an evening with you, was I not?” Sonic giggles. “And second, I was worried. I wanted to make sure you felt better soon. So, I came prepared, brought you some soup and a few other things to help. ”
“That’s very sweet of you, Shads.” The sable hums in response as he sits down on the bed.
“Of course, anything for you.” He whispered lovingly and leaned down to plant a soft kiss on his love’s forehead.
“Ah- careful, I don’t want you getting sick too.” Sonic murmurs. Shadow gently caressed Sonic’s face.
“I don’t get sick, Sonic.” The azure looked up at him with a cheeky smile. That’s right, Shadow’s the Ultimate Lifeform; of course, he doesn’t get sick.
“Oh yeah, I almost forgot.” Shadow smiles at that. He squeezes Sonic’s hand before reluctantly letting go and standing up.
“You should rest for now. I’ll be nearby, all right?” He says, getting ready to walk out of the azure’s room.
“Wait,” Sonic stops him, “Since you can’t get sick–fricken lucky–um could you maybe sleep… with me?”
Shadow snorts at the little passive-aggressiveness, but sighs and softly replies, “Of course, I will.”
He climbs back into bed, this time under the covers. Sonic cuddles up to his boyfriend and sighs in contentment.
“Thanks, Shads.” He whispered, slowly slipping into dreams. Shadow smiles and holds the other close, placing a kiss on his head.
