Work Text:
The morning was setting up for the day, the sunrise was almost innocent like the sun had transformed into a child. The sunrise laid down on the entire neighborhood, including the home of Jon Arbuckle and his two pets, tabby cat Garfield and dog Odie. Odie was the first to wake up, disturbing Jon’s sleeping by going into his room, leaping into the bed and giving him a big old lick on the face. Jon awoke with a smile, petted Odie and got up out of bed. The stairway was dimly lit, it wasn’t too dark so thankfully Jon was able to see where he was going without having a silly and clumsy little accident, like waking up Garfield.
Speaking of Garfield, the first thing Jon and Odie did was check on him to see if he was still tucked in tight sleeping away. Sure enough, that’s exactly what he was doing. He was in the exact same position, in the exact bed, in the exact same place he always slept in. The only difference was that Garfield seemed way happier than he usually did. Sure, he was pretty much always seemingly happy when he slept, but this time around his smile seemed way wider than it usually was expected to be.
“Huh. Seems that Garfield’s having a fantastic dream.” Jon commented. “I wonder what he’s dreaming about.”
Jon turned around to face the direction of the kitchen. “I’ll make lasagna for Garfield. That’ll be a great way to wake him up without making him cranky.” He said as started towards the kitchen, his feet starting to pick up a less tired pace.
While Jon was off making Garfield’s breakfast, Odie went quietly, softly and slowly over to the orange tabby cat to examine him really closely. What could this Monday-hating, lasagna-loving cat possibly be dreaming about that could make him feel so much as if he was in a winter wonderland? Odie thought it probably had something to do with Mondays not existing and him being in a lasagna wonderland instead of a winter wonderland. The truth is both of those answers were wrong, the second one being wrong to an extent.
While Odie kept on conducting heavy studies on the cat, this is where an actual glimpse of Garfield’s dream is revealed. In this fantasy it is revealed to be an overly exaggerated way of how Garfield wants the whole world to perceive him as: a king with heavy authority over everyone and everything. Literally.
In the kingdom of Garfville, Garfield is shown to be seated atop his throne looking just as smug as ever. We was wearing an antique crown made of gold, with blue, red, green and purple jewels laying out patterned on the very bottom. He wore a exquisite cape with purple velvet that most likely would’ve costed $1000. Finally he had a bewitching scepter that had red jewels patterning on the collar in a orderly manner.
He was surrounded by tons of lasagna, which more and more of were being pumped out by Jon who was working as a servant. Two guards were standing in front of the cat’s seat, protecting it while having blank and boring looks on their faces. All of the people who did Garfield wrong over the years, including Odie and Nermal, were cleaning up any speck of dirt off the floor. Jon trudged into the room with a big tray of lasagna. “Here’s your lunch King Garfield.” He said to the overlord.
“Excellent… now make me another tray. 200 is never enough.” The stubborn cat replied.
Jon knew there was no arguing with the king, otherwise he’d be forced to be publicly humiliated by having fruit be thrown at him. So he sighed and went back into the kitchen like the unfortunate yet obedient servant he was.
“King Garfield! I’m tired from all this cleaning!” Nermal whined. “Can I have a break? Please?”
“No.” King Garfield replied smugly. “It is against the law to take breaks when I don’t tell you to. Now go back to work or else I’m sending you to Antarctica.”
Nermal groaned then went back to work. He had to take a break real bad but didn’t want to get sent to the coldest place on Earth. He decided it was best to try to suck it up and keep working. Odie disagreed though. So much so to the point where he took it a step further. He dropped everything he was doing, sprinted toward the window and confidently jumped out of the Hell of a place. Or at least he tried to, before Garfield somehow got a magic fishing pole, threw it out the window and caught Odie with it.
“You silly dog. Don’t you know you can’t leave the castle unless I command you to?” Garfield said still with that sly grin on his face. “Now get back to work.” Garfield commanded.
Odie reluctantly returned to his work whimpering. No matter how many plans he had, there truly was no escaping the powerful overlord that is King Garfield.
Before anyone could do anything else, the door to the hallway opened. There behind the door, it was revealed to be a pink cat with dark red lipstick. She had the same outfit on as King Garfield. She had an unique beauty about her that made all the male cats fall madly for her.
“Good morning my sweet Queen Arlene.” King Garfield said with a huge grin on his face, making the smugly grin hidden.
“Good morning King honey bunches!” Queen Arlene replied. She went up to the King and kissed him on the cheek with her lips as red as a fire truck. King Garfield grew hearts in his eyes and then then relaxed on the left armrest of his throne.
“He fainted? He fainted! EVERYBODY ESCAPE!” Jon yelled jumping out of the kitchen. Everyone made a run for it and tried exiting through the door. However nothing is ever so simple with Garfield in this fantasy, as Garfield immediately got up, pressed a button on the side of his throne and blocked the doorway with millions upon millions of security.
“Ha! Gotcha. Now get back to work fools.” King Garfield said. Everyone groaned and went back to what they were all doing.
“Being a king is awesome. Take it from me, overlord King Garfield. I get to do whatever I want without getting scolded. I know awesome.”
Suddenly Odie jumped up onto Garfield and licked his face. Garfield awoke from his dream and woke up to a the typically energetic Odie, who had licked his face in order to awake him. Garfield was back in reality, covered in dog drool, in his house, where he had no authority over anything. Garfield frowned and furrowed his eyebrows. ‘Dang you Odie. Why did you have to wake me up from my marvelous dream?’ Garfield thought to himself.
“Oh good! You’re awake Garfield! Just in time to eat your breakfast.” Jon said as he came into the room with a mouth-watering tray of lasagna.
Garfield started drooling as he practically floated his way over to the lasagna. Jon put the lasagna on the ground allowing Garfield to have a space to eat it. Before he could feast though, the doorbell rang. “I’ll get it!” Jon said making his way over to the door. When he opened it, an adorable gray kitten was standing in the doorway.
“It’s Nermal! Hi Nermal! How are you doing today you little cutie? Who’s a good little kitty cat? You are! Yes you are!” Jon said praising the little kitty.
“Oh brother…” Garfield said, sprouting an annoyed expression.
