Work Text:
Medda watched silently as the door opened and Jack slipped inside. She was about to say hello when he stopped and leaned back against the door, smiling in the dim light.
Medda smiled, knowing he hadn’t seen her yet. She knew exactly what had him smiling the way he was.
A couple hours earlier, Katherine had texted Medda, clearly a little worried, asking her if she knew where Jack was. Apparently, he hadn’t been replying to her texts for a few hours and wanted to make sure he was okay. Medda had told her that he was at his art studio (including where the studio was). She was sure that Katherine had gone to visit him and keep him company, and, seeing Jack’s reaction, suspected they might have kissed for the first time too.
After watching Jack for a few more moments, Medda cleared her throat, snapping him out of whatever daydream he had gotten lost in. He looked over at her, flushing bright red.
“Hey, Mama,” he said quietly, trying to fight off the dreamy smile.
“Hello Jack,” she replied, smiling. “Did Katherine go to visit you at your studio?”
Jack looked up at her, surprised. “Yeah. How’d you know?”
“I know a lot of things, baby. It’s part’a bein’ your mother,” Medda responded, smiling knowingly.
Jack laughed, letting his head drop back against the door. “That’s almost exactly what Kath said when I asked her how she found my studio,” he murmured, staring up at the ceiling. Medda watched him for a moment, amused, until his head snapped up to look at her, realization dawning across his face.
“You told her, didn’t you?”
Medda hummed, eyes sparkling. Jack groaned, pushing off of the door. “I shoulda known. That’s just like something you’d do,” he said, shaking his head
“Well, it worked out well for you, didn’t it?” Medda asked, watching Jack carefully.
Jack’s face flamed, and he turned away from Medda to hide his blush.
“Y-yeah…” he mumbled. Medda laughed, placing a hand on Jack’s shoulder.
“I’m glad,” Medda replied, “Anything more you wanna say about it?”
Somehow, Jack got redder.
“Not really…”
“Okay then, honey. I’m gonna go make dinner now,” Medda said, turning away.
“Okay, Mama.”
Medda smiled at the dreamy quality of his voice, shaking her head. She was glad he and Katherine were working out. It would be a shame if they ended so soon.
When Medda finished making dinner and called her kids down to eat, she laughed to herself when Smalls asked what Jack had been doing at the studio, and he replied awkwardly, the tips of his ears red.
Yeah, this relationship was gonna last.
