Chapter Text

The first thing Maki noticed when she woke up was that her head was killing her, the second thing was that she was currently sleeping with a shirtless guy in a bed that was definitely not hers. Immediately she flipped the covers off them both, relieved to see that the rest of the stranger was clothed and that she still had hers on too, although the shirt she was wearing definitely wasn’t one she owned and seemed a bit too big on her. What the hell happened last night?

The stranger let out a groan, his hands moving around likely trying to find the blankets Maki had just tossed off them both. Were Maki not so lost on what happened the night prior she would have simply tucked the man in and left, but she needed answers. And she clearly needed to stop going to parties with Miu, but that could wait. Answers first! Sharply, she shoved the stranger, another groan emitting from him as his eyes finally opened, he yawned letting out a stretch before he faced Maki and gave her a lazy smile.

“G’morning, you sleep ok?” He asked casually, as if they weren't complete and utter strangers.

“Who are you?” Maki asked, her headache only worsening as she gestured to the room. “And where- where the hell am I?”

“Ok ok, first calm down,” the man said, scratching his messy purple hair before explaining. “You remember the party at all?” Maki shook her head no. “Yeah, you were pretty wasted. Ok, well first I’m Kaito and this is my room.”

His room? Maki moved away from him on the bed, grabbing a lamp off the bedside table and holding it threateningly. “Explain!”

“Oh jeez! You can put the lamp down Maki, I promise we-”

“How do you know my name!?” Maki barked, ready to smash this guy with the lamp if need be.

“You told me it last night! Ok before I continue, we didn’t do anything last night all right?” Kaito said holding up his arms. “You were way too trashed to even think about doing anything with!” Well, he didn’t sound like he was lying. And the only pain Maki felt was in her head and not anywhere else. She’d believe him, for now.

“So why am I in your room?” She asked, slowly beginning to put the lamp back, but staying near just in case she would need it.

“Well I offered to call you and Miu a cab but you both couldn’t remember where you lived so me and the other guy’s figured we’d let you crash for the night. Miu’s in the only guest room, I figured I’d give you my room and sleep on the couch."

“But why were you here with me?” Maki asked, her red eyes narrowing.

“Well I helped you up and you just kind of kept clinging to me, and when I finally got you to bed you wouldn’t let go. Figured it would be ok if I stayed,” Kaito said, his face flushing a bit at the memory. “It was kinda cute…”

“And your shirt,” Maki said, gesturing to Kaito’s body which was fairly well toned now that she had a good look at him, gah focus Maki! “Why aren’t you wearing it?”

“Cuz I gave it to you,” Kaito said gesturing back.

“Why?”

“Cuz you uh, you got puke on yours,” Kaito said scratching the back of his neck.

“Oh…” Well, now that was embarrassing now wasn’t it? “You’re not lying to me, are you?” Maki asked, both because she still wasn’t sure if she could totally trust this stranger, Kaito, and because she wanted to believe not even she would get so sloppily drunk she’d puke on herself.

“Scouts honor," Kaito said raising his hand. "If you want proof your shirt's in the bathroom,” Kaito said pointing to a closed white door. “You… made kind of a mess though.”

“Shit…” Shaking her head Maki stood up and moved to where he was pointing, peaking in, and quickly shutting the door. Yeah, he wasn’t lying. Well, great, not only had she threatened the cute guy who’d let her stay over in his own room, but she’d puked all over his bathroom. Great first impression Maki. “S-sorry,” Maki said, sitting back on the bed with a groan.

“Hey it’s fine,” Kaito said, slowly sliding to her side of the bed and carefully patting her back. “We’ve all done stupid things at parties before, so don’t worry.” He offered her a bright smile which did help quell some of Maki's guilt, didn’t do much for the hangover though as she clutched her head with both hands. “Hangover? Here I’ll getcha some painkillers.” Kaito said gently, standing and beginning to head out of the room.

“Could I trouble you for some black coffee too?” Maki asked, needing something to help wake her up and ward off the pain.

“No problem!” Kaito said giving Maki a thumbs up before he left her alone.

Now that it was just her Maki let herself fall back onto the bed with a soft thud, whatever mattress Kaito had it was pretty comfortable. Maybe before she left she could ask what brand he had? Or would that be too weird? Well, she’d already puked all over his bathroom so she couldn’t make things anymore worse than that. Letting herself relax a bit Maki decided to take the time she had to better understand her surroundings and try and remember the night prior. Miu had hounded her to go to some party, Miu then claimed she was being way too introverted and guilted her into doing shots together, and then the rest was a blur. Well, Miu had a higher alcohol tolerance than her so maybe Maki could question her when she woke up. She wanted to believe Kaito was being completely honest but still, you could never be too careful.

Speaking of his room was surprisingly… boyish. The room had a very obvious space theme to it the walls decorated in rocket ships and stars, the ceiling having those light-up stars on them, and the lamp Maki had been willing to use as a weapon earlier had the planets painted on the shade. Clearly, this Kaito guy had a thing for space, and now looking down even the shirt he lent her was space themed, purple with stars printed on. Well whatever, it was his room. And he’d forgiven her for messing up his bathroom, she could look past the space obsession.

After a few more minutes Kaito returned, one hand carefully holding two hot cups of coffee and the other with a bottle of painkillers.

“Here you are,” he said, handing her the steaming cup of black coffee and medicine before taking a seat by her side again. “Coffee as black the void!”

Maki let out a small chuckle before taking a careful sip. Once sure the drink wasn’t too hot she then took out a pair of Tylenol, swallowing them down with a larger gulp of coffee, and let out a content sigh. “Thanks.” She said simply.

“Seriously it’s no problem, last night wasn’t the first time I’ve thrown a party.”

“So, I’m not the first girl to end up in your bed,” Maki asked, chuckling when Kaito sputtered over his own cup of coffee, her laugh increasing as he started to cough. “Sorry!” Maki said, giving him a few slaps on the back to help him out.

“N-no it’s cool!” Kaito said, trying to sound as if he wasn’t dying to breathe at the moment. A few more coughs to clear his throat later he continued, “I mean technically you’re not but like, it’s the right thing to do? Wouldn’t do to have anyone who can’t even remember where they live walking around late at night.”

“Well thank you for letting myself and Miu crash for the night,” Maki said offering him a small smile.

“Hey anytime, any decent guy would have done the same,” he offered up his cup. “Cheers?” Their mugs clinked together before both went to finish their drinks. “Feeling better?”

“Yeah, headaches more manageable. I should probably check on Miu too and make sure she’s ok.”

“I actually peaked into the guest room, girl’s out completely cold but seemed she was fine.”

“Yeaaah,” Maki sighed. “Miu tends to just sleep off her hangovers. Probably won’t be up till noon. A bit troublesome considering she’s my ride home.”

“Hey if you need I don’t mind dropping you off at your place,” Kaito quickly offered. “If you actually remember where you live now.”

“I do now, thank you. I’ll consider it. But first I feel like I should help clean up that bathroom of yours before I go.”

“Heh, you know you said something like that last night. You were so distraught about making a mess, it was kind of cute,” Kaito said with a small laugh.

“Please tell me I didn’t start crying.” Maki had been told she could get a bit emotional when drunk.

“I’m afraid you did, but hey I was here to comfort you and get you to sleep. You ugh, had quite a ways of thanking me,” Kaito said his cheeks going red.

“I thought you said we didn’t do anything!”

“We didn’t! You offered but I refused, you still kissed me on the cheek though.”

“Oh… Did anything else happen between us?”

“Mm well I gave you my shirt and let you use the bathroom to get changed, then you came out and thanked me with the kiss, then you told me not to get a new shirt on since you liked me better with it off, then I told you it was time for bed and you just refused to let go. I meant to leave once you passed out but guess I fell asleep soon after.”

“I see, and that was it?” Maki asked, she wanted to be sure she had everything.

“... ok, I might have kissed you on the forehead. You just… you looked so cute and peaceful!” He sounded so guilty over something so innocent, Maki couldn’t help but let out a small snort. Yeah, this guy definitely couldn’t hide anything else if he did something bad. “Look I’m sorry ok?”

“It’s fine, since you didn’t get mad at me I won’t at you. Truce?”

“Truce,” Kaito said letting out a breath of relief. “But seriously I don’t mind helping you clean up the bathroom and getting your shirt washed before you go, I don’t have any plans for today.”

“If you insistent, though I think I might keep your shirt.”

“Why’s that?” Kaito asked quirking a brow.

“Because I think drunk me had a point, you do look better without it on.”

“O-oh,” Kaito said his face flushing again. “Well if sober and drunk Maki agree then who am I to displease either.” They both laughed, Kaito then asking Maki if she felt she could stomach anything for breakfast. She joined him in the kitchen for some toast and eggs, the two chatting casually the rest of the morning, even while they cleaned up the bathroom.

Finally, around noon, Miu rose just as Maki predicted. The blonde wanted to go home asap which meant it was time to say goodbye to Kaito. Dressed in her shirt from the night prior Maki was about the bid Kaito a farewell and maybe ask for his number when the man shoved the shirt she had borrowed to her with a piece of paper on top of it.

“So you can call me and let me know you got home safe,” Kaito explained before gesturing to the shirt. “And so I have a reason to come see you again.”

“You really don’t have to,” Maki said, ready to give him back his shirt before Kaito stopped her.

“I know but… I liked seeing you wear it, so I’m hoping to see you in it again.”

“O-oh.” It was Maki’s turn to blush now, but well with reasoning like that who was she to deny him. She hugged him goodbye, leaving with his number, shirt, and a satisfied smile.

They saw each other again the following Friday night, the workweek proving too busy for either to meet up. But when Kaito stopped by Maki’s apartment he was greeted with the pleasant sight of her wearing his shirt again as told him to come inside.
