Work Text:
“You’re fucking joking,” Sapnap laughed, both boys were sitting in their dorm room,
“I’m just telling the truth dude, sunrises are way better,” Dream laughed, Sapnap scoffed,
“You’re way off dude, sunsets are the best,” Sapnap argued,
Both boys went to a private high school, well, all the schools they went to were private. Dream came from money, Sapnap didn’t, but the blonde was able to convince his parents to involve the other in everything he did. From summer camps to family trips abroad to school, Sapnap and Dream were together for it all. It was no surprise when, during their senior year of high school, both boys were placed in the same room.
There were two beds in the small room, a large desk sat under the window between the beds. Their window gave them access to the roof, it was slightly slanted, but mostly flat, especially right against their window sill. Outside of their window was the perfect spot to watch the sunrise, Dream had spent most mornings out there already, basking in the warmth of the rising sun.
Their room was fairly simple, as they weren’t in it much. Dream had football daily, his practices often going into late nights. Sapnap had soccer practice daily, his practices not running as long, however, he held a steady part-time job and saved the rest of his time for studying. There were a few things they kept in the room that held a lot of value, Sapnap had a panda-styled backflow incense burner, and Dream had a small Golden Retriever stuffed animal that Sapnap had given him a few years prior as a joke.
“I’m sure I can convince you that sunsets are better,” Sapnap challenged, he was sat on one side of the desk, some homework pulled up on his laptop,
“Sure you opacarophile,” Dream rolled his eyes,
“The fuck is that?” Sapnap asked, faking offense,
“It’s the word used for lovers of sunsets, it’s Latin dumbass,” Dream laughed,
“Then what would you be?” Sapnap asked, “A lover of sunrises or whatever the fuck,”
“Solist,” Dream said, closing his eyes, “Granted, not as cool as yours, but, meh,”
“Exactly why sunsets are better~,” the brunette teased, Dream just scoffed and lightly shoved him.

“Come on! It’ll be fun trust me,” Sapnap begged, trying to pull the other out of bed by the arm,
“Panda stop,” Dream groaned, “I’ve had a long day, come on,”
“I know, that’s why I want you to come with me,” Sapnap explained, Dream sighed, rubbing at his eyes,
“Where are you even going?” Dream asked,
“To the hill at the edge of the forest, please, come on,” Sapnap begged again.
Their school was fairly large and was neatly fit in a big clearing in a very large forest, you end up driving for half an hour before exiting the thicket of trees. Right off of the Football field was a large hill, steep at the base yet smoother at the top. At the top was a large willow tree, at the right angle anyone at the top of the hill is hidden from the school, at the same angle is the best view of the sunset.
And now here they were, Sapnap was carrying a string backpack that Dream didn’t know the content of. They slowly but surely made their way up the hill and behind the weeping willow tree, its branches flowing to the ground, encasing the inside. They sat inside the flowing branches, it became clear to Dream of their plan when Sapnap pulled out a rolling tray. He chuckled lightly to himself as he watched the brunette quickly roll two spliffs, handing one to the blonde, along with a lighter.
Neither of them was new to this, Sapnap had introduced marijuana to the blonde when they were 14, they had been smoking together ever since. Whether as a stress reliever or just a way to pass the time they would find some new way to use the plant. Spliffs were new, blunts were rolled in tobacco paper, joints used a different kind of paper yet the drug inside was mixed with tobacco. Spliffs used the same paper as joints, however, used 100% marijuana in the roll.
They slowly took hits from their separate rolls, it was silent for a few minutes until Dream groaned,
“Hm?” Sapnap hummed, he was already halfway gone,
“I’m not getting that head rush,” he complained, Sapnap chuckled lightly beside him,
“We could shotgun it, maybe that would work,” Sapnap laughed, Dream was quiet for a moment,
“Do you think it would?” his voice was quiet,
“I mean,” Sapnap started, turning to face the other, “Only one way to find out, right?”
Dream rolled his eyes and motioned for the brunette to move closer, when he was in grabbing distance Dream grabbed his bicep and pulled him into his lap. Sapnap sat on his knees in between the blonde’s legs, a light pink dusting his cheeks.
Sapnap smiled shyly and got more comfortable in his position, carefully placing a hand on Dreams cheek. Dream subconsciously pressed his face lightly into the palm of the other, becoming acutely aware of how warm his own face was.
Sapnap took a shaky hit from his spliff, holding it for a second before bringing their faces close together, their lips brushed against each other briefly as Sapnap released the smoke into the other’s mouth. The high hit Dream quickly, spliffs tended to do that, releasing a quick burst of energy before dying out as the drug sunk in. Just as the other began to pull back, Dream stopped him.
“Do that again,” he said quietly, sounding more like a question, Sapnap just giggled lightly.
Sapnap moved his hand from Dreams cheek to the back of his neck, tilting his head up to take another hit before repeating the previous action. They stayed close for a few extra minutes, basking in the warmth the other provided. It wasn’t until a few minutes later that they moved, Sapnap moving first, lifting his head to look behind him at the sky, the colors bleeding from reds and yellows to blacks and blues.
Sapnap stood up slowly, reaching out for the hands of the other. After he stood Sapnap pulled him out from under the tree, the setting sun warming them as it started to disappear. Dream moved behind the brunette and rested his head on top of the others, wrapping his arms tightly around the smaller’s waist.
“Hey, Pandas?” Dream asked quietly, grabbing the boy’s attention, “Why do you like sunsets anyways?”
“Sunsets are a way of showing completeness, the sun is done with its hard day at work and it’s now time to rest,” he explained, “Then, it’s the stars time to shine, the underdogs are given their shot each night to light up the sky just as the sun does. Yet, no one ever sees the hard work they put in,”
“Hm,” Dream hummed, burying his face in Sapnap’s hair, muffling his words, “I still like sunrises better.”

By some magical force, when Dream woke up to his alarm the next morning he awoke to find himself tangled under the sheets with Sapnap. Their legs tangled together, Dreams arms tightly wrapped around the other’s waist, keeping Sapnap’s back straight against his chest.
Dream was quick to shut off his alarm, he took a glance outside to see it was still dark out. He slowly tried to remove himself from the other but ended up waking him up anyway.
“Where are you going?” Sapnap asked quickly, anxiety lacing his voice, Dream quickly calmed him down,
“Don’t worry, I noticed we didn’t fill up our water bottles last night and I was going to fill them up for us. I’m also going to run downstairs and grab one of my breakfast shakes, would you like one?” Dream explained, Sapnap sighed and relaxed, nodding and mumbling out ‘strawberry’.
Dream nodded and grabbed both of their water bottles off the floor from the previous night. He quietly made his way downstairs into the dorm kitchen, where he filled up the bottles and grabbed two strawberry breakfast protein shakes before moving back upstairs. When he re-entered their shared room Sapnap was snuggled into Dream’s covers, tightly holding onto one of the blonde’s pillows. He lightly shook his shoulder to get his attention.
“Come on, I want to show you something,” Dream said after getting the boy’s attention, he helped Sapnap out of bed and handed him his water bottle, placing the shakes in their minifridge for later.
He helped the brunette out the window and onto the cool roof, Sapnap yawned and took small sips from his bottle as Dream climbed out after him.
Their room sat right above the tree line, any further down and most of their view would be blocked by the tall spruce trees that surrounded the building. Sapnap was quick to nestle himself into Dream’s side whence he sat down, he smiled and placed an arm around the shoulders of the other. They sat in silence waiting for the sun to rise, the blacks and purples of the night sky soon would fade away into the reds and yellows of the day.
“You asked me a question last night, do you remember?” Sapnap asked, tilting his head up to look at the other, who nodded, “So, why do you like sunrises so much?”
Dream smiled and shook his shoulders, staying silent for a moment before speaking.
“Can I tell you a secret?” he asked quietly,
“You’re dodging my question,” Sapnap pointed out, Dream rolled his eyes,
“I’m not, it’s relevant I promise,” he sighed, Sapnap nodded,
“You can tell me anything, you know that,” Sapnap smiled, pressing himself farther into Dream’s chest,
“I think...” he paused, hesitating, “I don’t think I’m straight,”
“That’s ok,” Sapnap said,
“I think I like boys,” he continued, Sapnap chuckled lightly,
“That’s ok,” Sapnap repeated, “You still haven’t answered my question,”
“I know,” Dream sighed, hesitating again, “Sunrises represent new beginnings,”
“And?” Sapnap pressed,
“Because of my parents being the way they are I’ve always been pressured into being perfect, you know that,” Dream started, “I don’t... I don’t want to be perfect anymore,”
Sapnap pushed himself up, so they were looking eye to eye, he rested a hand on Dream’s cheek, who instantly pressed onto the warmth.
“Then don’t,” Sapnap shrugged, “Who cares? You’re going to be an adult soon, who cares what they say after that?”
“I don’t know,” his eyes starting to water, “I don’t want to upset them,”
“Hey,” Sapnap said quietly, moving impossibly closer to the other, now placing both hands on his face, “You’re going to be ok, you can’t change who you are,”
“I don’t want to upset them,” Dream repeated, continuing before Sapnap could talk, “I don’t want to lose you,”
“I’m not going to leave you just because you’re not straight,” Sapnap scoffed,
“It’s not that,” Dream cut him off, “I know that, you’ll leave because of something else,”
The air was still around the two, the blonde refusing to meed the brunette’s eyes. The sun had started to rise.
“Hey, look at me,” Sapnap said, adding a little pressure to assist the crying blonde, “Are you fucking dense?”
“Wh-” Dream was cut off,
“You must be fucking stupid,” Sapnap laughed, Dream sat in shock, fear coursing through him, “Can I kiss you?”
Dream sat frozen, the sudden whiplash making him dizzy, his cheeks heating up quickly.
“U-Uhm, ok,” Dream shyly coughed out, making Sapnap giggle.
The brunette moved one of his hands to the back of Dream’s neck, slowly moving closer, giving the blonde time to pull away if he wanted. Dream was quick to push their lips together but was shocked to feel no fireworks, wasn’t there supposed to be fireworks? Instead, it just felt warm, it felt right, all anxieties the boy had before melting away as the sun rose.
They stayed close for a while longer, finally deciding to move when the sun had completely risen. A yawn from Sapnap broke their warm quiet bubble, making both boys erupt in laughter. Sapnap took his time admiring the boy in front of him, his messy blonde hair falling into his eyes, the freckles that dotted his nose and down over his cheeks, and his slightly tired and somewhat red eyes from the night prior.
“Can we go back inside now?” Sapnap asked, rubbing sleep from his eyes, “I’m tired,”
So they did, they climbed back in through the window and fell down onto Dream’s bed once again. Sapnap was tucked into Dream’s chest, holding his water bottle tightly against his chest. It was quiet for a few moments before Dream spoke up once again.
“So,” he started, “What does this make us?”
“What do you want it to make us?” Sapnap asked, not bothering to move,
“I want you to be mine, like, officially,” Dream breathed out, anxiety lacing his words,
“Well, I’m glad we’re on the same track then, lover boy,” Sapnap teased, Dream scoffed and tightened his grip around the other,
“So that makes us?” Dream asked, Sapnap rolled his eyes,
“Dream, will you go out with me?” Sapnap asked, finally shifting to look the other in the eye, Dream laughed,
“I guess,” Dream joked, rolling his eyes,
“What do you mean you guess?” Sapnap asked, raising his voice,
“I’m kidding, I’m kidding,” Dream laughed, “Yes Sapnap, I will go out with you,”
Sapnap laughed at him and moved up to press their noses together, Dream smiled and moved one of his hands up from the other’s waist to rest against his cheek, bringing him into a light kiss. It was short, and Sapnap immediately tucked himself back into Dream’s chest after, red dusting his cheeks.
“I love you, Panda,” Dream breathed out, hiding his face in the brunette’s hair, Sapnap lightly grabbed onto the fabric of Dream’s shirt,
“I love you too, you Solist,” he giggled,
Maybe Sapnap did like sunrises better, just a little bit.
