Adrian couldn’t move.
It was past his curfew, his phone was dead, and his dads were going to kil him. But he still couldn’t move.
Anyone in his situation would simply head home as quickly as possible, as to avoid the awkward questions that would ensue after getting back from one’s girlfriend’s apartment. However, anyone else didn’t have Nova Artino’s head resting on his lap, sleeping peacefully. They’d been talking about how their day went, but he could tell that she felt exhausted. He’d started running his fingers through her hair, as he knew she liked it, and she eventually layed down on the couch, with her head on his lap. They kept talking until their conversation dissolved into silence, and the only thing Adrian could hear was Nova’s steady breathing.
His eyes started to close, and he knew that if he fell asleep, he’d be in trouble with his dads the next morning. Begrudgingly, he whispered, “Nova,” while brushing her hair away from her face. She didn’t stir. He ran the tip of his pinky over her cheek, smiling lightly. “Nova.”
Her eyes fluttered open, and she smiled when her eyes focused on Adrian.
“I have to go.” Adrian was still whispering even though Nova was awake, as if not to disturb the calm and quiet.
Nova’s small smile fell. “Stay? Just a few more minutes?” She sat up, straddling Adrian’s hips, resting her forehead on his shoulder.
“I don’t know if I should. I wouldn’t put it past my dads to show up here to drag me back home.” He chuckled. “I’ll see you tomorrow, alright?”
“Hmm...” Nova muttered. She lifted her head so that she was facing her boyfriend, their noses almost touching. He glanced at her lips briefly, and kissed her ever so softly, arms wrapping around her waist. She smiled against his lips, and kissed him harder. Now it was Adrian’s turn to smile against the kiss. He brought his hands up to her hair, and started to tangle his fingers in it, enjoying its softness. It had been a while since she last cut it, so it was barely past her shoulders. It wouldn’t be long until she cut it again, he thought, as he knew she preferred having it shorter. Her hands moved over his arms and shoulders, eventually settling over his shoulders. They broke the kiss, resting their foreheads against each other.
“You need to go, don’t you?”
“Unless you want one of my dads to burst though that door and demand some awkward explanation as to what we’re doing, then, yeah,” he kissed her quickly. “I’ll see you tomorrow morning, I promise.”
“Okay,” she said, her smile returning. She took a breath. “I love you, you know that, right?”
He knew it was hard for Nova to be vulnerable with other people, and because of this, her expressions of love and affection tended to be more subtle. He loved the reassuring glances, the short kisses, and light touches as much as he loved every ‘I love you’ they’d ever shared.
“I know. And I love you, too, Nova Artino.”
