Work Text:
Lucy sighed happily to herself after she got home from her latest job. Thinking to it was definitely one she would always remember.
She had gotten the final blow on a monster they were hired to take care of. All three of them- being her, Natsu, and Happy- were exhausted. They really should have brought at least Grey along for the job, but the reward wasn’t very large so Natsu had assumed the monster would be small and a piece of cake. It was not.
The monster had been as tall as the guild hall and covered in a tough, armored hide. Happy had ended up taking Natsu up to it’s head to keep it distracted with fire balls while Lucy and her spirits inflicted damage to the softer underbelly. The end finally came when Lucy was in her Cancer star dress and gave a fatal slice. She was sweaty, out of breath, and dirty from the fight. Staring at the fallen monster in relief she couldn’t help overhear Natsu sigh as he whispers to himself.
“God I love you…”
Lucy stiffened, slowly turning toward the man she called her best friend, eyes wide in shock.
“...what?” Lucy asked while staring at Natsu’s equally shocked and mildly panicked expression.
“Uh… w-well, I mean-” He wasn’t sure what to do. Natsu had wanted to tell her for a while, but things always seemed to get in his way- or he chickened out, not that he would ever admit that to anyone. He had wanted to try doing something romantic like those guys in those books she reads. Because even if he thought the roses and candle lit dinners were stupid and sounded like something Loke would do, she was special and deserved to be treated like it. But he had already fucked up so he supposed the only thing he could do was just go with it and hope for the best. “Of course I do Luce. It’s you.”
Lucy wasn’t sure how to respond. He looked …nervous. He just stood there, hands in his pockets, shoulders tense, looking very interested in his feet as he scuffed the ground. She couldn’t help walking the few steps till she was right in front of him, her arms crossed over her torso in a form of comfort as she caught his eyes. Her voice was soft and quiet, trying not to give away her hope that she wasn’t just misinterpreting his words. “Natsu, what do you mean by it’s me?”
“I mean.. you know, you’re my best friend, I’ve always thought you were special. You’re beautiful and brave and so nice to everyone. How could I not fall in love with you, weirdo.” There, it’s all out in the open now, Natsu thought. Just hope it was the right thing to say.
“Natsu you- you really love me?”
“Yeah, I really do…”
Next thing he knew Lucy was holding him by his face, kissing him. After the initial shock, he held her by the waist, pressing his lips against hers in a soft, slow kiss. Hoping it spoke of all his affections until breaking the kiss to press his forehead against hers.
Lucy was slowly tracing over the scar on his cheek, “I love you too Natsu” was all she was able to say. She felt like she was floating on a cloud, so happy to finally know that her feelings weren’t one sided. She could’ve stayed like that forever, if it weren’t for a certain blue cat snickering next to them with his paws covering his mouth.
“You looooooove each other!”
