(Name) laughed as she dragged her boyfriend along. It was his birthday and she was really excited that she had finally got him to take some time off of work. It was only a day, but it was enough. She smiled at him and pecked his cheek as they waited at the train station. She was so excited. They were going to the country for the day. They would be staying the night at this lovely bed and breakfast she had found for the pair of them.
Shizuo always said he wanted to just live a peaceful life, so she wanted to give him a peaceful day.
Especially one without the major risk of that prick Izaya showing up and ruining things like he had for their last three major dates.
New Years, when they went to a party her friend was having and on the way home after cheering in the new year with a perfect kiss at midnight he showed up almost on queue as they were talking about how they would spend the next day together relaxing and taunted her boyfriend of two years into a major event…
His own way of ringing in the New Year it seemed.
Valentines Day he showed up at the restaurant they were at for a ‘dinner’ of his own and loudly talking shit about her boyfriend to the ladies he had invited out...not using his name but (Name) and Shizuo both knew whom he was referring to. Shizuo did his best to keep his cool and yet Izaya decided he could get away with insulting ‘that bimbo he happens to be dating’ and Shizuo lost it. Shizuo could be okay with insults lobbied at him for the most part now...but (Name) was off limits.
Happy Valentine's Day.
And the worst by far was her last birthday. She and Shizuo had decided to stay in and relax together at her place. He had been there most of the day, but had stepped out for a moment to go and pick up their dinner rather than have it delivered. The cafe they wanted to get dinner from didn’t offer take out. So when there was a knock on her door she assumed his hands were a touch too full to both unlock and open the door. She hurried to open it and instead of her beloved blond boyfriend standing there laden with their favorite food...it was said boyfriend’s brunett rival. She tried to slam the door in his face but he prevented her from doing so and pushed his way in. He didn’t have any physically nefarious plans for her. It wasn’t an assault of any kind. He didn’t lay a hand on her. He merely flopped down on her couch, feet on her table, and began to play with his pocket knife while humming ‘Happy Birthday to You’. She tried to get him to leave...he just ignored her.
It was a shit show when Shizuo got home. They got into a fist fight in her den. Broke some of her furniture because no matter what Izaya wouldn’t leave until (Name) was in tears, because the only photo she had left of her family saved from the house fire which took them from her, had fallen off the wall and been stepped on by said brunette in the brawl. He just left with a smirk on his face, leaving Shizuo there to pick up the pieces of her broken day. It seemed due to her proximity to the blonde she now became part of his game when it came to tormenting her boyfriend...but this wasn’t about Shizuo...this event had been about her.
Happy freaking birthday.
She moved after that. She didn’t feel safe in her apartment after that.
So this year she wasn’t taking chances. She had researched this in physical brochures and booked this place in person when she had the day off last month. She wasn’t taking chances with how tech savvy that bastard was. She and Shizuo would not have another special day ruined by Izaya.
And finally they were off. She was leaning against his shoulder and smiling as the scenery turned from cityscape to fields of snow and ice filled trees. The couple both felt a weight being lifted off their shoulder as they rolled along.
“I have to admit...this is a great idea.” Shizuo said.
“I’m glad you like it. I know it’s not usually the type of birthday date or day trip one plans for a guy...but...I know you well enough to know that you would just like to have a day to relax. And what better way than delicious food, a quiet country night, and a day to just...be.” She said.
He kissed her nose.
“You’re one of a kind, babe.” He said.
“And all yours.” She assured him with a kiss.
They knew that the next day they would return to Ikebukero and their lives...and the risk of Izaya. But for this one day and night...they could escape and enjoy some proper peace and quiet.
