Chapter Text
“Yes mom, I’ll make sure to do a practice run before my first day tomorrow.”
“Korra dear, you know you're not the, umm how do I say this...” Korra could hear the long intake of breath on the other side of the line before her mom continued, “you’re not the world’s best driver.”
Korra plopped on the bed holding the phone tightly in her right hand. With her other hand she started to pick at the small pieces of lint on her sweatpants. With a defeated sigh, she continued her conversation with her mother. “Ugh, as much as I hate to admit that I’m not great at something, I agree.” She conceded. “I’ll head out shortly to make sure I can make it there with no issues.”
“Thank you dear. Your father and I are really proud of you.” Korra could hear a man in Senna’s background provide a hearty ‘Yup!’ in agreement. “Heading to Republic City and now getting a job so quickly...we love you Korra.”
Unable to take any more unwarranted praise, Korra provided a quick ‘love you too’ and ended the conversation, placing the phone on the nightstand by the bed.
Now laying flat on the bed, staring at the ceiling Korra attempted to figure out how it was that she got herself in this position.
Getting into Republic City University and graduating within 4 years, is an impressive accomplishment for anyone, not to mention it happening to someone from a small town in Southern Water Tribe. But college is over and everyone is expecting so much - a successful job, a nice apartment, a plan. So let’s see. Nice apartment? It’s not the worst place. It’s got a decent view which almost makes up for the outdated appliances, mismatched paint job, and thin walls. A plan? Thinking about getting dinner with Bolin today, which kind of counts as a plan. A successful job? Well that one is in progress. Step 1, join the Non-Profit learning program at Future Industries. Step 2, work hard and make a difference. Step 3, provide parents something truly to be proud about.
With that final thought, Korra willed herself out of the bed and into the closet to get ready for her test drive and meet up with Bolin.
Korra wasn’t as terrible at driving as most people liked to think she was. Sure, cars honked at her and sent her a few gestures as they sped around her, but that was just because people in Republic City have limited patience and are always in a rush to get to their destination.
She was a few feet away from one of the Future Industries buildings when she slammed on the brake pedal. The burnt rubber smell immediately invaded her senses and her eyes went wide. Once the initial shock wore off, she squinted out the window to see what exactly she had avoided crashing into. In the middle of the road, there was a person kneeling over some kind of obstruction that was blocked by her current viewpoint.
How could someone be completely oblivious to the traffic around here? Especially with the way these other Republic City drivers drive, she thought. This person is so lucky it was me coming down this road.
Korra activated the compact car’s caution lights and started to walk towards the crazy person in the middle of the road. The stranger slowly turned towards her and Korra found herself unable to move. In front of her stood a woman with stunning emerald eyes and hair that landed perfectly against her shoulders in cascading waves. As she worked up the courage to continue walking to this dark haired beauty, she amended her previous thought.
I am so lucky it was me coming down this road.
