Chapter Text

Just like every other day, your parents had left for work and wouldn't be home for awhile. You were the oldest daughter with a younger sister whom you babysat basically all the time.

And today, your fridge was lacking ingredients.

"Well, looks like we're going to the market today, is that ok with you Hermanita?" She was barely going to be a year old so the question was completely rhetorical, she couldn't even talk yet.

You dressed her up in a nicer dress and tuck her into a makeshift blanket carrier on your front. Before you leave you grab some money, a basket and you're on your way.

Your sister is usually calm and quiet, since it is still early and she must be tired. It was always easier in the morning than the afternoon to look after her but she did get fussy when you would have to go out like this. Still, you couldn't just leave this baby alone at the house, that's a disaster waiting to happen.

The whole village is already bustling even when it's this early, everyone has a job to do to keep the community going and it's endearing. You wonder what you would do when you get older but alas you push that thought aside for now.
Instead you focus on buying fruits and vegetables and even some baby things you were running low on.

You watched the kiddos of the village run around having fun as they followed Mirabel around. Even your sister eyed them, it was cute.

As you made your way further into the village you noticed how much louder it got all around you. You frowned, knowing that your sister would start crying any second now. "Aye, no te llores Jazmine" you spoke in a hushed tone when she started to squirm in place.

Your pleading didn't work and the waterworks kicked in, tears rolling down your baby sisters cheeks and she got awfully loud. You sighed and walked over to a bench, placing your groceries down and rocking your sister in your arms.

"Yo do you need some help?" You looked up and came face to face with Camilo.

"Oh it's ok you really don't have too" you answered sheepishly, a bit embarrassed to run into him once again.

"Are you kidding?" He chuckled "it's what I do best, watch." He transformed into your mother and took your little sister into his arms, upon looking at his face she calmed down considerably.

"Oiga! Don't be giving your sister a hard time ok?" He clicked his tongue and shook his head dissaprovingly.

Your sister merely laughed and ended her crying. He turned back into himself and your sister could only watch in wonder, her mother just dissapeared! She giggled even more and tugged at his curly hair.

"Jazmine! Don't do that!" You scolded lightly, grabbing her by the waist, your hands accidentally going over Camilos. You freeze for a second and he bashfully takes his hands away. "Haha it's ok, I love children. Don't be afraid to ask me for help." He shrugged, shoving his hands into his pockets.

This was definitely not the first time Camilo has helped you out, he always helps everyone in encanto with crying children.
It was a bit embarrassing the first time, having to explain that no she's not your baby and no you're not a teen mom. He was very apologetic for assuming and very embarrassed as well.

"Actually... Do you need some help with your shopping?" He turned around before he left, a hopeful smile on his face as he waited for your answer.
You could never turn him down "yeah that would be nice, I'm almost finished anyways." He took your basket and you held onto your sister comfortably with both hands, going over to some colorful stalls.

Maybe you should buy Camilo a gift, the flowers were pretty but he literally had a cousin who could create them out of thin air... The food looked good too but his tia made food that could heal anything, it was really good too, you've eaten it before.

You looked around some more, your eyes landing on the perfect gift for him. It was a gold chained bracelet with El Mal de ojo on it. You picked it up and looked at the price, it was fairly reasonable so you bought it along with your other groceries while Camilo put everything in the basket for you.

"Oh let me walk you home too!" He quickly chimed in, not wanting to let you leave just yet.

"You really don't have to Camilo! I know you are very busy." You tried to grab your basket but he held on a little bit tighter.

"No no, I Insist. déjame acompañarte." His voice softened as he looked into your eyes pleadingly.

You blushed softly and nodded, letting him keep the basket in his grip. "alright alright, thank you Camilo."

You walk ahead of him, downhill and towards your home just across the bridge. You should make some small talk. "Uhm how's your little brother by the way?" Maybe you guys can talk about your younget siblings.

"Well actually, his birthday and gift ceremony will be next week. I hope I'll see you there?" He suggested, everyone in the village always attended the gift ceremonies but he wanted to see you there especially.

"Oh definitely! What does your brother like? I want to get him a good gift." You spoke to the Madrigals occasionally when you happened to see them around the village but you weren't close to any of them in particular.

"I mean he likes animals and candy, y'know little kid stuff." You nodded along in thought but then realized you were already home. The village was so big but so small at the same time.

"I guess this is the part where I go, it was nice seeing you today (Y/n)" he handed you your basket, while your sister was fast asleep in the blanket around your back.
He turned to leave but you reached out to grab his wrist.

"Espere, I want to give you this, as a way to say thanks." He stayed, watching as you dug your hand through your pocket. Then he saw the gold bracelet and his eyes widened.

"Woah are you sure? That looks, very nice." He was never gifted anything before as thanks, and this was you giving this to him.

"Si, I insist." You set the basket on the floor and held the bracelet out, waiting for him. He reaches his hand out towards you and lets you clip it on his wrist for him.

He gulped, his face growing red, he really liked you and this really meant a lot to him. "Gracias (Y/n)"

"It's the least I could do, maybe I'll see you tomorrow too. Have a good day Camilo." His heart skipped a beat, he swore, Dolores probably heard it too.
"Yes! Have a good day (Y/n), you know where to find me if you need me." He waved and quickly ran off, back towards the bustling market place and his home.

You noticed how hot it felt outside, all due to your nerves but you did it! You talked so freely with Camilo and even got him a nice gift which he seemed to enjoy.

You sweep your basket up from the ground and enter your home, putting your sister to sleep and putting things away.

As you took the last of the things out of the basket you noticed a shiny glint at the bottom. You held it up to your face and studied it, it was a beautiful silver necklace with a chameleon charm and a (f/c) gem.
Of course the answer was as clear as day, obvious as ever. The only logical answer was that Camilo bought it for you and snuck it in the basket as a surprise. But you refused to believe it, had he really?

You could definitely ask him about it tomorrow, but for now you let the necklace adorn your neck, you loved it.

Notes:

Should I add more parts? I'm unsure if this should be left as just a one shot.
