Work Text:

“Are you sure this is a good idea, Luz?”

Amity watches as her girlfriend presents to her a purple cloth blindfold and flashes the happiest of grins.

“Of course it’s a good idea! I figured that since it’s our first date that I’d surprise you with where we’re going. But don’t worry, I know you’ll love it! Now, just hop on Owlbert and let me tie this around your eyes, then WHOOSH! We'll be off!”

Titan, could Luz get any cuter? She takes both ends of the blindfold and instructs Amity to hold still as she ties it on. “Is that good?”
“Sure it is, can we get going?”
“Aye aye, my awesome girlfriend.” With that, Luz gives Owlbert a whack, and they soar high, high, into the deep blue-violet sky. The wind rushes past their cheeks and the town shrinks below them as they race against the clouds. “This view is so beautiful,” muses Luz, taking in the sights around her, “but not as beautiful as you, Amity.”

“I’m sure it is, but I think I’ll pass on seeing it…” she held onto Luz tighter and rested her head on her shoulders, “and thanks.”

Luz melted into the touch and smiled softly as the two were being carried through the endless sky, soaking in the moment, wishing it would last forever.

After a few minutes of flying (or what seemed like a few eternities to Amity), they arrive at their destination. Luz hops off the staff and takes Amity’s hands, leading her to the spot.

“All right, I got you, just walk this way- wait, watch out for that rock, you’ll trip!- okay, just a little further… almost there…”

Amity’s mind is racing. Where could they possibly be? Heck, how did she even get in this position? What if this wasn’t a date after all, and Luz was going to break up with her, or tell her something awful? Or what if this all goes wrong, and-

“Okay, we’re here! You can take off your blindfold. Wait, don’t move, let me just take it off for you. So, what do you think?”

Amity couldn’t believe what she was seeing.

She couldn’t believe that it was still here, or that she’d forgotten about it, but Luz by her side couldn’t make it more clear.

Before them was the tree they created together at Grom. Its massive trunk stood its ground and commanded its presence, and its branches swirled around and extended upward,  piercing the sky. Clusters of pink leaves made their home in various places across and on top of the trunk, and they would flurry away and be carried by the wind with every gust. The branches would rustle and shake, almost as if they were breathing and coming to life.

The second most beautiful thing Amity had come across.

Without saying anything, Amity lets go of Luz’s hand and walks towards the tree. Each step is deliberate, like she’s on a mission to seek out and fulfill a longing she didn’t even know she had. She approaches it and gently runs her hand across its trunk, in a state of pure awe and wonder. This is what she and Luz had created and left behind all those weeks ago?

“I thought you would want to see this,” said Luz, making her way next to her girlfriend. “Grom was really a crazy night, in all the best ways, but we never really talked about it or came back here afterwards. Even after we created something like this together. And with everything going on right now, I just wanted to show you, or to remind you at least, that no matter what,” she continued, taking Amity’s hand into hers, lowering her voice slightly, “that we will get through it, because we have each other.”

Amity turned toward her girlfriend and held her hand tighter and looked into her eyes, those that sparkled with pure joy when she was happy but had seen horrors and cried so many tears. And yet here she was now, smiling softly, watching over her, taking her to a place that just made her heart explode with love and admiration. What did she do to deserve her? She couldn’t even begin to express her gratitude, not just for taking her here, but for being a part of her life, for everything she’s done for everyone.

“Now it’s your turn to hang on tight,” Amity chimed as she drew a large spell circle in the air and hugged Luz close to her, who was completely taken by surprise. A goopy purple Abomination hand shoots them up in the air and places them on a branch side-by-side, overlooking the sea and sunset. The spell subsides as quickly as it had been cast, leaving Luz seeing stars for a moment.

“Are you all right?” Amity giggled. “Sorry about that, I just had an idea and didn’t know what to do.”
“Oh, no, don’t worry, it’s completely-” and then came Luz’s turn to be awestruck.

She had seen many a sunset back in the Human Realm, but not quite as many in the Boiling Isles because she was so busy with her magical training, school, and home life. Eda had once taught her to look at things from a different angle, that they might be beautiful without realizing, but Luz had never seen a sunset like this. The sky was a canvas of blues, purples, and yellows, all brushed across in a vibrant swirl of color. Clouds lazily hung about overhead, and the moon gave off a faint glow in the distance, distracted by the burning brightness of the sun sinking below the horizon with an ocean of calm waves in the foreground.

The second most beautiful thing Luz had come across.

“I thought you would want to see this, too,” said Amity, taking Luz’s hand in hers, pushing rogue tufts of hair out of Luz’s face with her other. Luz rested her free hand on top of Amity’s as she stroked her hair, blushing slightly. “Thank you,” she said softly, “I love it.”

They watched the sky fade to black and the moon come into focus to illuminate the little world around them. Their time together was filled with the usual pleasant banter and was enjoyed by both. By the time night had completely fallen, Luz noticed that it was a similar setting to a certain eventful night they shared not too long ago.

“Now it’s just like it was at the end of Grom, remember?” said Luz. “After we danced, the tree bloomed, and we got our tiaras. Oh, and you threw out the letter to your mystery crush, whoever that could have been,” she joked. “You know I would have said yes, right?”

Amity sighed. “Yeah, I know, but I was so wrapped up in the whole fight and ‘worst fear’ aspect that I psyched myself out, I guess. I know I should have fought my own battle and just should have faced my fears, but-”

“But if you did, then I wouldn’t have replaced you as Grom Queen, and we wouldn’t have danced and created this,” replied Luz, gesturing to the tree that was present all around.

“I guess things do happen for a reason, huh?”

“Whether or not they do, that’s not important here. What is is that we came together to create something beautiful out of love, and that was before we even admitted our feelings! If we were able to do that in the very beginning, just imagine what the future holds for us!” Luz’s eyes welled with tears, but gazed lovingly into Amity’s. Hearts beated faster, beaming and overflowing. Bodies leaning in, eyes fluttering shut, anticipation running through their minds a mile a minute.

A gentle kiss shared between them, full of inexperience, full of love.

“I can’t wait,” whispered Amity, with Luz in her arms, “and yet I want this moment to last forever.”

Notes:

Thank you so much, dear reader, for reading my first (published) fic!! :,) I've had this idea for a Lumity fic for a while now, and finally got around to getting it on paper instead of just daydreaming about it all day. I have a few other TOH fic ideas (for both oneshots and longer stories), so feedback is greatly appreciated; I'm always open to ways to improve. I hope you enjoyed reading as much as I enjoyed writing, and have a lovely day/night! <3
