Work Text:
Things had been complicated, to say the least since Bakugou and Kirishima’s morning on Christmas Eve. Though they had confessed their feelings to each other, there was never an indication that they were dating, or they were going to think about dating.
They had spent their days of Christmas Eve and Christmas having to keep their morning together a secret, there was no saying how people would react to the two of them together in the same bed cuddling. Hell, having to sneak Bakugou out of Kirishima’s room on Christmas Eve morning was a hassle in of itself.
But those days passed quickly, and so did the days leading up to New Years Eve. Obviously, U.A had to spend their New Years together, so Iida, being the class president, made it as his responsibility to bring the class together, with everyone else pitching in their ideas on what to do.
The night came fast and as soon as everyone finished dinner on the 31st, there was about 2 hours of silence before everyone would regroup in the common area and begin the games that they had prepared. Students started spreading out various different games to play, such as Twister, UNO, and there was even movies playing. Everyone set off to play different games with their friends.
Bakugou set to just sit down on the couch, spreading out so no one could sit beside, or even near him. Mina walked up to him, hitting his legs to indicate to move over.
“Move, we’re playing cards.” Mina sat down beside him.
Bakugou began looking around and saw Denki, Sero, and even Kirishima sitting down around the table to play cards. Bakugou gave him quickly an unenthusiastic ‘Really?’ face. All Kirishima could do was shrug and mouth the words ‘Just play.’
Once their cards were shuffled out, they played a couple rounds and for about an hour. Sometimes Bakugou would lose his temper if something didn’t go his way, but that was inevitable, considering it’s Bakugou.
But once Bakugou got tired and annoyed with the game, he made a big fuss, throwing down his cards on the table in front of them, scowling as he leaned back on the couch with his arms crossed. “Alright I’m done.”
“Aww… Kacchan’s angry because he was losing?” Denki gave a fake concerned look as he set down another card, continuing the game.
Once it got to Kirishima’s turn, he set down his cards a bit more formally than Bakugou, “I’ve gotta agree with Bakugou, we’ve been playing for long enough.” Kirishima got up and began walking to where Mina was sitting beside Bakugou.
“No, not you too!” Mina said with a pout on her face and got up from her seat and let Kirishima sit beside Bakugou.
“You guys are no fun!” Denki said before the three of them set off to do something else.
As soon as it was just the two of them, Bakugou mumbled under his breath, “Thanks.”
“Don’t mention it.” Kirishima looked over and gave a faint smile.
Kirishima reached over to the table beside the couch they were sitting on, then picked up the remote, giving it to Bakugou. “Here you can pick a movie to watch.”
It was already 9:30pm at this point, so they had enough time to fit in at least one movie, that is if they didn’t get interrupted.
Thankfully, the two of them watched whatever movie Bakugou could find on, but it was hard to since there was chaos happening all around them of the rest of the students playing games and chattering.
During the movie, it took everything in Kirishima to not go and lean on Bakugou and cuddle up with him, because he had to remind himself of the surroundings, everyone would stare if he were to do so. So Kirishima just made sure to keep his hands to himself, trying to focus on the movie.
As soon as the movie finished, and the credits began rolling, Kirishima checked the clock and saw it was already 11:30pm, and everyone was beginning to settle down.
“Finally your movies over, gimme the remote.” Mina walked back over to Kirishima, holding her arm out until Kirishima gave her the remote. “Now scoot.” Mina went to go sit down Kirishima, forcing him to move over closer to Bakugou so the three of them were now sitting on the couch.
Everyone began sitting down on the couches, or standing behind them, watching Mina turn the channels to find the countdown.
Bakugou sighed before getting up and making his way to the kitchen. Kirishima watched him get up and then got up too to follow him. But before he could go, he threw his phone down on a chair because he knew the seats were going to be taken fast.
He rushed into the kitchen and there were a couple of students there grabbing something to eat, just as Bakugou was.
Bakugou made his way to the fridge, and started looking around, trying to look for something to eat.
Kirishima then went scrambling through the cupboards and found a box of microwavable popcorn, “Here, you wanna share some popcorn?”
“Sure,” Bakugou looked behind him at Kirishima and closed the fridge.
Kirishima walked over to the microwave, then noticed the remaining students in the kitchen had left to go join the others in front of the T.V.
Then it was just Kirishima and Bakugou alone in the kitchen, waiting for the popcorn to finish. The two of them awkwardly watched the bag rotate in the microwave.
“Uhm.. I won’t..“ Bakugou began, looking over at Kirishima. “I won’t do anything at midnight.. Y’know.. Just because who knows how the others will react.”
Kirishima looked over at Bakugou, faking a smile. “Yeah, of course.” He couldn’t help but think about how things could be if Bakugou did openly show his feelings to him. All of Class 1-A already know the two of them are super close, so hugging at midnight might not be that big of a deal, but he couldn’t risk it.
Once the popcorn was done, Kirishima pulled it out, reacting a little to how hot it was. He dropped it down on the counter and opened the cupboard in front of him, pulling out a bowl, and then poured the popcorn in.
“Alright, let’s go.” Kirishima had the bowl of popcorn in his hand.
The two of them walked back into the common room and saw that Mineta had stolen the seat that Kirishima ‘reserved’ by throwing his phone down on it.
Kirishima sighed and walked over to Mineta. “I reserved that seat. Move!”
Mineta looked around at the seat, eyebrows furrowed. “I don’t…I don’t see your name on it.” He then looked over at Kirishima with a smug face.
“No, but my phone was there-“ Kirishima cut himself off when he looked at the table and saw his phone there.
“Oh that was your phone? Whoops.” Mineta looked over at the phone then back at Kirishima. “You know what they say, early bird gets the worm.” Mineta leaned back in the chair.
“But I was there bef-“ Kirishima got cut off again but this time by Bakugou putting a hand on his shoulder.
“Oi, Ball Face, scram.” Bakugou put on an intimidating face, before balling his fist, a small spark arising from it.
Mineta’s eyes widened as he ran away to where Denki was sitting, leaving the chair open for the two of them.
“Thanks.” Kirishima smiled as he looked over at Bakugou, sitting down on the chair.
“Don’t mention it.” Bakugou sat down on the arm of the chair, slightly smiling back.
The two of them stayed silent, just watching what entertainment was playing on the T.V until the class had to erupt as the 10 second countdown began.
Everyone began counting down synchronically, voices getting louder as the numbers became smaller, then they all yelled “Happy New Year!”
As the clock struck 12:00, Kirishima smiled as he looked around at his classmates, observing all of them cheering and hugging each other. Of course he was happy too, but he looked to his side, his smile ever so slightly fading, and saw Bakugou sitting on the arm of the chair, keeping his rough exterior open. He knew that he couldn’t get what the rest of the class was giving from Bakugou, his reputation was too high to stoop down to the level of hugging his ‘Best Friend’ right at midnight.
He was interrupted in his thoughts by Denki walking over to the both of them, arms open as he pulled the both of them in for a hug.
“Yo guys! Happy New Year!!” Denki squeezed on the two of them together in the hug, making for an uncomfortable way to embrace the two of them.
Kirishima slightly lifted his hands up to pull away from the hug. “Yeah!” Kirishima gave a big teethy smile, “Happy New Year!”
Denki then went off to go say the same thing to his other classmates.
Kirishima looked up at Bakugou, who was currently scanning the room, arms now crossed. Kirishima brought a hand to his arm, slightly nudging to get his attention. “Hey,” Kirishima said once Bakugou looked at him. “Happy New Year.” He gave more of a sincere smile to Bakugou.
Bakugou faintly responded with, “Happy New Year,” He then got up from the arm of the chair, and started walking away. “I’m gonna head to my room, goodnight.”
“Okay, I’m gonna stick around for a bit, night.” Kirishima responded, then watched Bakugou leave the common room.
Kirishima turned back to the rest of the class, who had just been talking about their resolutions, and how they’re going to do things differently this year. That got him thinking, ‘Maybe Bakugou and I could do things differently…Maybe we could actually openly be in this ‘relationship’’
So not long after, Kirishima got up and left the class and went to head to his room, but he had to stop somewhere beforehand.
Once he got to the door of Bakugou’s room, he looked down at the crack at the bottom and noticed his room light was still on, so he was still awake. He took a deep breath, then knocked on the door. Ever since the morning of Christmas Eve, Kirishima learned that Bakugou never minded him getting bugged, as long as Kirishima was the one doing the bugging.
He heard scrambling in the room room then heard Bakugou faintly say, “I’ll be right there, Eiji.”
Kirishima was a bit surprised that Bakugou knew it was him immediately, but then again, who else was going to be knocking on Bakugou’s door?
Once Bakugou opened the door, Kirishima noticed he had changed into his pyjamas already. Which weren’t very different from his normal clothes. “Hey, come in.” Bakugou got out of the way so Kirishima could pass him and walk into his room. “What’s up?”
Kirishima walked further into Bakugou’s room, and acquainting himself on the edge of his bed. “Did you make any resolutions?”
“Oh god,” Bakugou went to go sit down beside Kirishima on the bed. “You’re starting to sound like Deku.”
“Hey!” Kirishima punched him on the shoulder, “I mean it.”
“Ouch..” Bakugou faked his pain, then taking a deep breath before thinking about what Kirishima said. “I hadn’t really thought of any…Did you?”
“I was thinking.. Maybe we could make one together.” Kirishima looked over, picking at the skin around his nails.
“Oh..Yeah, sure. What were you thinking?” Bakugou noticed Kirishima picking at his hands, and swatted them away with a faint, “Stop that.”
“I dunno… Like maybe.. Act like a…” Kirishima dropped his head as he let his voice wander off, hoping that Bakugou would pick up what he was saying, because he didn’t have the courage to finish the sentence.
“Like a…couple?” Bakugou genuinely asked, trying to look in the red head’s eyes.
Kirishima slightly lifted his head up, and gave a small nod. Then took a deep breath before beginning to speak. “I mean we don’t act like we’re ‘together’…” Kirishima lifted up air quotes. “…When it’s not just the two of us…” Before Bakugou could interject, Kirishima cut him off. “And I know what you’re going to say.. ’They’ll look at us weirdly’, or ‘Who knows what they’ll say behind our backs’… But don’t you think this relationship is more important than the opinions of others?”
Bakugou was left speechless for a few seconds, trying to digest what Kirishima said. “Y-yeah of course!” Bakugou scooted over and grabbed Kirishima’s hand, “You’re right. Who gives a shit about what those extras think?” His grip on Kirishima’s hand tightened. “I’m sorry for making you think you weren’t important…”
All Kirishima could do to answer was give a smile, “It’s fine..But uhm.. Promise me that you won’t be so distant to me in front of the rest of the class anymore.”
Bakugou grabbed Kirishima’s waist to pull him to face him fully, so the two of them were looking at each other in the eyes. “I promise, that in front of the class, I will hug you.. I will hold your hand.. and I will…”
Bakugou then put his hand on Kirishima’s cheek, pulling himself in to softly connect their lips. Kirishima’s brain short-circuited and as soon as Bakugou pulled away from their brief first kiss. He squinted his eyes and said, “Ok maybe I won’t do that in front of the class, if that’s your reaction.”
It took a second for Kirishima to process what just happened, and as soon as he did, his face flushed dark red. Bakugou and him just had their first kiss. “W-wait, do it again.”
“Okay,” Bakugou pulled himself back in, pressing another kiss on Kirishima’s lips, but this time Kirishima kissed him back. He knew the two of them had never done this, and it was shown by how unexperienced their kiss was. But nothing else seemed to matter to Kirishima, the feeling of Bakugou’s lips on his, the hand that lingered on his cheek, he had a feeling this year was going to be great.
A few seconds later, Bakugou pulled away, “Better?”
Kirishima nodded, then immediately went in to hug Bakugou, showering small kisses all around his face.
Bakugou chuckled, basically prying Kirishima off of him. “Okay, okay…Calm down.” Once Kirishima had settled, Bakugou continued. “You wanna sleep in here tonight?”
“Yeah!” Kirishima said joyfully, his eyes glinting with a small sparkle. “I’m gonna go get my pyjama’s then I’ll be right back!” He quickly gave Bakugou a kiss on the cheek before leaving his room abruptly.
Kirishima basically skipped his way from Bakugou’s room to his, a smile not leaving his face even when he was changing. He rushed back to Bakugou’s room, not bothering to knock since he knew Bakugou was just going to be in the bed.
“Should I turn the light off?” Kirishima asked as soon as he closed the door to the room, looking over at Bakugou who was now laying down under the covers.
“Yeah, we aren’t gonna sleep with the lights on, are we?” Bakugou questioned, his head lifted up from the pillow slightly.
“True.” Kirishima said before turning the light switch off, slowly making his way to the bed, his arms out so he didn’t hit anything.
Once he got to the bed, Bakugou lifted the covers up so he could fit in. Kirishima went to lay down beside him, and when the covers dropped, Kirishima found Bakugou’s hand wrapped around him. He turned his head so he faced Bakugou, who was already looking down at him.
“What are we?” Kirishima turned his body over and looked in Bakugou’s eyes.
“Well I mean I guess… We’re boyfriends?” Bakugou thought for a second. “I-if that’s okay with you.”
“Of course that’s okay with me.” Kirishima leaned in to kiss him briefly again, then wrapped his arm around Bakugou.
“My boyfriend Katsuki Bakugou…”
