Psychic Praise

Summary:

Sam lived a normal-ish childhood. Of course there were things that would happen here and there without a real explanation. However, if you left those out as well as his dreams, you would say he was a pretty average kid. Even though there was a lot of family drama behind closed doors. He lived with his Aunt Kate and Uncle Mike as well as his big brother after the accident involving his mother and father. Yet, when Sam turned thirteen years old, his older brother Dean had a big fight with their uncle and left. He hadn’t seen the other since.

Now, right when Sam was finishing up school, all of these weird dreams and unexplainable events started happening again. The worst time for his estranged and demented brother to show up just before his final interview for Law school. Unfortunately, Sam would never get to that last interview.

Notes:

Okay! So this is an idea I've had in my head for awhile and I needed it stored somewhere. I'll try to make a more official story in chapter two when I get a chance to write it. I'm still trying to figure out where I want to take the story based on this concept. I'm also going to continue to write my other fanfic "Into the Pit" along side it. Which means updates will be slower here.

Chapter 1: Background

Chapter Text

Unfortunately, there are things in this world that many do not understand. Many try to explore the concepts of what should be considered natural and what should be seen as abnormal, yet few know the truth. From how the world revolves around the sun and all the way down to how were the first humans created. Questions that have been answered, but most will not.

Well.

At least not publicly.

There are things out in the dark that would make people scream in terror and try and run away, while others who are brave enough to save those who flee. No one else knows this fact better than Samuel Winchester.

In the mainstream world, no one knew who Sam was. Besides his fiancé and close relatives. However, in the world of the abnormal and strange and unnatural, he was feared and respected. Some would say he was just a myth or modern legend. Yet, those who ever encountered him would say just how real he actually was.

Anything that could happen, go right, or go wrong around him, always did. He would be able to see premonitions of things to come. Either it be of good fortune, such as the winning lottery ticket numbers, or of someone's death, he would see it. Not only that, if he tried hard enough, he could move things just by thinking of it. An extremely powerful gift that many couldn't understand. Most didn't understand. Including himself.

How would you explain being able to pick up a crayon and draw on the ceiling at the ripe old age of four? No ladder in sight. Even though he couldn't explain it, it doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Maybe that's why his aunt and uncle were scared of him while he was young. Maybe that's why he was put into some psychological counseling for the first ten years of his life and watched in hospitals overnight for undisclosed extended periods of time.

They probably thought they were seeing things, or Sam was just really good at performing magic tricks. So who knows if they really believed in what was going on with their nephew. Sam at first thought it was all normal, but as he grew up, he realized how unique it was. But with all the counseling he received, he started to lose this ability.

Either way, he forgot about all of this strange phenomena once he turned thirteen years old. Having repressed the feeling of being abnormal and mentally blocking it out to a point he just couldn't remember what happened. Sure, every now and again he'll remember, but he'd just excuse it as a bad dream or a vivid thought.

No matter the case, he wouldn't be able to truly notice this gift until years down the line when he finally met his brother.

Well, re-met his brother after years of rumors that made Sam afraid to meet the other.

Now, we're getting ahead of ourselves.

Why did Sam live with his aunt and uncle? Who are they? Why were they the ones who put Sam into counseling? Why was his brother someone he hadn't seen in years? What were these rumors?

Back when Sam was two years old, he lived in a big house in the state of Kansas in the town Lawrence. The house was a two story building with lots of room to play around and make a mess of. One of Sam's favorite activities. There he had his older brother Dean who was around six years old at the time, as well as his parents. Mary and John Winchester.

They had a simple life. The typical family of four suburban lives. It was perfect and nothing could beat it. Dinner at the table each night. Loving parents who loved each other very much. Weekly lunches at the park. Dad comes home at five everyday. Mom cooking up a surprise dinner, cutting off the crust on sandwiches. The perfect family. Yet, that's when tragedy struck.

Sam couldn't remember the night, even if he wanted to. He was simply too young to form memories back then. From what he was told, there was a really bad rainstorm and the house flooded. The whole family was hurt in some way. Even had a scar on his left ankle to prove it, but the one who got it the worst was his father, John.

He had been under the water for a long time before the family was rescued, having exhausted all of his strength to keep his children out of the water. Sam was told that they were found after three days and Dean was the one carrying him while their father was unconscious and not breathing. Apparently Mary wasn't home for those few days, and was visiting some friends in another state.

After the family was saved, they were taken to a hospital, where their father was put into a medically induced coma to hopefully be brought back to a normal medical status without too many complications. In the meantime, Dean and Sam were dropped off at their aunt and uncle's home while their mom stayed with their dad until he recovered.

Funny thing is, this aunt and uncle weren't biologically family. They were simply people that their parents knew, and were willing to watch the kids for a few days until finances were taken care of and while Mary spent every moment in the hospital.

A few days turned into weeks which turned into a few months, and a few months turned into their entire childhood. One day, Mary and John both disappeared. Seemingly having run away together without being burdened down with children. There was zero trace of them back in the hospital, and no one saw them leave.

Thankfully, these two wonderful people took Sam and Dean in with open arms and formally adopted them both after a year of their parents disappearance.

To this day, the only way Sam even knows what they look like is by a photograph that he had of them in a family picture. Which he kept in his wallet to this day. A small part of him had a feeling that they didn't just run away to be rid of them. This picture was all the proof he needed to show that they were a loving family. However, he's just always been told that they left him, so why should he question it?

Minus all the strange stuff that happened around Sam when he was either angry and super excited, or the weird visions that he excused as very vivid daydreaming, Sam was a pretty average and normal kid.

He loved school and strived to get all the best grades. Had girlfriends and study partners. Played soccer and had tons of friends at any place he'd go. Had two very close friends while the others he just casually hung out with.

Sam Always had perfect attendance and high honor role to the schools that he went to, even from kindergarten and up, Sam was always academically driven. So much so, he was able to graduate a full year earlier than expected.

His aunt and uncle couldn't have been more proud of him. They threw the largest party on the block. Spent thousands of dollars on decorations. Even got him a cake that was in the shape of the high school mascot. They couldn't have been happier or feel so lucky.

But.

The same could not have been said for Sam's older brother.

Dean Winchester.

Although Dean never spoke about it, it was obvious that he remembered what happened that night. Sam could remember waking up whenever there was a storm out and seeing Dean in the same room watching him sleep. Or there were times Sam would catch Dean pacing the house at night, peeking out the windows and looking for something even though nothing has ever been there.

He was also taken into counseling, but Sam never knew what for. His big brother never spoke about it and his aunt and uncle sure as hell didn't either. So, Sam never asked. Just figured it was grief counseling or something like that.

Dean was a bit of a loner. He would disappear for days on end without any explanation on where he went. Never went out to hang out with people. He was always obsessed with stories that he'd read in the newspaper. So much so, he had a journal that he took everywhere he went filled with notes and clippings. Sam had tried to take a peak every now and then, just Dean would tell him to stop touching his stuff.

He was always a worrier. Most nights Sam noticed that his big brother wouldn't sleep for more than four hours a night. At times whenever Sam got a bruise, Dean threatened to kill the guy who hurt him. Even if it was just a bad fall during a soccer match.

Academic wise? The two couldn't be anything but different in that regard. Dean never took school seriously. Had to repeat a year or two of school as well. Even then he dropped out and got a GED.

Well.

As far as Sam knew.

There was a big fight. One between Dean and his Uncle that Sam couldn't remember the specifics to. All he knew was that there was consistent yelling. So loud he was able to hear it up in his bedroom while the fight took place down on the main level of the home. He could hear things being thrown and actual physical fighting occurred as well. Some choice words were said and Dean stormed out, and Sam never saw him again. This happened when  Sam was around thirteen years old.

The rumors around town started. Apparently, Dean had a troubled reputation. A lot of the rumors were true, others made sense, others made Sam question if he knew his brother as well as he thought he did.

Anything after that night was speculation.

Sam didn't know how to even get in contact with him. There were times where Sam would send out letters without an address just to believe that somehow Dean would get them. Like when he graduated high school, he sent out a letter to let Dean know, but he never showed up.

Either way, Sam moved on with his life. He stayed in contact with his aunt and uncle before going off to the college of his choice. Sam saw them as his own parents. Getting offered scholarships to attend. At the rate he was going, he wouldn't have any debt by the time he finished graduate school.

Law school.

During his undergrad, he met a girl named Jessica and they were madly in love. He felt this connection with her that he never felt anywhere else. There were no words to describe it. They're currently engaged.

It just seemed like everything was going perfect for him. All the puzzle pieces were falling perfectly into place. Except for the day when Sam woke up for his law school interview.

If he had the choice to go back in time.

It would be that day.

And if he could change anything?

He would not have gotten out of bed.
