When You're Home, I'm Home (Piano)

Summary:

In Keith’s first moments as a husband, he truly realized that home was not a place but a person. And his home wasn’t the house he retired to at the end of the day… His home was Lance.

During their first dance at their wedding, Keith was able to surprise Lance yet again with a piano version of their song. They had come a long way from the first time they heard it and danced to it, and would continue to grow as people together... But this was the start of forever.

Notes:

So legit guys, when this version dropped, I cried. I get goosebumps every time I listen to it, and I have to drop whatever I'm doing to sing along. This will likely be my wedding song when/if I ever get married. Obviously, I had to make it Klance and give them their happy beginning with my favourite song.

I'm not sure what else to say other than to please listen to the song while you're reading. You'll thank me later. <3

Work Text:

When You're Home, I'm Home (Piano)

In Keith’s first moments as a husband, he truly realized that home was not a place but a person. And his home wasn’t the house he retired to at the end of the day… His home was Lance.

His Lance. Who liked to listen to music loud enough to sing to when he did anything. Who would drag Keith into dancing with him whenever the mood struck. Who snored when he slept (and vehemently denied it). Who got this fond look in his eyes when he talked about something he was passionate about. Who always knew what Keith needed from him simply by looking at the set of his shoulders. The man who Keith loved more than life itself.

Today he wasn’t just Lance’s friend, boyfriend, lover or fiancé. He was Lance’s husband, and he hadn’t realized he could be prouder than he was at this moment. After spending the last five years together, someone on the outside looking in might think that they were simply going through the motions, doing what was expected of them after being together for so long…

But they weren’t. Oh god, they weren’t. Keith wasn’t sure he’d ever be as happy as he was standing beneath the altar with Lance, waiting to be declared husbands. Now he couldn’t wait for the next time he was this happy. Be it five minutes from now, five months or even five years, he’d gladly keep living for the next time his chest was so full of happiness that he felt ready to burst…

As long as Lance was at his side.

When the time came for the happy couple to have their first dance, Keith couldn’t contain his grin. He’d managed to convince Lance to let himself be surprised by their first song, promising that it wasn’t anything meme-y or cringy. He would never do that to him. But he did want this moment to be special.

As he offered his hand down to Lance, his love, his life, his husband, he couldn’t keep the smile off his face if he tried. “Ready?”

“Cautiously,” Lance admitted, laughing a little. “I have to say, the suspense over this has been killing me.”

Keith laughed a little too. How could he not? “I promise you’ll love it.”

“I hope so,” Lance accepted Keith’s hand and let him pull him up from his seat. “I’ll never forgive you if you rickroll me at our wedding.”

“That’s something I can see you doing more so than me.”

“Hey!”

Keith chuckled fondly and pressed a kiss to Lance’s cheek. “I love you,” he murmured against his skin.

Lance’s cheek heated up beneath his lips, but he leaned into the touch nonetheless. “Love you too,” he replied back, low enough that only the two of them could hear.

As Keith swept Lance out onto the floor, a piano intro started soft and slow, followed by a romantic violin and cello duo . Lance’s suspicion melted away to something more curious, and he cocked his head to listen to the music while Keith gathered him up in his arms and they started to sway.

It wasn’t until the gentle timbre of their favourite artist filled the room that Lance realized what the song was.

The ghosts that live in the walls… They watch us dance our living room waltz…

“Keith,” Lance whispered, emotion thickening his voice. “Is this--?”

“Yeah,” Keith cut in, leaning in to press a quick kiss to Lance’s forehead. “It’s our song.”

“Oh,” Lance bit harshly at his lip, tears already brightening his gaze. “Baby, this is perfect. I love you.”

“I love you too.” Keith kissed him again just because he could, hoping to taste the love threatening to escape from Lance’s chest. It was his favourite thing in the world. He was so proud to make his partner feel this way, to be responsible for the feelings overwhelming Lance’s being. He pulled him tighter to his chest as they swayed along to the lyrics.

Trust me to catch you and I’ll… I’ll dip you down.

Keith dipped Lance along to the words, smiling so wide it hurt when Lance laughed like that. When he pulled him up again, Lance’s hand wound confidently around Keith’s neck, playing with the little hairs that had escaped out of his braid. The words swirled around them as they danced, creating a bubble of time that nothing could penetrate.

It’s just you and I, the two of us starring in this show… We’ll never be alone.

“Do you remember when we moved in together?” Keith asked, spinning Lance out and away from him.

“Of course I do,” Lance said, spinning back to Keith’s chest. “You withheld this song from me for the opportune moment.”

“Withheld, huh?” Keith couldn’t help but laugh at Lance’s tone, though he couldn’t deny it. “That’s how you remember it, but I remember it as I flat out forgot until you asked me to put some music on.”

“I stand by my statement.”

“I’m sure you do.”

Lance laughed a little before mellowing out, a soft smile overtaking his features. “We’ve come a long way since then.”

Keith nodded, though he wasn’t fully sure what Lance meant.

“We’re husbands now,” Lance continued, leaning his forehead against his husband’s. “You’re stuck with me for the rest of our lives.”

“I should hope so!” Keith said seriously, a sly smile twisting his lips upwards. “I put a ring on it, just like Beyonce told me to.”

Lance laughed again, loud enough to echo through the venue. “How is it possible for me to love you and hate you at the same time?”

“You should be proud of me!” Keith exclaimed. “I quoted Beyonce for you. We both know before I met you that that never would have happened.”

“True enough,” Lance smiled, leaning up a bit to press a kiss to Keith’s lips. “I’ve corrupted you.”

“You have,” Keith murmured against Lance’s lips, actively trying to keep the kiss light. “But I knew what I was getting into and went willingly.”

The smile Lance smiled against Keith’s lips was nearly blinding, but Keith would have gladly been blinded by his husband’s happiness. He was helpless to do anything but smile in return, leaning into his embrace.

“I love you,” Keith whispered again, just because he could.

“I love you too,” Lance replied.

The best thing of all is only just started and I know… When you’re home, I’m home.
