Work Text:
The weekend was probably some of the most nerve-wrecking Hinata had ever experienced up to that point. That Friday after the practice match, Hinata had lied out his ass. He claimed that no, he wasn’t actually texting the only person they knew with that nickname, but actually, someone must’ve pranked him when he left his phone behind, during the game. Luckily, it was entirely believable. He was always leaving important stuff like that behind. To seal the deal, and get rid of any suspicion, he made a big show of ‘fixing’ the name to some random person he barely remembered from middle school.
Of course, having come up with such an impeccable cover story didn’t stop Hinata from worrying about being grilled anyways, so as soon as he hopped off the bus, he was the first to the locker room and the first to leave. He didn’t even stop to wait for Kageyama, he was that pressed about getting away. That brought him to this moment, the day of their date, staring nervously at the sliding doors of the gym, worrying his lip between his teeth. Originally planned for the day before, something had come up on Oikawa’s end, and they had to reschedule for the Friday right after. That was today, of course. It didn’t quite help his nerves.
His phone buzzed again. Grateful for even more stalling, he checked it.
Grand King🍆💦
Are you still worried about practice?
How did Oikawa always seem to text at the right moment?
You should know!!
I still can’t believe you gave yourself that nickname
Weren’t you the one who came up with it?
I was just adding ~pizazz~
I’m STILL embarrassed about it
You kept the name tho, right?
Hinata felt his face heat up. So what if he kept the embarrassing nickname? Feeling…some kind of way, he wanted to give Oikawa a taste of his own medicine.
It’s only because my senpai wrote it special for me
There wasn’t a further response. Hinata was often called a moron, and while even he could admit to being one sometimes, he hadn’t missed the way Oikawa seemed to react to being called senpai. Which shouldn’t have been that weird for the older boy, but clearly it had some effect, both during their…make-out, and after. Maybe Hinata had won this little battle of theirs. Smiling to himself, Hinata didn’t even realize someone was looking over his shoulder.
“Senpai, huh?” A cool voice said over him. Oh fuck, Hinata thought, a chill going down his spine. He scrambled to close his phone and put it in his bag. He turned to face whoever joined him.
“N-nothing’s weird about that!” He stuttered. His poor explanation didn’t impress Tsukishima. The taller blocker only rose an eyebrow.
“Oh? Then I suppose you blush like that when you talk to Daichi too?” He smirked.
Damn Tsukishima. Not only did he refer to their captain without proper respect, but he also called Hinata out.
“It’s cold.” Eager to escape the conversation, Hinata turned back to the doors of gym, willfully ignoring the way Tsukishima was chuckling behind him. Unfortunately, in his escape, Hinata literally didn’t realize he was escaping to the one place he didn’t want to be. Moron indeed, he thought morosely.
The sliding door slammed open, which Hinata thought was dramatic already, made worse by him opening his mouth:
“G-good afternoon!” He bowed. Why did he bow?! Even as he stood back up, he kept his eyes trained on the ground. He stepped into the gym, wishing he could feel excited to be there like usual. He was! It’s just…maybe keeping Oikawa such a secret was weighing on him more than he thought. Would his teammates really be so opposed to it? Maybe? It was hard to tell. On the one hand, he could imagine Tanaka and Nishinoya clapping his back, complaining about how unfair it was an underclassman got with someone before they did. On the other…would Kageyama refuse to set to him anymore? Would he get shut out? It was depressing to consider.
Suddenly, a hand was on his shoulder. “Hey, Hinata-san.”
Finally, the Hinata in question looked up. He met Suga’s passive eyes.
“Oh, hi Suga-san.”
“Come with me, we need to talk.” Oh god. How ominous! Hinata allowed himself to be steered towards the locker room. He could feel the casual stares of his teammates. Ugh. Uggggggh. Uggggggggggh.
The walk was slow, and Hinata’s acceptance of it slower. Maybe Suga was finally gonna confront him on what he probably saw Friday…..oh god, was he about to get the talk?
The door to the locker room opened. They stepped in. Suga closed the door. Suga then led Hinata towards one of the benches. They sat. Suga stared at him.
“Hinata.” Oh god this was really serious.
“Y-yes?”
“Do you,” Suga paused, his voice soft. “…want to tell me what happened after the practice game with Aoba?”
Hinata cringed, looking away towards the lockers themselves. “Not particularly.”
Neither spoke, for a moment. “You know, if anything did happen, you can always talk to me, or anyone else on the team, right?”
Hinata chose not to respond. His hands clenched around the hem of his shirt. He crushed his eyes tightly. C’mon, Suga-san, just say it!
“Did…Oikawa…do something?” Finally! But, why did Suga sound like that? Or, more accurately, what was he implying?
“Suga-san, that day-”
“You don’t have to tell me everything! I just want to know what happened, and then we can go talk to coach about it. This is really serious Hinata, don’t feel like you have to cover for Oikawa just because he’s a captain.”
Hinata blinked as he was cut off. His hands unclenched. Oh no. Oh no. Did Suga think…? Oh no. He was going to have to say something before this got out of hand.
Carefully, he turned his head to look at the setter. There was a decidedly concerned expression, but also a vibe of hesitation. Was Suga afraid of the answer? He took a deep breath.
“What…do you think happened?”
“I’m not sure, that’s why it’s so important for you to be able to talk about it,” Suga said gently.
Hinata groaned. He was really going to have to explain now. This was somehow way worse than the talk. However, instead of saying anything, he pulled aside the collar of his shirt, displaying the new bandage over his hickey. The old one got dirty after a mishap concerning his poor eating skills and he’d had to replace it. He ripped it off, wincing from both the sting of it and Suga’s gasp.
“This wasn’t from anything you were thinking,” he said immediately. “This was…mutual,” he said thinking back to how he’d overheard Oikawa describe their encounter.
There was a silence, then, “Huh?”
“Suga-san,” Hinata sighed. “Oikawa didn’t make me do anything I didn’t want to. If you saw us there, why not ask me then…?”
Now, finally, it was the setter’s turn to clam up. “Well I thought it was mutual, until you came back to the bus like you’d died! Or something! You looked so miserable, and refused to talk to anyone, I was concerned something had happened!”
“Even when I was outed for texting Oikawa on the bus?!”
“I thought that was part of what you were miserable about!”
Ah. So, it was just a series of misunderstandings. Hinata asked as much.
“Well, I suppose so,” Suga chuckled. Hinata joined. They met eyes, and suddenly, they were laughing up a storm. All that weekend, Suga thought something horrible had happened? Well, Hinata thought to himself, my behavior really didn’t help, did it?
“Suga-san, I promise, Oikawa didn’t do anything like that. In fact, he asked if he could do this.” Well. Okay, that part was technically not true, but Hinata was okay with the result. At least, it would reassure Suga that nothing bad happened. Speaking of:
“Oh good!” Suga was all smiles now. He clapped his hands together. “You do know how to use a condom, right?”
Eh? Eh? “Ehhhhhh?!”
“Hahaha, chibi-chan, you didn’t really say that!”
“Oh I can assure you I did.”
After Hinata’s…embarrassing conversation with Suga, he’d been allowed to participate in volleyball, normally. Well. There was of course the light teasing about being pulled away for a discussion, and more than a few looks of wonder about the result of it, but Suga covered for him. They had agreed to keep Hinata’s involvement with Oikawa between them, as long as Hinata promised to tell someone if something did happen. It wasn’t hard to promise Suga, but it was way harder to tell Oikawa about it long after practice. Texting didn’t seem right, and while a call was way personal, Hinata figured Oikawa would appreciate it more. After all, it wasn’t every day you were suspected of being untoward. At least today, Hinata had walked with Kageyama a bit before making up an excuse to take a longer way home, just to talk to Oikawa.
“Hey,” Oikawa said rather seriously.
“Yeah?”
“I just…” He trailed off. Hinata hummed, willing to wait for the rest of it. He imagined a hand running through that impossibly floofy hair. “You really…didn’t feel pressured, did you?” There, in Oikawa’s voice, was a tenor Hinata hadn’t thought the older boy was capable of. He’s really concerned about this.
With no one to show, Hinata frowned. “Why does everyone keep asking me that? Does no one think I enjoy stuff like that?” He huffed, puffing his cheeks out. Was he going to have to reassure everyone who found out? He better start practicing now. “I like kissing you.” Simple, straight to the point. His phone clicked as the line went dead. Huh?
Staring at his phone, Hinata was startled when the same contact he had just been talking with blinked up at him. He hurriedly tapped on it with his finger, precariously balancing his bike with his other hand.
“O-oikawa-senpai, why’d you hang up like that?”
“Chibi-chan, you can’t just say things like that!” Oikawa’s exasperated whine received well. Was he…embarrassed? Finally, at least Hinata wasn’t the only blushing mess in all this.
“It’s true though. I liked it. Anyways, we’ll have to pick better spots next time.”
Silence met him. For a moment, Hinata wondered if the call had been ended again.
“This is worse than Iwa-chan using mean nicknames on me.” Okay, Oikawa was definitely pouting. Hinata laughed, enjoying the role he was playing here. Of course, he could never say anything like…that out loud if Oikawa was in front of him, in person, but being able to speak plainly was nice.
“Well, I guess I’ll just have to out do you on our date~” The phone also seemed to carry sing-song voices well. Hinata blushed, remembering the date. Oh god. By openly flirting, had he incurred the wrath of the challenge gods?!?
Daily conversation with Oikawa kept Hinata walking on air for the rest of that week. Practice seemed to blur in front of him, and though he made his fair share of mistakes, his excitement for their date overrided any shame he would normally feel. Besides, Oikawa had promised to help him practice volleyball, hadn’t he? Whatever he messed up here, in his actual practice, he could definitely lean on the setter for help. The thought made him giddy.
Until, that is, he was staring up at the tall buildings of Aoba Johsai that Friday. Had the campus been this big the last time he was there? Why were there so many students? There was no way there was that many after school clubs, right? Nervousness took over him, leaving Hinata glancing around at the various students passing around him.
“Hey, are you lost, kid?” A cool voice called to him. Glancing to his left, a group of three girls were approaching him. The one closest to him was tall, with short blonde hair and glasses. Weirdly, Hinata felt like he was watching a female Tsukishima stare down at him.
“I didn’t think a middle schooler would just stand around like a lost puppy. Are you waiting for someone?” The girl next to not-Tsukishima asked him. This one was on her right, with a severely cut red bob. Okay, she didn’t resemble anyone he knew but-wait, middle schooler?!
Feeling his cheeks puffing in indignation he said, “I’m not a middle schooler! I’m a high schooler!”
“You still didn’t answer the question, what are you doing here?” The one on not-Tsukishima’s left had long brown hair, tied into two braids and a pair of oval glasses. “Are you spying on us, or something?”
Hinata struggled to come up with a cover story. There was no way he could tell these girls he was here for a date. Not-Tsukishima saw his struggle and pounced. Well, more like she took a slow walk around Hinata.
“Hmm…you’re in a sports uniform, aren’t you? Black and orange? Hey, Kimiko, doesn’t that remind of you of something?” Hinata felt his blood run cold. Idiot, he mentally chastised himself. He had decided to just wear his volleyball uniform (of course, with a jacket over top) so he wouldn’t have to waste any time changing when he got there. Obviously, it backfired.
“Well, I-“ Again, Hinata struggled to come up with a cover story. Why did he decide to wear the most obvious outfit?! Feeling way out of his element, Hinata tensed up as he prepared to dash away. Maybe Oikawa wouldn’t be too upset if he canceled?
“Oh, chibi-chan! There you are!” The gates of heaven opened and angels began singing. Turning to his right, Oikawa was sauntering up to them. Thank god! Salvation! He mouthed a quick ‘thank you’ to the setter as he came closer, however, Hinata wished he could take it back as Oikawa wrapped an arm around his waist.
“Is everything alright over here?” Oikawa asked pleasantly enough, but his smile looked plastic, and there was an edge in his voice. How much had he seen before stepping in?!
“Oh! Oikawa-senpai!” All three girls said at once, light blushes gracing all of them. Ah. They had crushes on him. He felt smug.
“Nice to see you girls, but if you’ll excuse us, we have something planned already, and I’d hate to keep you from your own plans,” Oikawa said, not even bothering to pretend it was nice. Hinata mentally chastised him too. There was no reason to be mean on his behalf. Before he could say anything about it, Oikawa began to pull him along, back the way he came. Hinata barely paid attention to the direction as he realized he was finally with Oikawa again, in person. Was it hot? His face felt hot.
Oikawa glanced down at him, slowing their walking to a stop. “Goodness chibi-chan, were you that excited to see me again? You look like a tomato.”
“N-no! It’s just…my jacket! Yeah, it’s hot, suddenly.” Hinata may be a great spiker, but man was he bad at cover stories.
The captain only laughed and began walking again. Wait, why was his arm still around him?! Was anyone looking?! Turning his head this way and that, Hinata felt grateful the students seemed to disappear by that point. Perhaps lots of people were just late leaving? Whatever the case, he breathed a sigh of relief as a familiar building came into view.
“Is it really alright for us to be practicing like this?” He asked suddenly. “I wouldn’t want to get you in trouble.”
Oikawa waved his concerns away. “It’s really no big deal. I had cleanup today and Iwa-chan is covering for me, even if I did have to promise to take it easy. We’ll be fine, what did you want to practice?”
Hinata caught that part about taking it easy. Wasn’t the whole point of volleyball giving it your all? “Hmm. Daichi-san is always telling me I have to practice more than just spiking…maybe I should practice receiving?” It was easy enough to do, maybe it would help keep Oikawa’s part of the deal?
The setter in question stared down at him for a moment, before leaning in closely. “Aw, I really wanted to toss to you,” he whispered. Hinata was caught in a trap, he realized suddenly. Without him noticing, Oikawa’s arm had tightened around his waist and his heels hit the back of a wall. There was no place to look but Oikawa’s eyes, but on some level, he didn’t mind. After all, this was the same person he’d let give him a hickey…and a bite mark.
Oikawa can’t upstage me like this! He thought confidently. Channeling a cool persona, Hinata stared defiantly at the setter. “T-there’s more than one way to toss around.” Dammit! I stuttered again!
Oikawa’s face blanked, that far away look coming into his eyes. It was the same face he made when Hinata distracted him by calling him senpai and when he mentioned safe sex. Feeling triumphant, Hinata wiggled out of his grasp.
“Let’s practice, shall we?”
Little Hinata definitely had the kind of stamina Oikawa could be jealous of. It wasn’t fair! How did such a little body hold so much energy? Oikawa had imagined that Hinata would tire after the first few practice receives, but then he wanted to practice spiking. And then serving. And then more receives! His appetite for volleyball was practically insatiable, Oikawa found.
It was mesmerizing. Hinata really was like a ball of sunshine, zipping to and froe around the court. Oikawa couldn’t match the strange pin-point accuracy Kageyama could, but at least Hinata seemed thrilled by his own way of serving, after all, chibi-chan was telling him as much as they did some cool down stretches.
“It’s like, when Kageyama tosses, it’s a ‘phew’ and I’m there ready to hit it! But when you toss it’s more of a ‘phwooosh’, like it was always meant to be where I am!”
Okay, Oikawa literally understood nothing about the metaphor, if you could call it that, but the difference seemed to matter to Hinata.
“Does he really just guess where your hand will be, and tosses it?”
An enthusiastic nod answered him before a voice did. “Yeah! It’s really cool, even though some people call it scary. I think they’re more jealous that I can just trust the toss every time.”
Something bitter filled Oikawa’s mouth. Every time? Not even Oikawa had that kind of trust with his teammates, not even Iwaizumi. When had little Tobio surpassed him? Was it really just because he met Hinata?
“Uh, Oikawa-senpai?”
How annoying. Even when Oikawa got to have Hinata all to himself like this, Kageyama was still stealing the show.
“Oikawa-senpai?”
What was he going to have to do to wipe Kageyama out? He thought the younger setter had made his grave when he left him behind in middle school, and now he was blossoming to become the kind of setter every spiker wished for. Even Hinata.
“Tooru?”
And that’s another thing-wait what the fuck. Oikawa felt his head snap involuntarily to Hinata. When had he looked away? Actually, more pressing, Hinata said his name.
“I-I hope you don’t mind, you just looked…dark, all of sudden.” Despite his obvious nervousness at addressing him by his first name, Hinata stepped forward, pressing into his personal space. He was pointedly looking away. “I know you and Kageyama don’t really get along, so I’m sorry if I brought up bad feelings.”
Oikawa stayed quiet for a moment. Here he was, practicing a mutually loved sport with an incredibly cute player, obsessing over someone else’s growth. Was he a moron, or what?
Sighing, he reached out and planted a hand over Hinata’s hair. “Don’t worry, Shouyo, you didn’t bring up anything I didn’t already know.” Besides, Hinata had already used his first name, why wouldn’t he return the favor?
“O-oh, I mean, I guess I just-“ Obviously, Hinata was embarrassed again at his own boldness. It was quite cute, watching Hinata flip between confidence and embarrassment. Somethings just seemed to slip out of his mouth and other times it looked like he chose to say such embarrassing things! Honestly, Hinata might actually be the death of him.
“Stop being so cute, chibi-chan. I might really kidnap you and enroll you here. Anyways, we need to get going so we can get to dinner.” He grabbed one of the volleyballs laying around them and tossed it expertly into the cart full of them. Hinata expressed surprise and attempted to copy him, only for his volleyball to bounce off the rim of the cart. Oikawa chuckled as Hinata stomped over to the ball and tried again, only to fail a second time. Oikawa laughed fully this time.
This was more or less how their clean up process went, friendly jabs and gentle riffing. At times, it was easy to forget they were on opposing teams. It was just that easy to get along. In many ways, it was a relief to see that whatever attraction drove them to make out in a bathroom stall wasn’t the only thing that tied them together. Not that Oikawa didn’t think Hinata had attractive qualities, but he liked that they had actual chemistry together.
Soon enough, the gym had been put up, and the two of them were walking side by side. The sun had set a while ago, and the streetlights lit up the sidewalks they traveled on.
“Where are we going, exactly? You never told me.”
“It’s a surprise chibi-chan!”
Hinata puffed his cheeks out and Oikawa gently poked one. “You do that a lot, you know? Actually, with your hair, it makes you look like a pufferfish.”
“H-hey! That’s not fair! I don’t even have anything to compare you to.” Hinata deflated, looking away from him. “B-Bakakawa.” Wait. Bakakawa?
“I don’t remember Iwa-chan telling you that one?”
“It’s because he didn’t! If you think I look like a pufferfish, then you’re a Bakakawa.” Again, he puffed his cheeks, only serving to increase the sentiment. Well. Bakakawa was new, but it was Hinata’s. Anyways, they finally came upon their destination.
The smells of the ramen stand was both savory and salty. There was soft music coming through from the stand, though it sounded a little crinkly. Maybe they needed a replacement speaker. The two of them parted the curtain and hopped up on the red seats. The chef, recognizing Oikawa, nodded at him and got started on his usual order.
“Ah, make it two bowls tonight, Chiazaki-san.” Chiazaki only nodded, being a man of few words. Oikawa turned to admire Hinata in the soft yellow light.
“Wow, no wonder I didn’t see this on the maps!” He gazed around the tiny kitchen with wide eyes.
“You tried figuring out where I was gonna take you?”
“Of course! I was excited, I wanted to guess where we would eat. I didn’t know there was a stall like this!”
Before Oikawa could say anything else, the two of them had large bowls thrusted before them. Oikawa realized at that point he hadn’t even asked if Hinata would like this type of ramen. Hinata stared down at the bowl and it gave Oikawa a growing sick feeling.
“Oh my god, Hinata, I’m sorry, I didn’t even ask if you wanted-“
“How did you know this was my favorite type of ramen?!”
Oikawa blinked. He pointed at himself. “It’s actually my favorite type of ramen.”
They stared at each other before breaking out into wide grins. Without much more to say, and the appetites they’d worked up from practice gnawing on them, they dug into their food.
Hinata moaned and Oikawa had to pause before he started choking. Beating back the thoughts were easier than the last time he had to, but if Hinata kept making that blissed out expression, it might get harder. He coughed and tucked into his noodles with more intensity than he would normally give them. Between bites, they glanced at each other. Oikawa blushed and looked away, feeling the need to whine when he heard Hinata giggle next to him.
“It’s your fault I can’t focus on my meal.”
“I’m sorry you’re so easily distracted.”
“I don’t think you really are,” Oikawa let himself pout. Hinata giggled again. That cheeky son of a…
He’d make sure to get at him later. Suddenly, a phone rang. It wasn’t his and he turned to Hinata, who hurriedly put the phone to his ear.
“Mom?” Oh? Oikawa slurped his noodles, trying not to overhear. It wasn’t as if he could even hear anything being said, but all the same it was the thought that counted.
“A-are you sure? Not until tomorrow? W-well, hold on,” Hinata pulled the phone from his face, holding his other hand over the speaker.
“My mom said the trains are down tonight and won’t be back up until tomorrow and,”
“Stay with me,” Oikawa made up his mind. “I mean, my parents aren’t gonna be there and at least you’d have a place to stay. I don’t mind, really,” Oikawa said earnestly.
Hinata smiled. “Okay then, I’ll tell my mom.” He raised his phone back to his mouth. “Hi mom, yeah, my friend is going to let me stay overnight. Don’t forget, I’ll be heading to the school again tomorrow. Yeah, I’ll be back for lunch. Okay…okay, I love you, bye.” He hung up. And seemed to refuse to look at Oikawa. While Hinata was talking, Oikawa paid for their dinner.
“Are you…okay with that?”
“What? Oh, I mean, yeah it’s just…” The spiker took a breath. “You paid for my dinner and now I’m staying at your house. It’s like we’re boyfriends…or something.” Oh, so that was it right? Looks like Oikawa hadn’t needed to try all that hard to embarrass him. The boyfriend word seemed a little early, but even Oikawa had to agree. It did seem like it was moving…kind of fast. Oh well.
“Then let’s head to my place, it’s not that far away!” He gently grasped Hinata’s hand and helped him off the seat. Without letting go, Oikawa lightly tugged Hinata along the direction of his house.
They made small talk, Hinata describing the day’s events at Karasuno, Oikawa making a cheeky comment every so often about his friends. It was the kind of easy back and forth Oikawa liked. There were no complicated expectations he felt he had to fulfill, and while he liked the intense volleyball player thing Hinata had on court, it was refreshing to have this version of the player. Finally, they happened upon Oikawa’s apartment. He shot a friendly smirk at Hinata before unlocking the door and ushering the younger boy inside, turning the lights on while he was at it.
“Oh wow,” Hinata said while taking in the place. Really, it wasn’t that impressive, but Oikawa felt a little embarrassed.
“Is it that cool?”
“Oh it’s just, it’s so modern,” Hinata gushed as he peered at the open kitchen, obviously spotting the fancy coffee press on the counter. “You said your parents wouldn’t be here, where are they?”
“They’re visiting some other relatives right now, and I couldn’t join because of school, you know how it is.” He coaxed Hinata’s jacket off him and hung up on the coat rack, before placing his on top. “You can have my sister’s old room tonight. There’s a shower down the hall, I’ll grab some clothes for you if you’re comfortable with that.”
Hinata finally turned to him, a soft look in his face. “You’re being super nice, I feel like you’ve done a lot for me today, and I just don’t know how I’d make it up to you.”
Oikawa paused, looking down at his recent love interest. “You know I’m not doing this because I want something in return, right?”
Hinata’s held tilted, his eyebrows slightly knitting. “No, no, I’m not trying to say anything like that! It’s more like…” he sighed, his hands coming together in front of him. “I don’t know if I can do the same for you.”
Oikawa smiled, though Hinata wasn’t looking at him to see it. “Hey,” he said quietly, reaching out to turn Hinata’s face towards him. “We don’t have to be give and take, whatever you want to do, even if it’s just to talk to me over text, is more than enough. I like spending time with you regardless, I don’t mind paying for dinner or offering you a place to stay. Even if it wasn’t a date, I’d still probably do it.”
“That’s one of the reasons I like you, Oikawa-san,” Hinata finally smiled wide, a twinkle of mischief in his eyes. Oikawa chuckled, letting his hand fall away, starting to move past Hinata to get things ready for bed.
“Oh? What’re the other reasons?” He tossed behind himself.
“Your hair is really nice, it always looks so soft and stylish.”
“You like my hair? I’ll let you know what products I use if you’d like.”
“Thank you.”
They finally made it to the hallway, Oikawa wanted to hear more from Hinata while he dug around for a spare towel and loofah in the closet. “Anything else you like about me, chibi-chan?”
“I…I like that you’re taller than me,” Hinata admitted softly. At this point, Oikawa wasn’t looking at Hinata, trying to pull out a stubborn towel, so he responded out of instinct.
“That’s not hard to achieve, chibi-chan.”
He blinked, and suddenly, his back was against the door. In front of him, or more like above him, Hinata’s face loomed over him. Somehow, Hinata had latched onto the top of the closet door, caging Oikawa against it.
“My height is a bit of a touchy subject, Oikawa-senpai,” he said lowly, forcing Oikawa to look up at him. “It’s not hard for me to remove any disadvantage you think that gives me.”
Oikawa felt his face heat up instantly. There was something about the way Hinata was looking down at him, completely reversing their roles from that fateful bathroom encounter. He wanted to speak, to say something, when Hinata started to lean down. Unfortunately, before Oikawa could lean his face (his lips) up, the door started to swing backwards.
“Shit!” Oikawa cursed as the door swung back. Hinata, surprised by this, lost his grip on the door and fell off it, landing immediately on top of Oikawa. Luckily, he caught Hinata before either of them got hurt, but unluckily, Oikawa started to lose his balance, and took a few uncertain steps, feeling himself start to lean heavily towards his left. In an attempt to overcorrect, he leaned his weight to the right, accidentally stepping wrong and falling forward into the wall. However, with holding Hinata the way he was, Hinata’s back hit the wall first, Oikawa’s body leaning heavily into him.
“Are you okay?” Oikawa asked, practically out of breath.
“Yeah,” Hinata responded quietly. Soon, both of them noticed what kind of position they landed themselves in. At some point, Hinata had wrapped his legs around Oikawa’s waist, his arms around the setter’s neck. Oikawa meanwhile wrapped his whole arms around Hinata’s slim waist, holding him quite closely.
Neither boy said anything for a moment, a little too wrapped up in their current position to think about breaking apart from each other. Oikawa watched with delight as Hinata’s intense gaze fell to his lips, then back up again. He swallowed once. Not because he was suddenly nervous, or anything like that. He was Tooru Oikawa, after all!
“I should probably let you down now,” he said lowly. He made no move to do so.
“Probably,” Hinata agreed. The spiker also made no further indication he would want to be moved. “Can…can you kiss me?” For once, or at least compared to the other time such a question was asked, Hinata didn’t look spacey or nervous. His gaze was trained on Oikawa’s lips, as if there were was nowhere else he would rather look.
“I’m surprised you even had to ask,” he responded before leaning ever so slightly down, taking advantage of their height difference once more, capturing Hinata’s lips. Oikawa almost wanted to sigh into it, but he held back, savoring instead the lingering saltiness of their dinner on the spiker’s lips. Like the last time, Hinata’s lips were soft and pliable, but unlike last time, he seemed more content to let Oikawa set the pace. Not one to look a gift horse in the face, he also held back greedily devouring Hinata, instead settling for a gentle swipe of his tongue over Hinata’s lower lip. The pace that had been set took a momentary pause, and Oikawa wondered if he had gone to far. Just before he was about to pull away to apologize, he was shocked as he felt Hinata’s lips slightly part, just before another tongue swiped across his lower lip. Surprised, Oikawa leaned back, noting with no small amount of satisfaction the dark blush that had blossomed on Hinata’s face.
However! Though it was the weekend, Oikawa was aware Hinata was having weekend practice the next morning, and it was already late as is. Gently, he set Hinata down on the ground, keeping his hands around the boy’s waist.
“I’d love to continue this, but we should probably get to bed, no reason to push for anything more tonight. Besides, I wouldn’t be a very good senpai if I made you stay up all night.” He patted Hinata’s head before finally breaking away from him. It was physically harder than it should have been, but there were things to be done.
“Are you fine with wearing some of my clothes to bed? You never really answered.”
“A-ah, yeah, that’s cool.” Hinata seemed distracted, for obvious reasons. Smirking, more for himself if anything, Oikawa grabbed his hand, leading him further down the hall.
“I’ll grab those clothes for you and leave them just outside the door. Holler if you need me or anything.” He set the towel and loofah he scrounged up into Hinata’s arms before opening the door and shooing him in. “And don’t worry about using all the hot water or anything, I’ll probably take a shower in the morning.”
“Thank you, again,” Hinata looked up at him, finally, as he started to close the door. Just before it shut, however…”Oikawa-senpai.” And the door shut with a click. Blinking back his surprise, Oikawa smiled at the closed door. He imagined what the morning would bring. Chibi-chan would walk in blearily while Oikawa was enjoying a morning tea, the shirt he provided engulfing his smaller frame. If he thought about it hard enough, he could pretend they were like, living together, or something.
Except, things rarely work out the way he thinks they will. That next morning, Hinata was a blur of orange and black as he raced out the door, having accidentally slept in. He almost didn’t even eat anything until Oikawa forcefully shoved an energy bar into his hands as he zoomed out the door. He did, however, text Hinata to make sure he got back home to his school safely, and whatever sudden anxiety he had about it, disappeared when he got a smiley face and a selfie of Hinata eating the bar as he ran. If he saved the photo, that was his business.
Oddly enough, Hinata never imagined a regular part of his school life would include frequent sleepovers with a boyfriend. After that first night, Hinata had schemed to go back over to Oikawa’s place, even just to hang out again. That chance finally came when Oikawa suggested a movie date, while his parents were still out visiting relatives days later. Hinata told his mom he’d be sleeping over at the same friend’s place, and if he pretended to be too tired to go back home after the movie, well, it was worth the stern look Oikawa gave him in the morning when he figured it out. Yeah, getting chewed out by someone you’re attracted to is kinda weird, but Oikawa made some good points about keeping his mom aware of their relationship.
When he went home the next day, Hinata told his mom a little bit about the guy he met during the volleyball match, and how they had gone on a date, and it was the same friend he was referring to when the trains broke down. Annoyed about her son keeping secrets, his mom demanded to meet Oikawa asap, and Hinata had to play messenger between them to get their schedules lined up.
What resulted was a three hour long lunch date between his mom and Oikawa, after which his mom gave the setter a full thumbs up, with permission to continue dating Hinata. Provided, Hinata didn’t sneak around anymore. Of course, being chewed out by both your mom and your new boyfriend was weird, but Hinata gladly took it, if it meant he could still hang out with Oikawa.
At some point, however, Hinata had begun to have a bad habit of leaving stuff around Oikawa’s place that he needed. A school book after a studying session, a comic book he borrowed from Nishinoya, even his phone once, all that kind of stuff would get left behind. Oikawa didn’t seem to mind, since he figured it was another excuse just to see him more often, but Hinata really was forgetting his stuff, and he played it off every time.
However, the last time Hinata slept over at Oikawa’s, it had been after a practice day that was especially grueling for him, barely making it through the home cooked meal Oikawa prepared for him. The morning after wasn’t much better, and with yet another club practice he needed to attend, he hardly noticed which jacket he picked up as he hurried to the morning trains.
So of course, when he walked into the gym that morning, tiredly greeting his teammates, he was confused as to why they were staring at him so intensely.
“What’s going on guys?”
“Uh, Hinata, what’re you wearing?” Tanaka asked, slowly raising a finger to point in his direction.
He frowned. “I’m wearing my…clothes?” He began to look down, noticing very quickly that his jacket was not normally this white. Oh no, he thought to himself.
“Is…is that…?” Someone started asking. Oh no indeed.
“Uh, this isn’t…it’s not what it looks like?”
“Is that…a captain’s number?” Someone said behind him. Oh why of all days did he have to beat Kageyama to the gym?! Slowly, like in a horror movie, he turned around to see his teammate glaring at him.
“Is that Oikawa’s jacket?”
This really wasn’t the way he wanted to tell his team, not by a longshot, but it was bound to come out eventually. He held his hands up and shrugged. “…Surprise?”
As the team erupted into noise (mostly questions automatically filtered out of Hinata’s mind), he had one thought. He was so fucked.
Somewhere, Oikawa sneezed as he folded up Hinata’s jacket neatly. If he had noticed his boyfriend grabbing the wrong jacket this morning, well, that was for him to know.
