For such a small group of people, they certainly could be loud when the time came. Rei walked in to Koga wrestling with Leon in an attempt to prevent him from eating the food that was set out (it wasn't going well). The twins were doing something to the decorations, but who knew what? Rei certainly didn't. Adonis was messing with the television and putting on the timer, but Kaoru was nowhere to be found.
Tossing his keys onto the kitchen counter, Rei draped himself over the couch, (im)patiently waiting for their final party member. A very cute final party member. Who was unfortunately taking a very long time to show up. At this point, Kaoru would miss the main event. After all, only one day in the year was New Year's Eve, and he was about to miss it.
Rei sighed. If only Kaoru would be there earlier. It would've been nice to see him setting up with the others or even surprise him from behind. Maybe tonight he'd finally have the courage to tell the blonde how he felt. It was a new year, after all. Surely that must come with at least a little more confidence.
The door opened as said blonde finally arrived. He rushed in with unruly hair and heavy breathing only a few minutes before midnight. "Sorry I'm late everyone! I had to check something for a bit."
Koga audibly groaned at how bright Rei's face lit up seeing him. "I fuckin' hate gay people."
Adonis lightly nudged his shoulder as he grumbled. "You're gay too, Oogami."
Kaoru either didn't notice or ignored them as he walked up to Rei. Smiling cheekily, he asked, "It's almost midnight. Isn't this when you should be most awake, Rei-kun~?"
Hopefully he didn't notice the slight blush on Rei's face as he helplessly searched for a response. "Kaoru-kun, an old vampire like myself isn't capable of summoning the energy required for this sort of event."
"It's only Undead and the twins here tonight though, Rei-kun," he teased. "Surely you can spare a bit more energy to spend with u-"
Koga cut him off as he shoved Kaoru onto Rei. "Move, idiot. There's only a minute left till midnight, and the rest of us gotta count down too, ya fuckin' lovebirds."
Rei flushed deeper at the close proximity, but said nothing as he adjusted himself so that Kaoru could get comfortable. He didn't move much though, and repositioned himself so that he was sitting on Rei's lap, winking back at him as he did. Rei was so fucked. Surely he knew what he was doing, right?
He didn't have much time to think about that possibility, though. The others quickly joined them in settling onto the couch, a tangled mess of limbs, and counted down with the TV. Rei noticed how Koga squirmed a bit to try and get closer to Adonis, even with how close they already were, and chuckled a bit under his breath.
"Three... two... one... Happy New Year, everyone!" They cheered together as the twins blew confetti above them. It fell slowly, but quickly accumulated as more of it landed. A couple pieces stuck to Kaoru's nose, and Rei blew them off as he giggled.
Kaoru brushed a bit off of Rei's shoulders, laughing at how it stuck onto his sweater. As he gently picked the pieces out of Rei's hair, Kaoru took the chance to wrap his arms around his neck and kiss him.
He smiled softly at Rei, blushing slightly. "Happy New Year, Rei-kun."
They both ignored Koga gagging next to them as Rei embraced Kaoru once again. Sometimes there wasn't a need to acknowledge everything that happened during an important moment. Starting the new year off this way was the best thing that Rei could have only dreamed of happening. Koga couldn't ruin that if he had anything to say about it. For now, all that mattered was kissing Kaoru like his life depended on it (and it most certainly did).
