“I never get a full night's sleep around you.” Molly cracked an eye open, realizing the sound was coming from the baby monitor by Khan’s side of the bed. She shut her eye again and relaxed, knowing Khan was with Edmund, taking care of their child to let her get a little more sleep. Not that he needed as much sleep as she did; with his enhanced stamina and other augmented abilities, he could survive on a handful of hours of sleep while she needed at least a full eight, which meant he got up with the baby a lot.
She’d never really thought about just how much until now.
“Your mum is a regular human. We have no idea what you’re going to be, but considering you don’t cry often and most of the time you’re just lonely, I think you’ve got some augmented DNA in you. Which will be good for when you’re older and have a child of your own.”
Molly smiled at the one-sided conversation Khan was having with their son. It was rather cute, and he would probably hate company interrupting him, so she’d lay in bed and just listen.
“My world changed when I met your mother, did you know that? I was an evil bastard in my own universe, but your mother saved me. Kirk would probably say she whipped me, but we don’t listen to him or his pompous arse of a housemate much. We’re infinitely smarter than the two of them combined.”
Molly snorted out a small laugh and rolled onto her back, opening her eyes and staring at the ceiling.
“I had planned on killing Kirk when we landed on the USS Vengeance, you know. I had already planned on killing Marcus for what he did to my family, but Kirk was naive. He was a fop of common birth. But whatever it was his subordinate did when we were traveling between the Enterprise and the Vengeance, whatever he activated while we were in the debris field, it sent us here. I suppose Kirk’s second-in-command would save my family if he could, but I couldn’t save them. And I will regret that, but I would regret it more if I couldn’t save you and your mother.”
The smile melted slowly until it was a speculative look on her face, and she knew she was listening to a confession she wasn’t meant to hear. She loved Khan, she did, and she knew this, but this was a confession from a father to a child and now it felt less joyful to eavesdrop.
“Your mother is my saviour, really. I would do anything for her, even wake up to take care of you every time you make the slightest sound to let her get much-needed sleep. Even if she is eavesdropping on the baby monitor.” Molly sat up and saw Khan in the doorway with Edmund in his arms and the monitor balanced on top. “I thought you might want to kiss your son goodnight before I put him back down in the crib.”
“I didn’t mean to listen in,” she said as she got up and pressed a kiss to Edmund’s forehead. Then she leaned up and kissed the corner of Khan’s mouth. “I love you both so so much.”
“And I love you both very much as well,” he said, ducking his head down and kissing the top of her head. “No matter how violent my past was, I am a new man now. You have changed me, heart and soul.”
“I’m glad,” she said with a warm smile. “Go put Edmund to bed and I’ll show you just how much I love you.”
“I can’t wait,” he murmured, giving her a heated look before turning away and heading back to their son’s bedroom. She shivered in anticipation at what the evening would bring, and what would await her when he came back to their bed.
