Work Text:
“senior wei, be honest with us” jingyi whines, “when did you start liking hanguang jun?”
wangji pauses. he had just finished a meeting with his uncle, since his brother, xichen, was still in seclusion. he had promised to meet wuxian for lunch and he knew he’d find him by the bunnies. wuxian liked to spend his free time there, sometimes taking naps.
he could hear wuxian splutter and try to think of how to respond to that. while they had been spending almost everyday together since wuxian had returned from his year long travels, even sharing his bed, they hadn’t done or said anything yet and wangji had always been patient and he knew eavesdropping was forbidden but he couldn’t help himself. he could admit that he wasn’t just curious but scared … what did his wei ying feel for him?
“jingyi!” sizhui groans, “that’s not appropriate!”
“come on” jingyi scoffs, “you can’t deny that you’re just as curious about it as i am”
when sizhui doesn’t answer, wuxian sighs.
“i think … from the moment i met him” wuxian says and wangji pauses again, holding his breath
“actually no!” and he can hear the pout without having to see wuxian’s face, “he didn’t let me in at first”
this causes jingyi to giggle and he knows, sizhui is trying not to laugh. he can’t help his own smile, remembering their first meeting. wuxian has always been so beautiful to him, even if this body wasn’t his own. he was still wei ying..
“i think… i’ve always had feeling for him” wuxian tries again, “i just didn’t understand how i felt back then and so much happened and it felt too far out of reach”
“what about now?” he’s not surprised that it’s sizhui asking that. sizhui had asked him how he felt about wei ying many times and he’s answers had always been the same…
“now?” wuxian asks and his voice is uncharacteristically soft, “my feelings haven’t changed, i’ve just learned to accept them because i understand better”
it’s quiet for a while and wangji thinks that maybe jingyi is just as shocked by that as he is. he feels like now would be the appropriate time to save the situation because he could understand the longing in wei ying’s voice and he didn’t want him to feel uncomfortable that he’d run away again.
he makes a noise by moving his robes as he steps forward.
“h-hanguang jun!” jingyi bows and sizhui follows right after
“lan zhan!” wuxian grins, smiling brightly at him
“have you just finished your meeting?” wuxian asks
“mn”
sizhui, knowing when to read the room, tells jingyi that they still have things to do and bows quickly before pulling him back towards the classes.
wuxian stands up from where he was leaning against the tree and dusts his robes.
when he looks up again, his eyes are soft and his smile is small. it’s almost shy
“how much of that did you hear?” he asks
“…”
“lan zhan i-”
“wei ying, i love you”
“what- lan zhan, you-”
“always have” he says, “always will”
he’s prepared for an armful of wuxian, who wraps his arms tightly around his neck. he rubs his back gently and lets wuxian cry as much as he needs to. he knows that wuxian tends to get in his own head too much.
“lan zhan” wuxian whispers as he slowly pulls back, just enough to look up into wangji’s eyes. he knows his eyes are probably red and glassy but wangji finds wuxian so beautiful in this moment that he leans down and kisses the corner of his mouth
“lan zhan!” wuxian pouts and this time wangji grins, before leaning down again to kiss him properly and wuxian melts against him, sighing softly.
“i love you” wuxian says softly, against his lips like it’s a secret, “i love you so much”
this was his home.
