It was common knowledge that Daichi's birthday was today. His friends knew, his family, heck even the old lady at the local grocery store knew.
But it was perhaps most important to one Sugawara Kōshi.
So Daichi can't say that he was entirely surprised when Suga's face was the first he saw when he woke up. He groaned, sitting up and rubbing his eyes. "What are you doing here, Suga?"
"Isn't it obvious? I'm here to wish you a happy birthday!"
Daichi chuckled, his voice still deep from grogginess. "But you already did. At midnight."
"Well, yeah. But it doesn't count unless it's face to face."
The logic of his boyfriend baffled him sometimes. Daichi yawned, checking the time. "How'd you even get in here? It's eight thirty."
"Your mom let me in!"
He could've sworn he heard chuckling from downstairs. If there was one commonality in the Sawamura household, it was that all of them absolutely adored Suga.
"Now go brush your teeth because I wanna give you a birthday kiss but you have morning breath."
Daichi mumbled something about him being absolutely unbelievable before he gave the silverette a huff just to hear him squeak about morning breath before he went to the bathroom.
"You didn't have to do all this."
Suga looked up from when he was sitting on the ground with the other Sawamura children. He stood, running up to the younger teen before nearly tackling him in a hug.
Daichi laughed, wrapping his arms around Suga's waist. "Now, where's my birthday kiss?"
Suga giggled, kissing the corner of his mouth. "You turn eighteen and suddenly you get all greedy…"
"Not in front of your siblings, Daichi."
Both boys pretended to be embarrassed before sitting at the table after his mother called them all in. Daichi's siblings then proceeded to fight over who was going to sit next to Suga and himself.
His mom ignored their bickering. "Haru suggested eighteen pancakes for your eighteenth birthday, but I figured you wouldn't want that many so I made you two."
"Two is perfect. Thanks, Mom." He kissed her cheek before sitting down, Haru not far behind him. He smiled, ruffling the six year old's hair. "And thank you for the idea."
"Dai nii-san?" His youngest sibling, Naoko, asked from beside Sugawara. She was currently trying to entertain the silverette with something, and he was playing along surprisingly well. "Are you gonna marry Suga nii-san one day?"
Both teenagers stopped whatever they were doing, simultaneously turning red. "Married?" Daichi asked, scratching the back of his head. "Don't you think marriage is a little far-"
"He's blushing!" Naoko squealed, playfully hitting Suga's arm. "He does wanna marry you, nii-san!"
"That's…wait, what'd you call me?"
"Nii-san? You're like a second Dai nii-san!"
"A…second Daichi?" Suga looked at the teen in question before turning back to the second youngest Sawamura.
"Yeah! When you and onii-san get married, I'll have two big brothers! Well, really big…I guess I already have Haru nii-san and Yoichi nii-san, so I'll have four big brothers!"
Suga didn't know if he wanted to laugh or cry. He just looked at Daichi, who smiled back with one of the warmest smiles that he'd ever seen. "I'm honored that you want me to be your big brother." He then shrugged with a mischievous grin. "And who knows? Maybe I will marry Daichi one day."
"Wait, what?!" Daichi turned to look at the silverette, who was now stuffing his mouth with pancakes. He looked at Daichi with another shrug, his eyes crinkled from smiling.
"But I wanna marry Sugawara-kun!"
"Now hold it, Aimi." Daichi raised a brow at his second oldest sibling. "Suga is my boyfriend. Get your own…not now, but you know what I mean."
"But I want Sugawara," the nine year old fake pouted. "He's my prince."
"Besides, you can't marry him. He's like…nine years older than you. That's two of you," Katsuo explained. "That's weird."
"And if I marry your brother, I'll still be able to see you all the time," Suga smiled, hoping to calm down the argument before it even started.
"Enough about marriage. I just turned eighteen. I have years before I want to even think about marriage."
"So you won't marry Sugawara?"
The boy in question had the nerve to copy his sister’s puppy dog eyes.
Daichi sighed. "Don't you even start, Suga."
His mom couldn't help but giggle. "You two are quite the pair, even when you were just friends. You compliment each other well."
"Thank you, Sawamura-san." Suga took the last bite of his pancakes. "Do you mind if I steal Daichi for the day?"
"Not at all. Enjoy your day together." She watched as the two got up. "And your father should call you later today so check your phone."
"Will do!"
"So I'm assuming you have plans for the day?"
"Of course I do! I wouldn't go anywhere without them." Suga swung their hands between them. He breathed in the cold December air, laughing as it tickled his nose some.
"You didn't have to do all this, you know?"
"Oh, I don't have to do anything, I'm well aware." He looked at Daichi with a smile that the brunette adored. "But I love you and I wanted to because you only turn eighteen once and I'm going to make it special." He stopped the two in front of a large set of doors.
Daichi looked up before looking back down at Suga. "The ice skating rink?" His smile then turned a bit softer as he squeezed the silverette's hand. "This was our first date."
"It was the first time I ever held your hand too."
"That was so I wouldn't fall on my face and embarrass myself. Why are you so good at ice skating, by the way?"
"My mom used to take me and my brother a lot when we were younger," Suga shrugged.
"Well, if you suddenly decide volleyball's not for you, you clearly got ice skating under your belt."
"Flattery will get you everywhere." He then turned back to the building. "Now, how about we recreate our first date…with less falling."
After what felt like hours of trying to impress his could-be-professional-figure-skater boyfriend, the two had finally decided to call it quits and were now walking around the park by the rink. The snow covered the ground in a crystal white, clinging to their hair and clothes.
Even after dating for almost a year, it was moments like these that still gave Daichi butterflies. He turned to Suga before his breath caught.
He looked like an angel. The snow clung to his hair and eyelashes, making his silver hair seem iridescent. And the soft redness on his nose and cheeks only made him look more beautiful.
Daichi was convinced that he was dating the most beautiful boy in the world.
"Why are you looking at me like that?"
Daichi blinked, giving Suga a lopsided grin. "You look like a snow angel."
"What?" His blush only made the snow stand out more.
Daichi smiled. "It looks like your hair is sparkling. You look like a snow angel."
"Why didn't you tell me I had snow in my hair?!" He reached up to brush it out.
The brunette was quick to stop him. "Don't brush it out! I like it. It makes you look more beautiful than you already were."
Suga playfully smacked him with a laugh.
Butterflies, literal butterflies.
"How do you say such sappy things and make them sound so hot?"
"It's my job as your boyfriend."
Suga's eyes lit up before he went through his bag. This was the first time that Daichi had really realized he had it. "That reminds me…" He pulled out a scarf. "I remember you talking about it and you always try to steal mine so…I got you your own."
In his hands was the plush, dark green scarf that Daichi had seen when all the third years had decided to hang out.
"...I can tie it the way I tie mine…that way, we'd be matching."
Daichi wanted nothing more than to kiss the older boy beside him as he wrapped his arms around Suga's waist. "Tempting offer, but I wouldn't look nearly as good as you do." He instead just wrapped it around like a normal scarf, kissing Suga's nose. "But I love the scarf regardless. Thank you."
"Don't thank me yet. I have plenty more surprises up my sleeve."
"That sounds a little scary coming from you."
"My dear birthday boy…interpret how you will."
"I told you you were gonna burn yourself."
"But it looks so good!"
"Well now you're not gonna be able to taste it because you burned your tongue."
"...Kiss it better?"
"Suga, seriously? I{m not making out with you in the middle of the shopping district."
The silverette pouted, taking another sip of his hot chocolate. "...Fine."
"Why are we here anyway?"
"Because the cafe in this district has the best hot chocolate in the prefecture."
"Until you burn your tongue on it."
"Yeah, yeah, laugh it up. You know it's good, admit it."
"I never said it wasn't." Daichi took another sip to prove his point. "But seriously, why are we here?"
"I just told you-"
"Well, well, if it isn't Mr. Refreshing."
The silverette turned with a smile. "Oikawa, hey!" He waited for the two to walk up before he continued. "What're you two doing here?"
"...My mom sent us shopping for some last minute stuff for tomorrow," Oikawa replied. "So I had to drag Iwa-chan along."
"What about you two?" The other brunette asked.
Suga wrapped his arm around Daichi's with a smirk, mirroring how Oikawa and Iwaizumi were standing. "Today's Daichi birthday!"
"Right, it is! You're such a baby!"
Iwaizumi smacked Oikawa as Suga laughed. "Can I borrow Oikawa for a minute?"
"Um, sure."
"Awesome! Keep my guy busy, will you?" He looped arms with Oikawa. "Thanks, Iwaizumi!"
Iwaizumi and Daichi watched the two of them run off around the corner before the older of the two spoke. "...What was that?"
Daichi sighed. "I wish I could tell you. Suga's got a mind of his own."
"I didn't even know they were friends."
"It was shortly after Interhigh. The rest of the team was sulking and apparently Suga was making friends." He shrugged. "Not like that's exactly hard for him. They're actually more alike than you'd think."
"I feel like that's an insult to Sugawara."
"How are the two of you dating?"
"I ask myself the same question everyday." Iwaizumi shrugged. "He's alright, I guess. He's been bothering me about college but he's been bothering me for the past eighteen years so I'm used to it."
"I'm not a bother! How rude, Iwa-chan!"
The two of them looked up. "You're bothering me now, Shittykawa. Are you done harassing Sugawara?"
"I didn't harass him. He came up to me. Anyway, we're good to go! See you to...later, later!" He gave Suga a side hug before grabbing Iwaizumi’s hand. "Bye, Kō-chan!"
Suga waved, looking up at Daichi when he came up behind him. "What was that about?"
"What about?"
"You've always been bad at hiding stuff, Kō. And it seems like Oikawa{s worse at it than you are."
Suga checked his phone before he sighed. "Fine…I actually have one more surprise."
"Can I open my eyes now?"
"Not yet. Be patient."
"You know I don't fully trust you."
"I'm offended! I'll just cancel the surprise then."
"Cancel it?"
Suga squeezed his hand. "You can open your eyes now."
When he did, he was greeted with the Karasuno Volleyball team, a few of his other friends (including Oikawa and Iwaizumi), and his family at a table in the park. A banner was hanging between two trees right about a pile of gifts and a cake sat at one end of the table.
"Happy birthday, Daichi!"
The brunette froze, looking around before looking at Suga. "Did you…?"
"Eighteen isn't that special but…it's still a birthday."
"Suga nii-san planned the whole thing while you two were on your date!" Naoko said, running up to her older brother. "He left Mama in charge and he said he would…he would dis…distract you!"
Daichi picked up his youngest sibling, blowing a raspberry on her cheek. "Well, you all did an amazing job." He put her down and she ran back to Noya and Hinata, who had agreed to play tag with her and the rest of his siblings. He felt arms wrap around his stomach and he turned to grab Suga's hands instead. "You didn't have to do all this."
"I know, but I wanted to. And I may have lied…"
"What do you mean?"
Suga pulled out a small box. "I have one more surprise for you. And if you don't mind, I want you to open it now."
"Um…okay." He opened the box, looking at the two small bracelets inside. "...Is this why you and Oikawa ran off earlier?" Now that he thought about it, there was a jewelry store around the corner
"I didn't know how you felt about rings, so I had these woven bracelets made. Yours is the orange and green one with the K on it, and mine is the orange and blue with the D on it."
"Our favorite colors and the other's initial."
"That and orange for Karasuno." He averted his gaze. "It's not much and it's okay if you don't wanna wear it-"
"Are you kidding? Suga…I love it." He put his bracelet on before slipping the other one on Suga's wrist. He then interlaced their fingers. "...I'll never take it off."
Suga smiled, pressing their foreheads together.
Daichi could've sworn he'd just fallen in love again.
"I love you."
"I love you too." He brought his free hand to Suga's cheek, pulling him in for a kiss.
"Mama, look! They're kissing! Does that mean they're married now?"
The whole group laughed as Suga and Daichi broke apart, not being able to contain their own laughs.
Suga put his head on Daichi’s shoulder, still in a fit of giggles. "Happy birthday, Dai."
