Work Text:

Moon scanned the room of children sleeping peacefully beneath his watch, soft music playing in the background. His sensors pick up movement in the back corner, slowly he makes his way over to the child, finding them sitting upright with a deep gasp when he finally reaches their side.

“M-m-moon?” The child sniffles, tears already threatening to fall.

“I am here.” He gently rests his hand against their back. “You woke up quite suddenly, little one.” He says softly. “Is something the matter?”

“I- I had a b-bad dream.” They whisper, wrapping their arms around the animatronic. “I d-don’t want to go back to sleep.” They bury their face against his casing, already gently warmed as his hand rubs lightly against their back.

“Shhh, it is alright, you do not have to sleep so soon.” He says, glad for his more delicate fingers letting him easily stroke their hair away from their face.

“Okay…” They relax against his casing, pulling the star covered blanket up around them. “…Moon… What do you do when you or Sunny have bad dreams?”

Moon chuckles softly, “Well… We talk to each other, usually one wakes the other when we have one.” It’s not a complete lie, whenever the combined caretakers have dark thoughts they do speak about them together, they just don’t dream. “Usually talking helps, but if we can’t make the bad thoughts go away, then we sprinkle dream dust.” He hums softly.

“Dream dust?” The little child blinks up at him curious now.

“Mhmm, it’s very special stuff you know, you have to use it when you really need a good dream.” He chuckles gently. “Would you like me to show you?”

They nod quickly. “Yes!” They gasp at speaking just a little louder but none of the other children wake. “S-sorry I mean yes, please.” They look up hopeful at him.

“Well, first you have to lay back down.” He almost chuckles again at how quick they are to scoot back onto the cot proper and get curled up, laying on their side. “Now… First I’m going to sprinkle some dream dust in your ear,” he gently rubs his fingers over them, “Now some over your eyes,” he does the motion again as he gently strokes their hair from their face with his other hand, “And finally allll over your pillow.” He makes a show of sprinkling something all around their head making them giggle. “Oh! And I almost forgot, some dream dust on this…” he produces their plushie which had fallen on the ground beside the bed, making a show of sprinkling the dust on the plush before handing it to them.

“That’s a lot of dream dust.” They hum softly, eyes already drifting towards closing.

“You have to have a lot. It’s very important.” He chuckles softly making sure they are all tucked in. “Now in order to have the dream dust work, you have to close your eyes and breathe in deeply.”

The child’s eyes finally shutter closed and they take a deep breath in.

“Now… Think of the happiest thoughts, and how many good dreams you’ll have… And count back from ten…” he lowers his voice further and further as the child slowly falls back asleep. Gently stroking their hair a few more times.

“Sweet dreams little one, none shall hurt you now.” He smiles as he slowly moves back to his place, watching over the sleeping children once again.
