Work Text:
A warm savannah wind tousled Etho's scraggly white hair as he trudged up the side of the mountain. Things were quiet in the shattered savannah, and had he been back at the snow fortress, it would have felt eerie. However, the quiet now felt peaceful, homely, and as he took that last step over the threshold, he realized just how exhausted and aching for home he really was.
Sneaking a peek around the corner, he spotted Iskall, quietly reading a paper in his room. He had one leg perched across the other and looked completely unaware as Etho rounded the corner. In fact, Etho had not even realized Iskall knew he was there until the Swede spoke up, eyes never wavering from his reading material.
"He's in your room, been waiting for you." A small smile spread across Iskall's lips as he spoke, prompting a warm grin from his base-buddy.
Etho found that his legs began moving on their own, picking up the pace for him. His heart was racing as he rounded another corner and-
There he was, curled up on Etho's bed under his own mossy jacket, loudly snoring. Etho's heart soared and he carefully approached the bed. Lifting a corner of the covers, he quietly slid under the sheets and closed his eyes, trying his best not to disturb the sleeping mossy-goblin beside him. But despite his efforts, Bdubs turned over and groggily blinked at Etho.
"I wasn't sleeping I swear."
Etho chuckled and gently pushed back Bdub's hair swoop. "Hey, buddy."
"Welcome home, Etho."
"Thanks, Bdubs."
The two exchanged a knowing smile, and Bdubs clumsily shifted the covers on top of himself, curling up next to his bedmate. Etho gently wrapped his arms around the other, and the two laid there quietly for some time.
"Sorry I couldn't win it for you..." Etho frowned, holding onto Bdubs tighter.
"It's fine, it's fine. I'm just glad to have you back." Bdubs pressed his face into Etho's chest, finding comfort in the warmth and plush of his jacket.
"Maybe next time."
"Yeah, buddy."
The two fell into a more comfortable silence this time, Etho closing his eyes and letting the exhaustion wash over him. But something else pulled at him, one more thing he needed to say.
"Y'know, Bdubs, we never consummated our marriage."
Etho burst into a loud cackle as Bdubs began yelling gibberish at him. Just down the hall, Iskall chuckled and turned the page of his paper.
All was well.
