Dean and Castiel spend a quiet Christmas together.

Work Text:

It’s a quiet affair. Neither of them come from big families; Dean’s brother is staying at school for the winter break to do some volunteering around the city to earn extra credits, and Castiel’s brother had said, “I would rather saw off my own foot and eat it than celebrate that stupid holiday”.

While Dean and Cas aren’t particularly festive themselves, they still decided to make a day out of it. They woke up late without alarms, stretching out in their shared bed, playing footsie and sharing smiles and kisses under the warmth and security of the sleep-warmed blankets. They shared a relaxing shower, steaming up the bathroom as they lazily washed each other, hands wandering, lips tasting.

Breakfast was simple, scrambled eggs and toast.

They turned on the Hallmark channel and curled up on the couch but muted the television so they could instead chat softly about mundane things. Snow fell and they watched it through the window, deciding to make love when the frost started crawling up the glass.

Dean spiked the eggnog, Castiel sang all the wrong words to Christmas carols on the radio after they turned off the television, and for dinner they had grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup.

The lazy day had them in bed early as well, but sleep didn’t come until much later. Comfy under the blankets they exchanged gifts - Dean gifted Cas emerald cufflinks with his initials, wanting Cas to have a reminder of him every day at work, even when stuck in the most boring of meetings.

Cas gifted Dean the Led Zeppelin record with the turquoise lettering, saying he found it in a thrift shop that had no idea the value of it.

Dean can’t remember having great Christmases as a child, and he can’t really recall anything significant in his adult life. But the best gift he could ever have, he knows, is the man in his arms looking at him like he, too, is the best gift.

Murmurs of ‘merry Christmas’, smiles on faces as they drift off, each knowing that this is, easily, the most magical Christmas they’ve ever had.
