Work Text:

It's like a fad. Having a girlfriend was kind of a requirement for everyone in high school so Xiumin just went along with it and agreed to the first girl that confessed to him. It goes without saying that he didn't have any special feelings towards her, but since he agreed to it and she isn't too annoying he just keeps their relationship going. It's not like he has anyone in his mind anyway...

So when they are in the subway on their way home after school the wagons are usually full packed and Xiumin and his girlfriend (Jimin) have no other choice but to stand close, almost pressed against each other. Xiumin didn't mind the physical contact, since he was used to hold her hands and her being close all the time as well. Her shoulders touch his chest and she was busy staring down her mobile and writing all her friends. Even though he told her a thousand times to put her satchel in front of her or as for now; in between them, because for one he has to be an attentive and caring boyfriend, but also because he was actually a careful person and didn't want to make it too easy for the thieves and he'd had to cheer her up in the end anyway and in order to prevent those bothersome things from happening to begin with he always reminded her, but today was just another day were she was confident enough that nothing would happen. In the end he always agrees to her unwise decisions since he simply doesn’t care enough for their whole relation and everything that evolves around it.

He also never made a move on her to kiss her or anything more, which is why they never did anything more than holding hands or from his side a halfhearted hug. Holding her in his arms definitely felt nice, she had a great body and always smelled like some expensive flower shampoo but it just didn't give him the satisfaction as a to when he had someone he badly wanted to hold in his arms and didn't want them to leave.

He emotionlessly watches her and quickly loses interest of the sight in front of him. A tired sigh leaves his lips and he looks around in the subway. The way too strong air conditioner gives a shiver down his spine and he tried to adjust himself in the crowded subway but while doing that he only bumps into other people. Just when the subway arrives in the next station it wasn’t apparently the best time to get comfortable on his spot…After apologizing and his girlfriend ignoring his actions the train starts moving again and he looks back up and apparently a guy has entered at the last station where they stopped a few minutes ago, because he was sure he didn't see that breathtaking handsome guy before.

In fact he had to blink a few times, because he just couldn’t believe his eyes. The boy is only about 3 feet away from him but it was close enough for him to have a good look at the other’s facial features. Never before was Xiumin so happy to have perfect eyesight. The pretty boy had hazelnut straight hair and his bands were partially a little too long and slightly covering his eyes. It looked really cute. From seeing the noticeable glasses he couldn’t help but assume him to be clever and probably intelligent, but maybe it was just him wanting to be even more immersed into the man he’s staring at. It’s not like he had anything better to do with his unimportant girlfriend right next to him after all… It sounded crazy, but the guy just looked so handsome that the only thought that crossed Xiumin’s mind after staring at the boy for multiple stops, was that he wanted to become his friend. Or at least get to know him in anyway. He just didn’t want to let him leave that easily. He just wanted to be at least an acquaintance of that guy. Maybe just as an achievement to say he has such a handsome friend or maybe for something else he didn’t know exactly what it was. Just now he starts to realize that he and Jimin will have to get off the subway soon and he couldn’t think of a reasonable reason to keep driving with it. Maybe say he got a call? No, he hasn’t looked at his phone the entire ride. Maybe he left something behind and he has to re-enter the wagon? Also no, he literally has everything he needs in his pockets as pragmatic as he is… To his discomfort he’s getting nervous as to what to now. Time seems to run against him. What he also didn’t like was the thought of the boy just leaving the next station, because he couldn’t just walk behind him like a creep. Damn, this was just so difficult and getting ridiculous. He thinks his brain certainly stopped thinking rationally. Panicking he looks left and right, trying desperately to find anything he could get to know the stranger, but without success.

Just when the tube slowed down to enter the next station, Xiumin felt a terrible cold shiver down his spine as he saw the boy turning and squeezing himself within the crowd, obviously preparing himself to exit as soon as the wagon came to halt. His heartbeat increased and for a moment he felt sick. Xiumin shuts his eyes closed firmly, keeping them this way, in order to prevent seeing the pretty boy leave his life as fast as he came into it. He feels the subway slowing down more and eventually standing completely still, the door opening and the crowd moving while he tried to think of something else wanting this moment to pass by faster. Until, he hears a weak startled sound from his girlfriend. He opens his eyes, looks down to her wondering what this sound was about, only to see her trying to turn around towards something that caught her attention, and that happened to be the handsome guy Xiumin stared at the past few stations.

“Ah, I’m sorry it seems that my cardigan got stuck with your bag.” He hears the angelic voice that belongs to the brown haired boy for the first time.

“No problem, I’ll try to get your clothes off it, without ripping it.” Jimin replies friendly.

With the scene unfolding in front of his eyes, the doors close, the train starts moving again and Xiumin couldn’t believe his luck. For once he was thankful his girlfriend didn’t listen to him. He watches them both trying to unravel the fabric unscathed. Contemplating whether to leave them both to their clumsy trying to solve their problem at hand or actually take action, he chose the second. For some reason, he wanted to be the knight in shining in armor. And even if it’s just something as miniscule as to securing the fabric at a cardigan.

“Let me do that” Jimin’s boyfriend says as he leans over to get closer to the raveled fabric and unravels it with a skillful movement. During the act, his heart raced, suddenly being closer to the stranger and he’s sure that what he was smelling, was the other one’s perfume and it smelled just right.

“Uh, thanks… hyung?” The angelic voice said, unsure of the other’s age and Xiumin just grinned looking down, not acknowledging him any further. Despite him being fast, they still passed four stations in the meanwhile. All three noticing this circumstance, decide to exit the tube, since all of them drove further than what they wanted. When they exited, the stranger went in front of the couple and Xiumin couldn’t help but smile at this coincidental meeting. On the little way outside the wagon Xiumin noticed some kind of logo on the other boy’s clothes, at first fuzzy but then his eyes sharpens his vision and he was more than surprised that it was his high school’s logo. This much luck on a single day couldn’t be possible.

“Sorry for the inconvenience! Seems like we got off later than you wanted. We’ll be leaving now, so please excuse us.” Jimin once again says very politely as soon as they left the wagon. The stranger just smiled friendly and was about to answer when Xiumin interrupts, taking all his courage and tries to ask as nonchalant as possible:

“We’re in the same school, which class are you in?”

Taken aback by the sudden question and wondering whether he should actually answer to that, the stranger widened his eyes and gripped his bag a little firmer. After a short instance, which felt like an eternity to Xiumin, his grip loosens and he finally answers calmly:

“Byun Baekhyun in 2nd year, class 3” And Xiumin knew exactly where he could find him again. A quick nod and he puts his arm around his girlfriend, signaling both he wanted to leave and they went away, each going they respective ways. A complacent smile finds his way on his way home and he couldn’t be any happier, even though he might have used up his entire luck for the rest of the year. His farewell to Jimin was quicker and shallower than usual, but she didn’t say or notice anything. When he finally got rid of his girlfriend he scampers back home, feeling euphoria in his body.

“2nd year, class 3, huh?” He mumbled to himself and emphasizes on the other’s beautiful name “Baekhyun ~”

The next day in school Xiumin knew exactly where he’d go to when he has a free minute, and so he did.
