Summary
They always come and get him, no matter how tired he is, no matter how long it takes to rouse him. He understands, and never begrudges them for it. The Plants are important, and Vash is an important part of fixing them.
But sometimes, treacherously, he wishes they would try to handle the problem on their own, that they would let him sleep.
Healing a Plant, for Vash, means taking its pain away. But that pain has to go somewhere, and he is the only Plant who is able to take it.

Summary
“Wolfwood,” Vash whispers. He shakes his head without taking his gaze off of Andy, who’s dropped his head. “It’s fine.”
Wolfwood shuts his mouth, though he doesn’t look happy about it. Vash isn’t sure he could ask for that anyway. When Vash rises to his feet, Andy lifts his face again, tears streaming off his cheeks. He’s grimacing, bared lips and clenched teeth, and for all the fury in his expression, it’s obvious what he’s feeling first and foremost is the pain.
Even if it wasn’t obvious, Vash knows exactly how he feels—has suffered through the same emotion every day for the past one hundred and fifty years, so he’d be able to identify it regardless.
“You killed my mom,” Andy whispers.
---
Vash and Wolfwood get involved in a feud that has nothing to do with them, as they always do. Lives are saved, but not all of them, and a child ends up orphaned, leaving Vash grappling with both his guilt and the remembered grief of when it happened to him.

Summary
Vash is practically listless in the sidecar by the time Wolfwood pulls up in front of an inn. Wolfwood’s eyes narrow as he sizes up his companion, lips puckering, but Vash doesn’t even stir. Nor does he stir when Wolfwood disappears into the building to book them a room, or even when Wolfwood gets back, still in the exact same position as he was before as Wolfwood walks up to him.
Brow creasing, Wolfwood reaches for his shoulder to shake him awake, but the moment Wolfwood’s fingers graze Vash’s neck—
“Shit,” Wolfwood hisses, yanking his hand back. “Tongari, you’re burning up.”
Vash barely reacts to the information, his eyelids fluttering. He gives a faint groan by way of response, after a moment, and Wolfwood lets out another curse. He had to have been feeling this all long; that he’s so out of it can only mean that it’s gotten so bad that he can no longer hide it. Fucking moron. And what is there for Wolfwood to do about it now?
---
Vash comes down with a bug just weeks out from their final destination.
