Work Text:
The sun was beaming. It’s red and orange hues filling up the sky, creating a beautiful scenery of the sun getting ready to rest for the night.
You look over to your right, eyeing a young girl and her baby brother running through the sand, the light wind blowing through their hair as they run. As you look closer, you could see the bright smiles of these two young children shine as the day gets darker. The young girl was pulling her big sun hat (might be a bit too big for her) over her head as she ran. She must’ve been trying so hard not to lose it.
“You can’t catch me!” The girl laughed.
Her baby brother must’ve felt a bit butthurt by those words, as he started running a bit faster than before. But not long after, he trips over a small pebble in the sand, and falls face flat.
He starts to cry.
You could hear his loud cries, even though you were just a few yards away from them. It reminded you of when you dropped your favorite blanket into the mud. That wasn’t very fun.
You wailed all the way home even though your guardians already told you that they were going to wash it, and it’ll be as good as new. But even then, the fact that the mud was still dripping from your precious sheet still didn’t convince you.
The young girl saw what happened to her sibling and ran straight over, still pulling the hat down to her face. She grabbed the space under his armpits and lifted him up from the ground. Carrying him over to where is said to be where they placed all their stuff.
The mother looked at the girl in shock as she asked, “What happened?”
“He fell,” The girl simply stated.
The mother grabs a handkerchief from her purse and wipes the sand off the boy’s face. She then gave him a small hug and a toy truck to comfort him.
“Why don’t we just make sandcastles instead?” The mother insisted. “Here, I’ll show you how to make one.”
She grabs a small red bucket, scoops up some sand and in quick motion, flips it over and gives the bucket a few pats before lifting the bucket up.
“Ta-da!” The mother exclaimed. “A sandcastle!”
The girl and the boy’s faces lit up. They must’ve thought that that was the coolest thing ever. One-by-one they start trying to make sandcastles of their own, adding their own little touches to it. The girl has made a little river surrounding her castle, while the boy smashed his toy dump truck over his. He probably thought that that was a great idea.
The girl looked at her brother’s creation in disgust. She probably thought about how he just ruined his own castle. The mother, however, chuckles a bit and gives the youngling a thumbs up.
You suddenly realized that you’ve been staring at them for quite some time now. You snap back into your own reality. Looking back down at the sand under your toes, you think to yourself, “I miss those days.”
With a frown, you start picking up the sand with both hands, and then separating them to let the sand fall back down to where it was picked up from. It looked just like the dripping mud from your favorite blanket, except quicker with almost little to no leftovers.
You look back up to the sky, just noticing that the sun has now set, and is now resting for the next day. All you see now is a pitch black canvas, but with splatters of white all over. In the midst of the canvas was the biggest splatter of all. The splat called the moon. So big and bright. Bigger than all the other splats on the canvas. But suddenly, a white streak started to form in the work of art. It was so different from the other splats, but it was so beautiful at the same time. The streak ran across the sky, but then faded out after a short period of time. Just like the mud dripping from your favorite blanket. Except it placed a huge smile on your face.
