Work Text:
The cold autumn leaves crunched beneath Jamie’s boots as they walked back to the house. The sky was cloudy, probably on the cusp of a light shower. A light mist had settled over the area, but it was just bright enough to not be too spooky. It was still quite early in the morning, but Jamie was already awake and didn’t want to disturb their husband just yet. He’d had a long day at the clinic yesterday, and no matter how much he protested, he definitely needed his rest.
Despite being fairly bundled up already, Jamie shivered in the cold. Winter was making itself abundantly clear that it was right around the corner, and it was pulling no punches. They sat on the porch, watching their breath. It was quite peaceful.
They heard the door open behind them as their cat rushed past them to sit next to a pile of leaves and stare into space. They watched in amusement before noticing heat radiating next to their face. They turned to see Harvey, offering them a mug while giving them a tired yet warm smile. He must have just woken up.
“Hey hon, sorry if I woke you.” They said, gratefully taking the mug as Harvey sat next to them.
“That’s quite alright,” He chuckled, taking a sip of coffee from his iconic patterned mug, “I’m a light sleeper anyway.”
Jamie knew that wasn’t true in the slightest, as Harvey had slept through several movies the two of them had watched together recently, but they laughed it off.
“Yeah okay, and I actually like coffee.” They retorted, taking a sip of their sweet hot chocolate. Harvey always made the best hot chocolate.
“Wow! Low blow Jamie! I can’t believe this.” He replied, a jokingly hurt expression on his face and Jamie choked back laughter.
“It’s so bitter! I’ll never understand how you drink that concoction.”
The two of them laughed together, barely avoiding spilling their drinks. Jamie’s cheeks warmed at the sight of Harvey so cheerful. He’d been so stressed lately, so to see him this happy was definitely a relief.
Jamie yawned, watching their cat half-heartedly pawing at a leaf.
“You sure you don’t wanna go back to bed? It’s not too late to at least take a nap.” Harvey offered, clearly more awake than when he’d joined them on the porch.
“Nah, I got work to do later anyway.” They smiled, drinking some more hot chocolate. They still had to harvest the last few crops before winter finally settled, plus they hadn’t checked on the fruit bats in a while.
“If you’re sure... Just don’t overwork yourself today, okay?” Harvey cautioned, giving them a concerned look.
“Don’t worry, I’ll be fine! Besides, soon enough we’ll have all winter to just chill together.”
“Mm I see what you did there, very clever. I’m gonna make us some breakfast.” Harvey stood up, barely hiding his smile at Jamie’s very bad joke.
“Ooh, what’s on the menu?” Jamie stood up as well, closely followed by their cat who delicately sprinted inside as soon as Harvey opened the door.
“We’ll just have to figure that out together I suppose.”
The two of them spent the rest of the morning enjoying a nice omelette in their cozy little home, with nothing but the sound of rain and each other’s voices filling the air.
