Work Text:

Cale feels hungry.

It's midnight and everyone has gone to bed. So does the average 9-year-old. Seeing the children sleeping in their dreams with their steady breathing, Cale gently got off the bed and headed straight for the kitchen. Beacrox and Ron were both out of town due to unexpected work, so he couldn't ask them.

Opening the kitchen door gently, Cale walked down the stairs trying to make as little noise as possible. He didn't want people to wake up just because he was hungry. Remember before leaving Beacrox told that no one should step foot in the kitchen without him at home.

'I'll get something light to eat and get out of here quickly'

With his hand lightly rubbing on his stomach, Cale opened the door of the cupboard where the bread and dry ingredients were kept.

'Looks we've run out of bread'

Only a few bags of flour and a few spices left in the cupboard. He opened another drawer, there was some apple jam and strawberry jam. With the shortage of bread, Cale couldn't make simple jam bread. There were still some apples and tropical fruit on a nearby table. He picked up an apple and took a bite. The apple was quickly eaten, but Cale was still not satisfied.

He looked around. There were still some vegetables like potatoes and carrots in the sacks by the stairs as well as a few bags of peas.

Cale frowned slightly.

Looks like he just have to make some late-night snacks to satisfy his stomach.

Cale took two potatoes and carrots, started to wash them, peeled and cut them into small cubes. The peas don't need much processing, so Cale just rinsed and drained it. He took the pot and boiled the water, adding the ingredients one by one. A little finely chopped onion, some bay leaf, a little bit of honey, salt, pepper, rosemary,... Gradually Cale's eye-catching soup pot was formed, bringing out the delicate scent that spread throughout the kitchen.

Sitting down at the table, with a bowl of soup he had just made in his hand, Cale couldn't help but taste his own finished product. Cale knew how to cook. He read various recipe books while back in Korea and also made his own food. But with the conditions at that time, cooking ingredients were a luxury.

'Hmm. Doesn't seem bad for the first time'

This was Cale's first time cooking this kind of soup. And the results are better than expected. The soup is light, not too salty, quite tasty. He scooped up a spoonful of vegetables, put it in his mouth, and ate it deliciously. The sweetness of vegetables and broth spread throughout the mouth. His cheeks were puffy, slightly pink from the warmth of the soup.

It was a pitch black night, speckled with a few stars. A quiet night. Moonlight shining through the window makes the kitchen more cozy and peaceful.

*BAM*

"HUMANNNN"
"Meoooow"
"Caleee"

Cale looked at the open door in surprise. Raon, On and Hong were all standing there. Four pairs of eyes looked at each other.

"Human. Why are you eating at this hour? That's not good for your health!"
"Meow. We couldn't see you so we had to look for you!"
"Cale is so excessive. Why are you eating alone like this!"

Cale blankly stared at the children.

"I'm hungry"

When the children heard that, they made a fuss.

"Then why don't you wake us up. We want to eat too."
"Human, I still have some apple pie. The apple pie is delicious. Let's eat it!"
"Meow I can smell something good!"

The children turned their eyes to the nearby pot of soup. Since it had just finished cooking, the steam could still be seen. The faint scent could not help but make the children crave.

"Did you just cook?"
"Cale you know how to cook? I want to try it!"
"Me too! Food cooked by you is sure to be delicious!"

After saying that, the kids ran up to Cale and looked at him with sparkling pleading eyes. Cale giggled lightly, spooning each of them a bowl. The children's eyes seemed to light up, quickly picked up the spoon and ate.

"Human! This soup is delicious! It's unlike the soups Beacrox makes, but it's delicious! I love it!"
"Meow it is so delicious"
"I love it too meow! It's so tasty and special."

Cale smiled, his face slightly pink. He felt so warm. Maybe it's because of the soup. Maybe it's because of the kids' praise. No matter what, tonight was going to be a memorable night for Cale.

'Hopefully Beacrox won't find out about this tomorrow morning'

Notes:
