Chapter 1: Before

Chapter Text

25 years earlier.

Paul pulled out his EMF meter as his team of researchers neared the point of impact. The device was whirring like crazy, the numbers on the display changing erratically from normal levels to thousands of MHz. They’d seen an extreme surge in the magnetic fields surrounding their current location from their lab in New Mexico and Kingdom had ordered a team of scientists led by Paul to go and investigate what happened.
Paul took in his surroundings, looking for anything out of the ordinary. They really should be near the site now, but the vegetation made it impossible to see further up the mountain. He wondered what they would find that could cause such a disturbance to the magnetic fields and was glad that he didn’t have his debit card on him; the thing would probably be fried now. A sudden shout distracted him from his thoughts. He rushed over to Ruben, who was standing at the edge of a huge clearing. The clearing was completely barren, the vegetation had all burnt to ashes and the air smelled of ozone. In the middle of the clearing was a crater, and within that was a… Baby?
Paul stepped into the clearing, ignoring the warnings that Ruben and the other scientists yelled behind him. As he walked up towards the baby, he could vaguely start to make out their features. They had vibrant blue hair with some smaller patches of yellow, and their eyes were a warm shade of brown- wait.. blue? The feeling that something was very, very wrong crept upon him and his instincts were yelling at him to run, but he was frozen in place. The baby finally seemed to notice him and turned to look at him with blazing blue eyes, electric sparks flying from them. As soon as their eyes locked, the baby’s eyes turned back to their original warm brown hue, and they- she, he now noticed as he took in her lack of clothes- grinned at him, stretching out her arms. Paul wasn’t too sure what to do- this baby obviously had supernatural powers, and yet… it also seemed to still be a baby. Had someone abandoned her here? What would happen to her if they would leave her here? Shaking his head he made up his mind, walked over to pick the baby up, and wrapped her up in his jacket. If anyone would be qualified to handle a baby with what seemed to be electrical powers, it would be him as he had access to all of his lab’s resources. The baby seemed content in his arms, babbling baby noises at him while looking up at him with those giant chocolate eyes. And maybe.. This girl would be good for him too, he thought as he smiled at her.
Ruben suddenly spoke from behind him, 'I think you should name her Neon. Because of like.. her hair and the electricity?’ Paul smiled at his lab partner, glad to see that Ruben seemed to also have taken a liking to the baby. ‘Neon is a good name. It suits her.’ He replied, smiling down at the girl in his arms.
After introducing everyone on their team to Neon and they’d all spent several minutes cooing over her, they headed back to the research center, already talking about where her room would be and what baby supplies they’d have to buy.
