Work Text:
Nobody on his team knew how he managed it. He didn’t seem interested in anything at all...always so deadpan and wanting to stay out of everything. Yet Rintarō managed to find himself a girlfriend. One that even seemed to make Atsuma jealous.
(First Name) (Last Name) was smart, funny, personable, and sweet.
Top of their year.
Always had nice things to say...unless you got on her nerves...then had a snark file that was said to rival the twins' vile repertoire for each other.
But she generally got along with everyone.
Especially Rintarō.
They seemed to communicate on a completely different level. She seemed to be able to read his deadpan expression for any and everything he could be feeling or thinking. And always had a smile on her face when she was with him. And she loved to spoil him with thoughtful gifts and creative date ideas.
Especially for his birthday.
But this year things got all mixed up...and she didn’t know what to do. (Name) had just started taking ballroom dance classes as a form of exercise in a creative way. She loved the way she felt when she danced. And it made her feel good when she got a particular move or step right. And her class not only got moved to the 25th that week, her boyfriend’s birthday, it was pushed back in the day to 6 PM, the time of the movie she was planning on taking him to as a surprise, he’d been looking forward to it and opening day...his birthday no less...it was sold out, all day, the last two tickets just happened to be sold to his girlfriend without his knowledge.
But now she had to choose between the dance lessons she adored and seeing that movie with her boyfriend.
While to others it shouldn’t be that hard of a decision...he encouraged, practically insisted for her to still go even though it was his birthday.
“We can just go out to dinner or whatever after. Just because it’s my birthday doesn’t mean that the whole world stops to worship the ground I walk on.”
She had laughed and shook her head saying she would figure it out. So she decided he was right and called the theater to transfer the tickets to the next day if possible or just get a refund, they had gladly transferred the tickets for her, except for the next weekend as the whole WEEKEND was completely sold out. But then came one more issue...her usual partner for these lessons had dropped out of the class and she was now without one for that class as well as as many upcoming classes as it took to get a new student.
She was lamenting the issue to a friend of hers that day, without mentioning what the gift had been so word of her plans and now second gift didn’t get back to her boyfriend and in turn ruin the surprise; but he had heard her lamenting of the ruined plans for a class she couldn’t even properly take now without a partner. And he came up with an idea she was stunned that her volleyball jock, laissez faire boyfriend would agree to let alone come up with!
Which led them here. The pair of them in casual attire standing in a dance studio across from each other. The teacher even offered him the one class at a deep discount of half off for him to be her partner for the night so she didn’t lose out on a class she had already paid for. His face deadpan as usual but (Name) knew Rintarō, she could read him well, he was nervous, a bit uncomfortable. He never thought of dancing in any way himself...and here he was in a ballroom dancing class, on his birthday, just so he could help out his girlfriend...well...it also was a good excuse to spend more time with her on this most special of days.
He set his hand on her waist and took her other hand as they got into position to begin their waltz.
“Just think of it as team drills.” She teased her jock boyfriend.
He rolled his eyes but she saw his deadpan crack just a bit for a small smirk to appear on his lips.
“Ready and…” the teacher announced and the class began.

An hour and a half later (Name) and Rintaro were at their favorite street food vendor outside the mall getting a snack and something to drink. She smiled at him and he actually cracked one at her.
“You had fun.” She teased.
“Yeah I did.” He admitted, “I guess...it was something different...less stressful than volleyball...and I get to be close to you the entire time.” She blushed at his teasing her.
“Yeah. I have to admit that part was nice.” She nodded, “Having my boyfriend as my dance partner made it feel more special and a lot more fun.”
He laughed, “Maybe I’ll take the occasional class with you again…” he suggested.
“Why?” She asked.
“Well...it was fun, it was like a different kind of exercise...and it’s just more time to be together with you...and it’s easier to say I have an after school class to a coach than I want to leave on time to see my girlfriend.” He joked.
She laughed and pecked his cheek. “Clever. Clever.”
He just shook his head, but that smile on her lips strengthened that resolve all the more.
(Name) smiled, she’d give him the movie tickets later, right now she just wanted to enjoy the early evening with him.
“Happy birthday Rintaro.” She murmured and pecked his lips.
All he could do was smile.
