Work Text:
Monty was trying to make heads or tails where the daycare theme started and where it ended, it was just a tireless loop with no beginning, no end. As he realized the part he’d familiarized repeated itself he almost groaned in frustration, “How aren’t you sick of this?”
“Pardon?” His parallel play partner, as Sun so quickly called it, looked up from what he was doing to give Monty it’s full attention. Monty spared a glance down to see a whole new drawing on a whole new piece of paper and wondered how long for a moment he was really trying to figure out the melody-Ah, yes, the music.
“The music. You know this song on repeat you got in here, doesn’t it annoy you?” Monty gruffly set the conversation back on track.
To which Sun just tilted it’s head, “Why would you think that?”
Monty bellowed before continuing, “It plays 24/7.” No reaction, “You’re in here, 24/7.”
“Well! Isn’t that the point? Don’t you have music playing all around the pizzaplex?” It harmlessly shot back.
“That’s different,” Monty nearly growled back annoyed, “It’s different music everywhere you go, even I’d get sick of the golf course’s tracks before wandering around for something else. Even then, the golf course plays whatever I want it to play.”
Sun tapped it’s chin in consideration before perking up, “Maybe I’m programmed to like it! I know I don’t like quiet! It’s background noise!”
“Background noise?” Monty deadpanned.
“Of course! I have the capability to turn it off whenever I want, but I don’t really like nothing playing,” Sun explained.
“What about when the brats-?” Monty almost flinched when Sun crossed it’s arms, it may have no ability to change it’s facial features but it was terrifyingly expressive in other ways even if it depended on body language and Monty wasn’t that dense to not notice it, “Hrm, kids, when the kids go to sleep?”
“Well!” It was back to peppy, “We originally didn’t have any tracks but I begged and pleaded, and maybe rallied the kids on my side, for some naptime music! It’s a looped song too, but something more of a backdrop to a lullaby!” Monty must have looked curious because Sun continued, “It’s calming, melodic, and perfect for singing to-Well, can’t say that, the kids don’t really like-”
“You sing?”
“Hm? Oh! A little? I’m no Freddy, but I hum a tune or two! The kids. Don’t really, hah, like it much?” Sun seemed to be lost in thought and drooping a bit.
“Can’t be any worse than Chica, amirite?” Monty went to pat Sun’s back in encouragement only to knock it a bit too hard, jostling it out of thought.
“Oh! I wouldn’t know! I’ve never seen any of you guys’ shows!” Sun quickly responded back before patting it’s chin, “Say, Freddy sings and Chica originally did backup, Roxanne covers for her now, but what about you?”
Oh, that was an annoying question to ask, “I don’t do backup, well not like you think. I got a voice, but I’m the backup. Chica and Roxanne sing to boost up Freddy, I got all the hookups to replace Freddy if he ain’t there, and, well, Freddy’s always there…”
Monty was about to start stewing in that before Sun jumping in his face startled him backwards, “ Really?! I never would have guessed! Oh, the fans are gonna love to hear this-!” And just like that Sun froze upright and nervously slouched a bit before Monty squinted at it before realizing the glasses were hiding that.
“What do you mean by that?” He pressed.
Sun continued to twiddle it’s thumbs before shaking it’s head side to side like rearing up for something or talking to itself before all too quietly for it’s norm, “Well, you see… I may have… Special privileges. ”
Monty stared at it while it continued to make eye contact, “Go on.”
“Well, my little dewdrops are a curious bunch! I’m supposed to encourage and entertain that curiosity! I may have been programmed with a few things like being you guys’ biggest fan, but sometimes the kids don’t want to talk about any of you! Shocker really! I know I do!” And Sun finally excitedly looked over at Monty who continued to stare it down before it went back to that head motion of weighing options, “So, they may have given me a little internet privilege.”
Now that threw Monty off, “Huh?”
“Sometimes I have to look things up based on their questions very quickly! ‘Why is the sky blue?’, ‘Is glue really made from horses?’, ‘What Fortnite skin works for such and such map-?’”
“What’s Fortnite?”
“-So! I have access to the internet so I can search these things and answer some interesting questions! I can’t answer any no-no queries, but I do let parents know their child is curious-”
“What would count as a ‘no-no’ question?”
“-Anywho! You guys have a lot of fans you don’t know about!” Sun finally started closing up, “Lots of blogs and forums talking about you guys!… And, I may, you know, talk to fans about you guys.” Oh, he didn’t sound too good. Sun sighed, “It’s not easy leaving the daycare, especially with everything so dark after closing, so while I was your biggest fan, right under the same roof, I couldn’t really interact with any of you… I was programmed this way with no way to meet any of you I thought-Until you came here! None of the fans know anything about you Monty! Including me!”
“Wait, hold up, I thought you said you were programmed-?” Monty said a little dumbstruck.
“I was! I was programmed to know everything about the original band! Roxanne was a last minute change, sure, but they still had all her wonderful fun facts figured out to put into me! When you came around it was much too late to make any changes with me when I work a full time gig managing the tots and maintenance goes home at a certain time, but, well, staff can’t really figure you out anyways… That’s why I was so excited-” Sun practically speed crawled up to Monty who had to shuffle back a bit, “-When you visited me! To think! I was the lucky fan who got to know you! You have a ton of fans out there who can’t really interact with you like how I can, so, I’ve been sharing to them everything I learn about you guys, you, through you!” Sun put a finger over it’s unmoving mouth as if keeping quiet or a secret, “I’m like an inside source!” Before it broke into giggles.
Monty looked flabbergasted, and Sun paused worrying it said to much, before he started a bellow and had it break into a gravelly uproar of laughter, “ That’s what you were worried of? Telling me I had fans?”
“No!” Sun crossed it’s arms into an X and then flailed them about a bit, “I was worried you’d think I was-!…” And Sun fell sitting back a bit radiating a gloom, “Obsessive,” It almost whispered.
“Not gonna lie, you kind of are-” And Sun flinched, “-But in a good way, nice to know we got our number one fan around for an ego boost at any time that can also tell us everything our fans are talking about,” Monty shifted and threw an arm around Sun yanking it close and shaking it a bit for good fun, “Too bad I’m hogging you all to myself! Huh?”
“Oh! I don’t mind!” Sun said all too quickly and sitting as tensely upright as possible.
“...Huh?”
Sun feigned clearing it’s throat, “Well, I’m sure if you were all here I’d get too excited, one’s enough! And, well, I like that it’s you .” Monty blinked a couple of times, shades loosely down his snout he knew it saw, “I’m all of you guys’ fan, but I’d have to say when you know everything about everyone else there’s nothing interesting to learn! You’re a whole new playground to explore! And I like how I’m the only one who gets to know you like that, I suppose.”
“...You didn’t know me when I was just in charge of the golf course-”
“Oh, but I did!” Shaking Monty to his core, “The staff didn’t tell me anything about you let alone programmed me to know anything about you, but the kids! The kids talked about you! I was a fan of yours before you’d even joined the band! I even had the kids teach me how to play golf!” Sun said the last part all too giddily. It took Monty back a bit.
He finally leaned back and dropped back down to the cushioned floor and basked in the warm, all too bright, lights of the daycare, “To think,” he mumbled to himself, “My number one fan was a trip down the hall the whole time.” And Sun merely tilted it’s head in confusion as to why he didn’t know that already.
