Work Text:
Felix loved making birthday surprises, he loved seeing the surprise on the others faces, loved making them feel loved and special and loved knowing that he has made someone happy.
He, however, did not like surprises himself and his boyfriend knew it very well. Felix didn't really like being the center of attention and felt a bit awkward, he enjoyed spending his birthday with his boyfriend, in a small group of friends or just his family.
And Hyunjin respected that and even thought that it was cute. Every year he had managed to think of something small, but something Felix would love for his birthday.
First year it was a picnic date near sea, second year it was laser tag with their friends and last year it was a baking date.
This year was different from others though, it was more special. Hyunjin and Felix have been together for four years and each one of them has been filled with joy. Even at their second year they already had a conversation whenever they'd like to get married and what were their thoughts on marriage and both of them had agreed that they would like to get married someday.
They were like two polar opposites, so different yet fit like two puzzle pieces. Through these four years they have learned to understand each other so well they didn't need to use words to communicate. They were like true soulmates that just made sense so it wasn't hard for Hyunjin to come to a conclusion that he wanted to marry Felix, now he just needed to make the perfect plan to make sure Felix has no idea.
It was more stress inducing than he had expected. He was thinking of all Felix's favorite places, but none of them seemed quite right till he finally figured it out.
His childhood home. Felix loved his parents and was always trying to help them in any way he could, so the best way to propose to him would be at a dinner with his parents.
Hyunjin smiled to himself feeling proud of his idea.
Soon enough, he had called Felix's parents to ask for their opinion and permission to do so, which he received.
What Hyunjin failed to do, was being discrete around Felix as Hyunjin apparently was a horrible actor. Felix, however, seemed to have no clue whatsoever, he was so oblivious Hyunjin wondered if Felix already knew and was just acting as if he didn't, but if so then he is a great actor.
The only people who knew about Hyunjin’s plans were Felix's and his own parents, and also Jisung, Hyunjin’s best friend and the guy who introduced the two.
"Have you already bought the ring?" Jisung asked one time they were at the bar having a besties night out.
"Not yet, I don't want him accidentally finding it," Hyunjin said and took a sip of his drink.
"You can just give it to me!" Jisung said excitedly, ever since Hyunjin told him about proposing to Felix, Jisung had been very happy and excited, also a bit proud as he was the one who made this whole thing even happen. "What can I say, I'm a great matchmaker," he said very smugly when the two just got together.
Hyunjin cocked an eyebrow at him before saying: "Give it to you?"
"Hey! It's your engagement ring, I wouldn't loose it! Plus, Minho makes sure our apartment is always clean and everything is in it's place, so it wouldn't be able to get lost!" Jisung tried to defend himself.
Ah, right, Jisung's husband Minho, nevermind there are six people who know about Hyunjin wanting to propose to Felix.
The two got married last year and Hyunjin got to be Jisung's best men while Felix, Minho's.
Eventually Hyunjin agreed and the next week both of them were at the ring store.
"Ooh! This one is pretty!" Jisung said looking at the rings.
Hyunjin moved to where Jisung was standing and looked at the ring he was pointing at.
"Hmm, it's pretty, but no."
Like that went the next hour, after the fifteenth ring Jisung just decided to keep quiet and waited for Hyunjin to choose himself.
While waiting for Hyunjin to choose the ring, Jisung received a message from Minho that said: "you will not believe what just happend!!!" He refused to say what it was though and said for Jisung to come home quickly.
Once Hyunjin bought the ring he gave it to Jisung.
"If you lose it, you will also lose your best men position," Hyunjin threatened, but Jisung just smiled at him.
"Don't worry it will be safe with me!"
Once Jisung got home Minho greeted him with a smile.
"What is it?" Jisung asked his eyes big with a curiosity and Minho took out a little box from his pocket and oppened it. In it there was a ring.
"Why are you proposing to me again?" Jisung asked confused and Minho rolled his eyes.
"I'm not proposing idiot, Felix gave it to me," Minho said still with a smile.
"Felix proposed to you??" Jisung asked shocked and Minho gave him a funny look.
"Jesus no Jisung, Felix gave it to me for safe keeping!" Minho explained with a laugh.
It took a second for Jisung to put the puzzle pieces together and Minho could see the realisation spark in Jisung's eyes.
"Wait! Does that mean that both of them want to purpose?" Jisung practically yelled.
Minho nodded with his head.
"Did Hyunjin already choose a ring?" He asked. Jisung quickly pulled out a small box out of his pocket, opened it and Minho started laughing.
"What? Why are you laughing?"
"Look at the rings."
Jisung did as told and noticed that the both rings were identical.
"No way," he breathed out.
"They are two silly idiots," Minho said when he calmed down.
"Did Felix say when he wanted to purpose?"
"Oh yeah on his birthday, he said that the best gift he could get is a yes from Hyunjin," Minho smirked.
Jisung's jaw dropped.
"And Hyunjin thought that Felix already knew everything and just acted like he didn't, but apparently both of them were too focused on their secrets!" Minho nodded at that.
"C'mon let's put the rings in a safe place where we're sure they won't get lost," Minho said with a sweet smile.

"Jisung, where are you??" Hyunjin yelled at his phone. He was standing near his and Felix's apartment complex trash containers, he and Jisung agreed to meet there for Jisung to give him the ring, before going to Felix's parents.
"If I stay outside for too long Felix will grow suspicious!"
Jisung rolled his eyes at that, he knew that Felix was too preoccupied with his own engagement plan to notice for how long Hyunjin was throwing the trash out.
"I'm running already don't worry, in fact I can already see you," He said through the phone.
Hyunjin turned around and indeed saw Jisung hurriedly coming towards his way.
He ended the call and put phone in his pocket.
"Okay give it to me," Hyunjin said as soon as Jisung was in front of him, he was out of breath, hands on his knees trying to catch a breath.
"No hellos, no thank you for keeping it safe, and I thought we were best friends," Jisung stood up and was already digging through his pocket.
"You'll be my best friend when you give me the ring," Hyunjin said nervously looking at Jisung.
"Here it is," he said as he finally put out a small box.
"Thank you, oh my god," Hyunjin said relief washing over his body.
"You're welcome lover boy," Jisung smirked, seeing his best friend in this position was amusing.
"Alright got to go, bye!" Hyunjin said goodbye and already was sprinting towards his apartment without Jisung having the ability to say it back.
Hyunjin was nervous the whole way to Felix's parents house, but when he sat down his nervousness became even bigger which he did not think was possible. Felix also seemed to be in his thoughts during their drive, he didn't talk a lot.
During the dinner Hyunjin talked to Felix's mom about interior design and showed his latest work, Felix and his dad talked about Felix's new work place and everything seemed pretty normal. Except for the fact that Felix's parents kept throwing the two 'the looks' and Hyunjin hoped it wasn't obvious for Felix.
After the dinner Hyunjin could feel his palms sweating, his heart thumping and his legs were shaking, he was about to purpose when Felix called his name.
Hyunjin looked at him and Felix had a huge smile on his face but there was nervousness in his eyes.
When Felix knew that he had Hyunjin's attention he got on one knee and suddenly Hyunjin's brain stopped working.
"Hyunjin, you know how much I love you, there is not a day you don't get to hear that, I love you so much that sometimes I have to calm myself down. When I met you I thought that we're too different like fire and water, but now I know that that's what made us work together like puzzle pieces, and the best gift you could ever give to me is your 'yes', so, Hwang Hyunjin, will you marry me?" Felix said with the softest and sweetest voice ever, it was filled with so much love it made Hyunjin feel like a 3 year old who got access to too much sugar. Felix's eyes sparkled with hope while Hyunjin's were wide open in shock and tears. He quickly nodded his head saying yes at least 100 times as Felix put the finger on Hyunjin's finger.
Hyunjin looked at it and burst out in laughter.
"What? Why are you laughing? Is it ugly?" Felix asked worried.
"No, silly it's amazing I just," Hyunjin pulled out a box and opened it, showing Felix the exact same ring. Felix's jaw dropped.
"What? How?" He asked confused.
"I wanted to purpose to you too and this is the ring I chose," Hyunjin explained softly taking Felix's hand and putting the other ring on his finger.
"You did?"
"Yeah I have been planning this for months, I even asked your parents for permission, but in the end you beat me to it."
"Wait you knew we both wanted to purpose?" Felix asked looking at his parents.
"What were we supposed to do? Ruin the surprise?" His mom said with a smile.
"I mean, I guess," Felix said still not over the situation.
"But hey we have couple rings now!" He said excitedly taking Hyunjin's hand in his and Hyunjin smiled with half moon eyes.
"Yeah we do," he said and they looked into each others eyes professing their love through them and man was there a lots of it.
