Work Text:
Izuku Midoriya sat alone atop a rooftop during the late hours of the night. A night patrol for a man heartbroken and needing an escape from his own pain. He sat alone purely to reflect, to ponder just what it was that he could have done wrong even though he knows in his heart that maybe there was nothing he could have done.
Or maybe he was truly delusional, maybe he could have done more, maybe there wasn't enough he said. There could have been a lack of understanding, perhaps it was his own fault for absorbing himself in a job that gave him little to no free time.
But was it his fault? This job had been a dream of his since adolescence, it was his very calling and she knew that. She knew how much it meant to him, how much she meant to him, and yet regardless she felt as if he never cared.
But who decided that? Who decided for him that he wouldn't care about the relationship with the girl of his dreams? That he didn't care about her entirely? Who made that choice for him? Those words would never come out of his own mouth and she knew that.
She was hurt, and so was he. They fought, shouting whatever they could at one another until there was no more left to said, and instead of recollecting himself and talking it out with her he stormed off to be alone and gather his thoughts. His mind was clouded.
Was he in the wrong? Was it his own fault for having wants and needs? Was it her fault for the same very reason? No, there was no blame to place, they were both being moronic and he was sure she was aware of it too. There would always be fights between lovers, no two people would always see eye-to-eye.
Izuku sighed, running a hand through his hair as the crisp autumn wind blew past him. He shivered, feeling the terrible lack of his lover beside him. They frequented this rooftop together often during their lunch breaks while on patrol.
There were so many memories of her purple hair blowing in the wind as they talked, laughed, cried, and oh so much more. He gazed upon the city, spectating the beautiful lights that shined oh so bright. This view was one he wished he could share with her, a view they could share as he apologized profusely, but he was mad. He was hurt, and so was she.
How dare she imply that he didn't care about her. If anything, she was all that he cared about, and if his constant vocal reminder of that nearly everyday of their relationship hadn't proven that to her, then he wasn't sure what would.
Alas, once more his mind considered that maybe it was his fault. He had been working an awful lot lately, neglecting the girl who practically waited day and night for some form of proper consolation from him and it never came.
But why not tell him? Why not communicate her needs instead of letting it build up and make it seem like he never cared? He couldn't wrap his head around it. He couldn't understand just what could be done.
Izuku's face was shadowed by the mask of his costume, his mouth covered by the metal face guard that made him appear as the darker half of himself back when the city he was gazing upon was practically decimated. He sighed again, drooping his head downward as the mixture of guilt and regret washed over him.
Suddenly there was a small noise, a latch being undone before the creaking noise of the metal door leading up to the roof was opened. Izuku didn't even bother turning to figure out who it was, his danger sense wasn't going off so there was no real threat. If it was a guard he'd have to leave, that was the end of it.
"...I thought you'd be here." The person spoke. Izuku knew that voice and visibly flinched as he turned his head to see that the person was exactly who he expected. Kyouka Jirou, the very girl who he had an argument with hours ago.
There was a silence before Izuku turned his gaze back to the view of the city, hearing the footsteps of the purplette until they grew close enough to be right beside him, and sure enough there she was. She too sat on the edge of the building, her legs dangling in tandem with Izuku's as they sat in silence and watched over the beautiful city.
They sat there for awhile, neither saying a word, both clad in their hero attire as the couple had no idea what to say. Kyouka fiddled with her thumbs nervously, noting Izuku's appearance. He was obviously upset, and rightfully so after what had transpired between them.
She had constantly been waiting around for him to just give an ounce of consideration for her as she tried to gain his attention, but lately he was always too tired to sit and talk, or even be intimate with her. She did her best to make things less taxing on him, and yet all he did was work.
The final straw for her was when he told her that he was going to be working during one of her concerts. She had told him in advance of the event, they even planned to go out together in Tokyo, yet all their efforts were fruitless. She felt like he had forgotten about her, that he didn't care and it built up so much that she snapped.
The two yelled at each other, saying things that they never even knew they could think about one another, and hurting each other in ways unimaginable. That was the cost of fighting with someone you were so close with; they knew exactly what got under your skin.
But now as she shot a few passing glances at him all that anger from before had dissipated and all that was left was regret. Izuku hadn't been the one to throw insults, he hadn't been the one to try and hurt her. She didn't know why he was working so hard, but she knew he would have had his reasons, but to hide them from her and cancel on every plan they tried to make… It hurt more than anything he could have said. She even wondered if it was her that he was so tired of…
Kyouka balled her hands into fists, finding her resolve at that thought as she turned to face him. She tried to call for him, yet the voice that came out was so weak and afraid that she wasn't even sure if it was her own.
"Izuku," She called, watching as the greenette's head slowly turned towards her. She could see his green eyes shadowed by the hood of his costume. It hurt to see him in that state again.
"When did I say I stopped caring?" He asked simply, surprising the girl before the guilt began to set in. Of course he'd be upset by those comments, he made it a point to always tell her that he cared, that he loved her. That he wouldn't want anything else in the world other than her.
She forced back her tears, "I-I'm sorry-"
"Because I didn't." He interrupted, turning his head back towards the city, making the purplette lose the green hue of his eyes as the shadow of his hood began to hide them even more. "You don't get to decide when I do and don't, Kyouka."
She paused, waiting for him to continue, and when he never did she shakily responded, "H-How am I supposed to know when you hardly even talk to me…"
Izuku hummed, nodding in understanding before removing the hood that covered his face and staring the girl in the eyes with a painful smile. As he spoke, his tone was quiet and soft, yet the tears in the corners of his eyes gave away how he truly felt. Hurt. "...Just ask. I always care, I always want to know, I always, always, want to be there."
Kyouka looked away regrettably, sniffling due to a mixture of the cold air and her own sobs. "I-I was just… So afraid you didn't love me anymore. Th-That I was what you were tired of…"
"Kyouka…" He called softly, removing one of the gauntlets of his costume before reaching the newly freed hand out to caress her face, rubbing a tear away from her cheek with his thumb as he turned her head to face him. "Part of having a relationship is learning how to be there to show up your best for the other person. Tell me if I'm doing something wrong." He expressed as his own tone wavered as tears began to stream down his face as well. "If I'm doing something wrong tell me because that means you love me… That means I matter to you…"
Kyouka then began to realize just what he was implying; she understood why he was hurt, and she understood what he was trying to say. Communication was key, how could she have forgotten one of the simplest rules of being in a relationship with someone you love.
"I'm sorry… I'm so sorry, Izuku. You do matter, I was so afraid of losing you that-" She tried to explain but was swiftly cut off by Izuku's lips crashing against her own. This was a feeling that they both missed so much, and couldn't help but release everything as it was returned to them. They didn't need anymore words, there was no need to try and explain anything, they could understand each other with their actions. The love was still there.
As the two eventually split apart from their osculation, they scooted closer to one another, warming each other up with an embrace that needed to last a lifetime. They sat in a more comfortable silence, both of them just enjoying the view, and the moment. It wasn't going to fix everything all at once, but it would begin the process of repairing the damage so they could move on.
"I'm sorry too…" Izuku spoke suddenly, realizing that he too needed to apologize for his behavior. He was not immune to his own wrongdoings, and truth be told it was his decision that started all of this. "I started working more because I… There has been something I've been meaning to do for some time now."
Kyouka sniffed, moving herself closer to the man's body for warmth, "What do you mean? Is it something important?"
Izuku smiled, rummaging through the utility belt of his costume suddenly as he nodded. "You could say that… It's been on my mind for a while."
Kyouka gasped as Izuku pulled out a small red box and held it in front of her. She sat up from leaning on his shoulder and stared at the greenette with wide eyes almost as if her heart stopped.
"Y-You…"
"I was gonna do this whole big thing during your concert, but because of how I set up my work schedule it wasn't going to work out… So I guess tonight is better than nothing, but…" Izuku started, pausing as he looked down reflectively. He was aware of what had just happened between the two, if there was still some doubt in her mind he didn't want her to feel pressure to say yes. He hurt her, even if it was for a good cause. "...You don't have to give your answer now."
Kyouka shook her, placing a hand over the box as she looked her lover in the eyes and smiled as tears began to build up in her eyes again. "No… No, this is perfect. You already know the answer is yes."
The two shared another kiss, enjoying the moment of learning and maturing as a couple before they inevitably decided to head home now as an engaged couple.
Their minds no longer clouded.
