Work Text:
Peter is in the lift in the avengers' tower hopping from foot to foot, unable to hide his excitement.
He's wearing his spiderman suit as he has just finished on patrol.
He would have swung in but he has something very precious in his hands.
In his right hand is a large grey pet carrier, with a surprise for Mr Stark inside.
When the lift finally arrives on the floor Friday said Mr Stark is in, the avengers' common room.
However, he had not asked if there was anyone with Mr Stark in the common room.
---
Most of the avengers are sitting in the common room together.
Clint and Sam are sitting on the floor, playing Mario kart together, Clint is in the lead and Sam is not very happy about it, which is evident in the language he is using, ignoring Cap’s disappointed stare every time he does.
Bucky and Steve are sharing a couch. Bucky is reading a book, he’s been trying to catch up on modern literature.
Steve is watching the game, he still doesn't understand how to play but he enjoys watching.
Tony and Rhodey are sharing one of the other couches, Tony is talking animatedly about ideas for Rhodey's suit that will help with his mobility issues.
Rhodey is just nodding along, struggling to keep up with the speed of the (one-sided) conversation.
'Tony must have gotten used to talking at this speed because of all the time he's been spending with Peter' he thinks fondly.
Wanda and vision left to go out on a walk a while ago.
And Natasha is sitting on the floor with her back against the couch Steve and Bucky are sitting on, observing the scene and silently judging everyone.
This is the most relaxed the team have been around each other since before the whole media-proclaimed ‘civil war’ and they are cherishing every moment of it.
---
The avengers all turn their heads when the lift dings.
They all slightly tense up and prepare for a threat.
Instead, coming face-to-face with a giddy Spider-man. When he spots them he pauses for a second, then shakes his head and turns to Mr Stark, the giddiness returning.
“Hi!” he says, bounding from one foot to another again, the same chirpy excited tone the avengers recognize from Germany.
It puts them at ease immediately, even though the last time most of them had seen him at the airport, his relaxed nature was comforting.
“Hi underoos,” Tony says smiling up at him, one of his rare genuine smiles, most (except rhodey) were surprised by this.
The majority of the avengers have only gotten a few smiles like that from the billionaire in the years some of them have known him.
Yet, a random vigilante gets one for showing up at his tower unannounced.
The avengers had all assumed that Tony did not contact the vigilante regularly because whenever they asked about him he would give vague answers and quickly change the subject, but they were clearly wrong.
---
Tony's attention is drawn to the carrier when it makes a sound suspiciously similar to a meow.
“What have you got there, kid?”
“Well, I was on patrol when I heard a noise from an alley, so obviously I went to see what it was. When I got down there I saw this group of people loading animals into a truck. There's been a problem with pet smuggling lately. I stopped them and luckily most of them were microchipped, except these lot.” he took a deep breath after finishing his ramble, gesturing to the carrier.
“Yeah, but why would you bring them up here?” Mr Stark asked.
By now all of the avengers' full attention was on the young vigilante.
“Normally when I find injured strays on patrol I take them to Miss Cho. These ones weren't injured, I just wanted to make sure they were healthy and, I wanted to show you one of them.”
Spidey giggled and opened up the door to the carrier, taking out a small kitten.
It was brown all over except for a circle of black fur around its muzzle and a small white patch on the center of its chest.
Spidey shut the door of the carrier and handed the small kitten to Mr Stark.
He giggled again. “He looks like you, so I was wondering if you wanted him”
Rhodey took one look at the cat and chuckled. “He’s not wrong,” he reached over to pet the cat, who leaned into his touch immediately. "he has the facial hair and the arc reactor, though he lacks the attitude."
"Wow, first of all, rude.
Second, why would I want a cat?” Mr Stark asked, trying to pretend he wasn't already in love with the bundle of fluff in his arms.
“Well, if you don't want him, can you at least hold him while I check on the others.”
Peter said, knowing full well that Mr Stark would not give up that cat by the time he's done checking on the others.
---
Peter takes the carrier over to the carpet and opens the small door. He is surprised when all of the tiny animals come sprinting out all at once. Another cat, a bunny, and a puppy.
The cat was white with bright blue eyes and a big fluffy tail.
It waddled over to Bucky and pawed at the bottom of his legs, expecting to be picked up.
Bucky seemed reluctant to do so, scared of hurting the fragile little creature.
Peter, saw this and walked over. He scooped up the cat and sat next to Bucky, he cradled the tiny cat in his arms.
Bucky just stared at the cat as it stared back at him,
Peter saw this out of the corner of his eye and turned to Bucky. “Do you want to hold her?” he asked while trying to stop the cat from squirming out of his arms and pouncing on bucky.
Bucky looked conflicted but after a second he nodded.
Peter smiled under the mask. “Just copy what I’m doing '' Bucky listened, copying the position of Peter's arms with a concentrated expression on his face.
Peter had to suppress a giggle at his expression.
Peter smiled and handed the small kitten to him.
Bucky stared down at the kitten with a wistful look.
He shifted the cat onto one arm and used his metal one to gently tickle the cat's fluffy belly.
The kitten immediately began purring, enjoying the feel of the cool metal hand.
He smiled and laughed as the cat playfully pushed at his arm, tears pricking in his eyes, not used to this level of joy.
Steve looked over and smiled at the sight, that's one of the first times he's seen his bucky since the ’40s.
---
The little back bunny hops over to Natasha and Clint, settling between Nat’s legs happily and leaning into Nat's touch happily when she scratches behind its floppy ears.
And tapping his leg when Clint gently scratched behind its ears.
Nat smiles down at her, already thinking of names for her bunny.
She's keeping her bunny whether Tony allows it or not.
Though he wouldn't likely object, having an angry black widow is far worse than having a tiny bunny running around.
Looking over at Tony she smirks ‘I don't think the no pets rule applies anymore, anyway.’ she thinks.
----
The puppy clumsily ran over to Steve and Sam, tripping over his feet and landing on his face in the process.
It quickly jumped up and continued running over to the two, its tail wagging excitedly.
The puppy was a little brown and white collie, she had dark brown eyes and some darker brown patches on her long silky coat.
She ran between the two energetically, enjoying the attention she's receiving.
Eventually, she flopped down and allowed them to pet her as she wriggled around and playfully nibbled at their sleeves when they got too close.
---
Peter stood up and walked over to Mr Stark.
He smiled under the mask as he saw Mr Start chuckling as the cat smacked the arc reactor through his shirt, fixated by the lights
Rhodey ticked under the cat's chin making him purr happily.
“Well, I guess if you don't want the cat I'll have to take him back,” Peter said, jokingly reaching for the tiny kitten.
Tony lightly smacked his hand away “take my cat and I'm taking your suit.” Tony replied only half-joking, not taking his eyes off of the kitten for a second.
---
Peter laughs and walks toward the window, opening it.
“Well, finding a home for them was easy,” he said to himself.
He climbed out and jumped down.
“HOLY SHIT!!”
“IS HE OK!?”
All of the avengers rushed to the window and stared down.
They are all concerned for Spider-man until they see a familiar red and blue suit flying through the air, waving goodbye as he flips and twists in the air.
“That little shit, I have a heart condition.”
